I'm the moderator of the writers group in which the author work-shopped this book, and it was a pleasure to see the story unfold with all its twists and turns. The main character, Lorna, has to endure almost unbearable loss as her family is taken from her one member at a time, but she finds strength after overcoming her anger. Without giving away an important surprise, I'll say she finds love after she thinks it's no longer possible, and the ending is very satisfying. Well worth your time for a ...more

I went into this book knowing almost nothing about it. I thought Lorna and Laura would be two different people, for once, but it's actually the same woman, struggling with personal demons and anger toward God. Anyways, I was really enjoying this book and expected to give it 4 stars. It's kind of a suspenseful romance, taking place in Cleveland during WWII. About two thirds of the way through, there was a twist!! I don't want to give it away, but between that, and the overall theme of faith and ...more

I liked the creepy premise. It could have worked as a short story rather than a novel. A lot of description and dialogue didn't seem to advance the story. At the same time, some description was lacking; as another reviewer mentioned, the setting of 1940s Cleveland — which was the main draw for me in choosing this book — was vastly underutilized. It's as if the story could have happened at any time. One of the main events...(view spoiler) ...more

What a deep, touching, heart-wrenching at times but such a beautiful story! I’ll admit, I actually welled up on quite a few occasions, but that’s a good thing as it shows how much feeling the author has put into her story, and how deep and believable her characters are.
Laura is still trying to recover from the loss of her parents, who died in a tragic accident. When her young brother Chucky is conscripted in 1943 and is sent to the front, she is left absolutely alone, bitter and unsure of what

After her brother leaves to fight in World War 2, Lorna wants to leave behind everything that causes her heartache including possessions, memories, and of course the death of both of her parents. After moving into a new house, Lorna can't keep her eyes off her mysterious neighbor, Tristan Blake. At some moments he acts like he would rather be alone, but at other moments he is right there helping Lorna out. As the two spend more and more time together, they discover they both have suffered great ...more

I received this book from goodreads giveaways. This story has a good message about hope, Love, loss, forgiveness, etc. Lorna, our main character, has been struggling with loss and blaming God for her pain. She soon meets someone who begins to show her a new way of life until God tests her one more time. She realizes how much she needs to learn and grow from her pain rather than wallow and be angry. This story was a quick read and good hearted. However, it was set in the 1940s but you never ...more

When you lose your footing in life, you first must reinvent who you are, to become the better of you. That's exactly what Lorna has done. It was exciting to see such a closed up young lady open up, take chances, and find herself once again. With plot twists and surprises through out her new life, the book was one I couldn't put down.

Lorna verses Laura is a story about loss and love. I related to the story, as I think many people do. Like Laura, I changed the spelling of my name in my 20's, and changed it back a few years later. The author has a pulse on the deeper parts of humanity. She does a good job weaving in the reasons why we do things that we often don't even think about.

I loved this book. It took me a on roller coaster ride. I cried at times, but kept rooting for Lorna. Ms. Hilston's characters come off the page. You feel their heartache and revel in their joy. It truly is a romance story wrapped in suspense and you'll think, wow, I didn't see that coming. I highly recommend this book. This author has a gift!

(Full disclosure: I'm part of the writers group that the author goes to.) That being said, this is a wonderful book. Usually suspense romance books aren't my thing, but this story is so good that I couldn't stop reading it. The author weaves a powerful story of loss, forgiveness, and love. You really feel for the characters involved. I cannot recommend this book enough. Buy it today!

**I received a copy of this book from the Goodreads giveaways program.** This isn't a bad story, I just think it's not for me. I did not see either of the big twists coming (view spoiler) The second spoiler was just too much and it didn't really seem to fit in with the story, which was like an old person romance, and very tame. If this is supposed to be a ...more

This is a very depressing Book from cover to cover! The only light Heart is Friend Macy, who is so used by Lorna who tried to get away from a Friendship from Childhood. Many Deaths in this Book and handled terrible by dysfunctional People! I had read half the Book and still not into the main People! I believe Lorna is a very messed up Selfish Person. I give this Book 3
