2.5 stars. There were some cool tidbits and many boring things, and they really jumped around from topic to topic and through places and times. The infographic-type illustrations were interesting. Some of the titles were a little misleading in trying to be silly. A couple pages had unnecessary underlying agendas--like the page about U.S. presidents having a whole section of angry-looking women to point out that no women that have run have ever been elected. That's true, and I'm all for women, but that could have been stated better. My tween kids enjoy the book, and hopefully it will be a good springboard to dig further into some of the topics, but it wasn't my most favorite fact book.

Some if these were a bit dull but otherwise they were alright. I didn't love the illustrations but they were fine I guess.

I don't know where to begin with all that outstanding qualities about this book. It colorfully presents information in a fascinating manner with lots of graphics consisting of images, timelines, charts, maps, etc. It has has historical topics from basically everywhere and works to clarify misconceptions. As a history teacher I'm not sure when I last saw such an excellent visual resource for young and old historians alike. My coffee table will have a copy for people to browse! Beyond highly recommended!

This has some really fun visuals and a lot of little known history. It's not all western-centric either. I love all the weird facts and fun stories and the way they are all presented differently. My one complaint is that it's not organized chronologically or in any other manner I can discern so for a kid just learning history it's a bit of whiplash. But we spent an enjoyable half hour just reading random stuff out loud for the whole family.

Bought this as a birthday present for my husband (history major) and we loved reading it together! Many of the facts in this book were previously unknown to us, and I’m a sucker for cool new information. I’d highly recommend this book to readers of all ages, and I’m thinking that I need to get the entire collection, now…

A totally absorbing way to learn about history. Little snippets from events that have occurred around the world. I ended up doing more research online about some topics because I just had to know more!

Lots of tidbits about history presented in infomatics format. Readable and interesting, and not a bad jumping off point for other learning.

For example: I am fascinated with the idea of a modern era Dark Age and Ruby Bridges.

A period is called "dark" because there isn't much information available about it. An internet developer has posited that many things will be lost as we store data on increasing obsolete formats and hardware: cassette tapes, floppy discs, etc. It's a bit alarmist, because we have lots of print media still, but if we are saving all of our letters and images in some digital format, and aren't upgrading that format as new technologies emerge, there is a legitimate risk it will all someday be inaccessible!

Ruby Bridges was the little girl chosen to be the symbol of desegregated education in the south. On her first day of school, she had an armed escort to the building. There were no teachers or other students (which I find appalling) and so school was cancelled.

On her second day, there was just her and one teacher (originally from Boston). By the end of the year, she was attending a small class with white children. There were more black students with her her second year, and much more diverse racial mix by the time she was 11. So many questions: how was she chosen? How did she feel? Were there people who wanted to proceed as normal and didn't for fear of their neighbors and what others might think? How did it affect her in the long run?

Anyway, it was a great way to get bits of information to interest and intrigue, from all points around the globe. And it's part of a series :-D. This is going on my "grandma book shelf."

This Series has been a favorite of my children for quite some time. These books are similar to the Weird but true books. They are filled with facts about Music, the Earth, Science, and like this one History. The facts are simple: Dazzle Camouflage didn’t hide ships but made them harder to hit, and a pigeon won a medal but it cost her a leg. There is so much information on each page along with fun illustrations. These are great for homeschoolers, teachers, coffee tables, and those who like nonfiction reads. I cannot recommend this series enough.
