Five Gates. Five Sisters. Five Very Different Men.
Once there were two worlds connected by five magical gates. Then the Gate Keepers closed the gates and disappeared. The Gate Keepers have returned. Nadia de Quinones was exiled when her nephew, the crown-prince was abducted on her watch. She’ll let nothing stand in the way of her redemption, not even discovering her heartbonded and a connection to an ancient magical gate.
Lord Gregor Cyrene is sworn to protect his country's royal heirs. After the youngest prince’s life is threatened, Gregor sets out to discover who is responsible and suspects the answer lies with Nadia. When fate forces their competing goals to align, neither are prepared for the irresistible attraction between them.
Can they see beyond their pasts and a millennia old hate between their people? Or will they continue to distrust, allowing those plotting against them to win?

I received this book from Netgalley for my honest review.
At the beginning I had the feeling that I missed a previous book. Things were happening and I was like...
But, I soon grasped what was happening and who was who. Still during the whole book, I was forcing my imagination to fill the missing pieces. So, it could be said that this book was the opposite of those books where there's too much info-dumping. Here some more info would have been much appreciated!
The story as a whole is interesting and the world built too. The idea was good, but the execution not so much.
The heroine, Nadia, was portraited as a strong, intelligent and honorable woman, but she was obsessed with some strange notions like the one that she was guilty of her nephew's abduction, when she was assaulted and redered unconscious. Also, she alone was deciding what other people should do thust taking away their free will to decide for themselves. If all this is not enough, she didn't listen to her friends and stubbornly defended others who were indeed her enemies. Mah...
I also didn't understand the reason of her exile. Who exiled her, when her sister was the queen and kept in contact with her and tried to help her...
She made appearances as a princess, as a spy, as a tavern keeper, as a mystery guild master... And nobody ever suspected her. It seemed strange and unbelievable to me...
I would have like to know more about the religion, about the guardians, about the m’ami, about the different kind of of creatures... How all that come to be... What happened to divide the two worlds... Things like that would have made the story more understandable and more enjoyable.
As it is now, it's just a lot of people running around and a lot of things happening leaving us to find the reasons by our own. I must admit that I somwhat enjoyed it. It was an excellent exercise of my imagination!
I have one word for you. Mermaids. Yes, this book had mermaids! It's like a Disney fantasy come to life... you know, if Ariel was too busy with her very important mission while Eric tried his hardest to woo her while she fought their attraction at every turn...
Ok, it's nothing like Disney, but MERMAIDS! (Ok I'm done... promise...)
Nadia is Mer, an a'mi (creature of magic) and in exile after the infant prince was stolen from his bed on her watch. She is independent and full of snark and sass and is hell bent on completing her goal of finding her nephew and bringing him home. After spending twelve long years in exile, she is so close to her endgame.
Naturally this is easier said than done, and naturally there are obstacles. Especially when she begins to suspect that her long lost nephew may just well be the bastard son of Thuno's King.
Enter Gregor, best friend of crown prince Stefan and sworn protector of both royal heirs. They have an instant connection, one Gregor is not easily convinced to give up on.
Nadia is as sassy as she was frustrating. But that's what we want in a romance right? We can't have it be too easy can we? Or course not! Nadia has many close held secrets and will not allow herself to be with Gregor while he is so in the dark as to what those secrets are. Yet, in the same vein, she is not willing to share them. But don't worry even Nadia has her moments of weakness and gives in to some steamy love scenes. Gregor is kind of dreamy.
Gregor, unbeknownst to Nadia has long held a fascination with the a'mi and quickly falls head over heels for the woman who seems determined to deny herself any kind of true happiness. Gregor might just be the man for her, if only she let her guard down and let him in.
Secrets, lies, magic, love, lust and betrayal made for an excellent read. Recommended.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is an excellent, fast-paced story that held my attention from beginning to end. I especially like Nadia, the strong female protagonist. She's not afraid to stand up for herself. The interplay between Nadia and Gregor is fun and engaging, and I love Nadia's sassiness and her sharp retorts when interacting with Gregor. Prepare yourself - the love scenes are hot, hot, hot! I enjoyed both the fantasy and romance elements of this story and the way the author mingles them. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Most of the time, mythical creatures and love stories, combined with promising concepts and action, are totally my thing. I crave them, it's plain and simple.
But such was not the case with this book.
Nadia, a mermaid sort-of-princess (?), is looking for her lost nephew. She feels she's responsible for losing him in the first place, and when she finally finds a lead, she's determined to get him back. But Gregor, a man who has sworn to protect the royal heirs - one of whom also happens to be Nadia's nephew - is standing in her way. Together, they must overcome obstacles not only set by their different races, but also by those who wish to use the child for their own purposes...
I dare say, the concept was really nice. There's the idea of five gates, magical ones, that are connected to five sisters - my guess is Nadia and her sisters. The baby also has some connection to it all, but I'm not gonna give any spoilers on the matter. Add to that the fact that mermaids are quite a rare sight in adult fiction these days, and you got yourselves a winner.
However, the characters felt a bit... flat, in my opinion. They had a lot of interesting features that could have been explored, but didn't exactly make it for us to see. Nadia was too stubborn on some matters - namely, her being at fault for the abduction and then deciding for everyone else stuff - and that didn't do justice to a heroine that could have been so much more. And Gregor was too conveniently fascinated with her kind - though that was his main flaw for me, otherwise the man was pretty much perfect!
My other main concern was the world history. There were parts that I felt were missing, and some things were taken for granted for a world we were trying to get a grasp on - all the while following the story between the characters and the plot developments. At one point I just stopped trying to make sense of it, and it was like having them on a blank canvas - at least it was easier for me to focus on them that way...
I'm not sure whether I should love or hate this book - but I am sure I'll pick up the next in the series. Maybe it will clear things up a bit for me, who knows?
***I was given an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinion stated in this review is solely mine, and no compensation was given or taken to alter it.***
Fantasy novels are rarely as action-packed as this one which would be a plus if it were propelled by an easily comprehensible plot. But in this fast-paced read, there is a dearth of info to fill the gap as it starts rather suddenly, making it difficult at first to grasp the sequence of events. This at once gives the impression of a carry-over tale from a previous book, except it is actually the first in the GateKeeper Chronicles series.
The writing, however, is beautiful—with powerful sexual encounters, apt descriptions, and a kick-ass heroine—so beautiful, in fact, that it’s easy to overlook its shortcomings. But, for a story to be truly enjoyed, it must be understood, alas, the meager emphasis on storytelling makes it difficult to be.
What a swim! Diomere's Exile has a great mixture of romance and adventure. Nadia, who is hiding her mermaid roots, is looking for her long lost nephew and kicking human rear along the way. She is getting closer to succeeding in her mission when an encounter with a man named Gregor complicates everything. Will Nadia and Gregor overcome their pasts and invest in the future? Will their individual missions for two different royalties be successful, or will the success of one damage the other?
I absolutely love the world created in the pages of Diomere’e Exile and I cannot wait to read the next story in the series. The writer makes the sisters something special but creates the hero to more than match them in heroism. I recommend Sabrina A. Fish because for being the first book and series the writer has more than enough talent to successfully draw the reader into her world’s. I loved reading Diomere’s Exile. The main characters are fun and unique. They’re not the typical romance characters with nothing but love on their mind. They have to find a way to be together while struggling with their pasts and their current commitments. And the world is impeccable—it’s complex and unique and fun. I can’t wait to see more!

My Review This book wasn't awful or the best book ever but I still thought it was an okay book, and it took awhile for me to get into. I thought the plot and characters were okay, but the characters I didn't fall in love with and the plot I enjoyed better than the characters. If I were to pick a favorite character it would be Gregor, I just didn't feel any connection with the main girl character, which was Nadia. I did enjoy the book the most towards the end, and I would read other books by this author. So even though this wasn't the best book ever, I am still so glad I asked and was given a chance to read and review for this book tour!!!!

DIOMERE'S EXILE is the first book in the Gate Keeper Chronicles, and we start off in a whole new world. It appears to be split into two--those who live in one place and have magic, and those who live elsewhere and don't. Of course, this doesn't mean that everyone is in the right place!!
Nadia is our main female, and this woman takes no prisoners! She is strong, capable, and honest, although she does have one blind spot! Gregor is her perfect match, although Nadia has her doubts for her own reasons. The attraction between these two is off the charts, and I loved every moment.
This was extremely well-written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading. I loved the world, and found the world-building to be spot on. The characters are all multi-dimensional, and I can't wait to see more of them.
Five Gate Keepers. Five stories (I'm guessing). This one was WATER, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word. Can't wait for the next one. Absolutely recommended by me!
I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. This the first in the Gatekeeper Chronicles by author Sabrina A. Fish. This is the first full length novel by this author. Nadia de Quinones was exiled from Diomere when her nephew, the crown-prince, was abducted while under her care. Twelve years have passed since Nadia was exiled to Thuno’s. Nadia is determined to atone for her actions and find her nephew. Time is running out as mer people can only survive for so long cut off from m’ami (the source of their power.) Discovering the lost Gate of Thuno’s and discovering she is one of the missing gatekeepers adds to Nadia’s quest. She must now find her heartbond to open the gate. Lord Gregor Cyrene is charged with protecting the Royal family. Close friends with Prince Stefan since childhood, Gregor takes his role to protect Prince Stefan and his illegitimate brother seriously. When threats to Prince Reis (the illegitimate Prince) surface, Gregor is determined to protect him at any cost. Drawn to the mysterious Nadia, Gregor finds himself torn, whether to follow his heart or his loyalty. Gregor is certain there is more to Nadia that she lets on. He believes she is connected to the young prince and is determined to discover the truth. I struggled to follow the story initially and found myself losing interest. It suffers from a lack of word-building. For much of the first chapter I was lost, there is no backstory given. No description is given of previous events, Nadia’s current whereabouts are not detailed, no information is given on m’ami. I would not have struggled through if I had not agreed to review the book. This is the only downfall to the book. The author really hits her stride once the action gets going. The plot is fast paced and action pact. While the book does suffer from an excess of secondary characters, the main antagonist is cleverly concealed by the author until the very end. Gregor was a favourite of mine. He is intelligent courageous and while there were plenty of opportunities for him to act first, think later he gathers all information and is not quick to judge. The sex scenes in this book between the two protagonists is hot and steamy. A word of warning to sensitive readers, there are several scenes of sexual violence in this book and there is depiction of rape in the opening chapter. I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, stick with it and you will be rewarded with an action-packed adventure.
A wonderful tale of love interspersed with intrigue. Love Nadia and Gregor. The taste of magic with political intrigue was very interesting. I would have loved this even more if the sex scenes have been more fade to black. The story could have stood on its own without getting x-rated.
The Story- Nadia was exiled from Diomere 12 years ago when her nephew, the prince, was abducted under her watch. Her task is now to find and bring him back. When she finally finds him it turns out he has been raised the prince of another kingdom!
Time is running short for her to convince him of the truth, because her magical powers, her a'mi, fade the longer she is away from home. When she discovers a magical gate long buried, she discovers that she is a gate keeper, the protector of magical a'mi gates between worlds. The only problem, to open the gate she must find her heartbonded and profess her love. Time is almost up, will she make it?
My Thoughts-I really enjoyed this book. At first, I thought it was going to be your typical exiled girl falls for prince and they get married, but then everything changed. Nadia actually falls for the Prince's cousin and she has magic powers that control the elements and allow her to turn into a mermaid. Yeah, magic!
The romance between Nadia and Gregor is hot! There is a push/pull relationship where Nadia keeps forcing him away, but can't stop herself from dreaming about him. Gregor, for his part, keeps pursuing her. Warning- sex scenes.
Overall, this book was super enjoyable and introduced a new fantasy world that is loads of fun. I will be sure to look for the second book to see the story continue. 4 stars!
This was a 3.5 star book but I happily rounded up to four for the following reasons: a unique premise, a convincing hook and romance that ticks all the boxes for me. Romance that successfully melds with fantasy or science fiction is so rare that would be the topic of a completely different post but let me say that when it succeeds it does so brilliantly and I was so thrilled to find that this was the case here. My only slight quibble is that Nadia was a little irritating at the beginning because she was so obstinate. I find that writers try to make their heroines sassy but sometimes it just comes off as sarcastic and I don’t think that has to be the case. However, there can be no question that Nadia has earned her snark. Besides that she is whip smart, determined, skilled and yes, she has a huge heart. In Gregor’s character we find just the man to help her explore the passion - the same passion and personality that also fuels her determination to right a wrong and to do things on her own terms. On the one hand I think it smoother since of backstory is in order but at the same time this book is so different and so promising that I feel confident that you will not miss the missable once you dive into this book. Highly recommend!
Loved this book that I received as a free copy. Nadia is such an amazing strong female. The crown prince, her nephew is kidnaped on her watch. Therefore she’s exiled. The entire story keeps you reading to find out what happens. Definitely ready for the next one.
I enjoyed reading this book for the most part. The premise was interesting and I was hooked from the first chapter. First chapters of book, in fact the first page always packs a punch for me and this was started well. Nadia is a kick ass heroine, a strong woman that many will either love or hate. She can come off sometimes as unlikable though in some parts through her attitude. For majority though, she is the strong woman that you root for. This fantasy combined with romance integrated both well. I'm a lover of romance books and this had the elements of a good romance between Nadia and Gregor. And passionate was the relationship between the two. Just some parts of the storyline that I would have wanted to know more about which wasn't explained. You won't be disappointed reading this book though. it's very much worth the read. I'd read other books in the series.
A fast-paced and well-written novel with a kick-ass heroine. It starts a bit suddenly and it's hard to know exactly what is going on, but the scene-setting description really pulled me in. You can feel the weather, hear the noises, smell the cooking of this magical world... it's all very vividly brought to life. Lots of epic sex scenes - the one at the end is really amazing. My criticism would be that it does get confusing at times - there are too many characters and the elements of the world are talked about without being explained until much later. A list of characters at the beginning and who they are would be useful - they have so many exotic names its easy to get lost. But lovely vivid writing is what really makes this book stand out for me.
Wow! This story was wonderfully written! The descriptive writing made it easy to imagine this magical world. The story was captivating and kept me interested in what happens next. What a cool idea for fantasy, romance, action and adventure all out together in one novel. Not your typical mer story! This is a must read for any fantasy romance fanatic!!!
This is the first book I've read from Sabrina Fish and I can't wait to read more. An engaging book full of action, intrigue, magic, mystery, and love. Love this series, and can't wait to read more from Fish.
The beauty of this cover is reflected by the contents of the book. Nadia is a strong leading character who is determined to find her missing nephew. For twelve long years she has searched, and the closer she comes to finding him the more perilous her journey is. Upon meeting Lord Gregor Cyrene, things become more intense, due to the attraction they have for one another, an attraction she finds distracting and yet can't resist. But more is at stake when she believes she has found her nephew and danger raises its head. Enemies come out from all sides and knowing who to trust becomes unclear. It's her protective instincts and her secrets that cause strife between herself and Gregor, for how can she accept his offer of help when she hides so much from him? This book is wonderful, the world building, the characters and the mystery. You keep rooting for Nadia and Gregor and hoping that everything will work out all right. This is the first book in the series and I would advise having the next book ready so you can delve into it.
Exiled after the abduction of her nephew, our sassy heroine sets out on a mission to find him then runs into our hot hero along the way. Twists and turns, danger, mermaids, and passion hold the reader's attention! Nadia's powers are fading the longer she's away from home. She's a gatekeeper, and she falls in love although she fights it. Witty humor interspersed with hot sex and constant action make this a hard to put down book. Give Diomere's Exile a try if you're looking for an imaginative, fantasy read!
What a superbly fantastic book! The author has built a fascinating world with strong and well-developed characters. The premise of the 5 sisters and the 5 gates is unique and intriguing. And, wow, the romance/passion between Nadia and Gregor is off the charts. I could really feel their conflict and attraction, which was blended perfectly. I was hooked from beginning to end. Can’t wait to read more in this wonderful series.
This book was totally different from what I thought it was going to be. Really enjoyable storyline with good strong characters. No helpless maidens here! Written well and a fantastic performance. #audiobookobsessionreviewer
Very different from what I was expecting but an amazing read/listen nonetheless. The performance by Barbara Nevin’s Taylor was exceptionally done and I can’t wait for the next book in line.
The author did a wonderful job on this book. I was pulled into this story from the very beginning. The storyline is interesting and characters well written. I recommend reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Love, magic, and mermaids? I'd say this is a 'no-brainer' but that's definitely not what I mean, as the story is intriguing and engaging. However, CHOOSING to read it IS the no-brainer!
