I spent the weekend reading and obsessing over Brakefield's FIELD RECORDINGS. I already know this is a book I'm going to recommend to everyone, bring with me on hikes, on trips to cabins, revisit year after year to find new gorgeous nooks to hide in, new ways to fall in love.

I can't say this seriously enough: this is a brilliant folkloric grimoire, a stunning love letter to Michigan, to natural beauty and music and how we move through it all.

A must read collection.

A precise, harmonious landscape of folk music and rural scenes and the unrelenting desire to collect the beautiful thing, whether on records or in poems. This isn't the Midwest I grew up knowing but it's one I feel lucky to know now.

Wonderful first book of poems, at least partly following Alan Lomax around Michigan finding the music in the place. Here's a short column I did on it
