I see from the high ratings this book has received that a lot of people like it. I can't really fault them for that since it is a rather cute premise and reading it wasn't torture. I've had a little while to think things through, however, and....well, I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think I just might be a bit more critical than the average reader.

As stated previously, the premise is good. Sadly, premise (and the author's intent) do not always translate to a good read. Reasons I Fell fo I see from the high ratings this book has received that a lot of people like it. I can't really fault them for that since it is a rather cute premise and reading it wasn't torture. I've had a little while to think things through, however, and....well, I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think I just might be a bit more critical than the average reader.

As stated previously, the premise is good. Sadly, premise (and the author's intent) do not always translate to a good read. Reasons I Fell for the Funny Fat Friend reads like a story from someone who really wants to tell a story but has absolutely no idea how to do so compellingly. There is no immersion whatsoever, the reader is just slid along the surface, never once getting a peek at anything deeper. Yes, teenagers can be shallow, but this story hints at the fact that they can be more without once showing us more. I found Brody's voice to be simplistic, redundant, immature, and slightly annoying (do people from Oklahoma really drop that many G's?!), and while I was informed that Hayley was supposedly hi-larious, I wasn't doing a whole lot of laughing. Much of the humor felt forced and awkward.

When I say the reader is never shown any depth, I mean Becca Ann hints at depth without really delving. Brody has issues with his douchebag of an older brother and his "bio-dad", but these issues are never fully addressed. We get a confrontation scene between Brody and Gabe (the brother), but then the entire issue is dropped. Hayley has some serious self-image issues and her mother is ridiculously emotionally abusive, but these issues are also never fully explored. It seems as if the character of Hayley's mother exists merely to provide an abusive backdrop and excuse for Hayley's insecurities. For some reason, Hayley "winces" or "flinches" any time someone uses a swear (rolling my eyes so hard it hurts), and Brody figures this out and cleans up his language, but do we ever find out why Hayley has a physical reaction to foul language? Nnnnnope!

Brody kept calling himself a douche, Hayley kept calling herself fat, there was a bunch of contrived drama and stilted humor, and then I ran across "dually noted" and wanted to punch something. Yeah, it might be petty, but I guess I'm just confused about why there are so many inept writers out there. I mean, most people who love to read and/or write are lovers of words. When it is quite obvious you are not a word lover, your passion for using them to craft a story makes no sense to me.

That being said, the book isn't awful. It's just not nearly as funny or as poignant as the descriptions and reviews make it out to be. ...more

One word to describe this book...

Thats what Hayley would say anyway! This was a short (only took a little over 2 hours to read) but super cute and funny book! Just what I needed after the emotionally taxing reading week I've had!

One of the best things about this book was it was from the guys perspective (which I love). Brody- I loved me some Brody!

Here is a book I knew I wanted to read the second I read the title. I found it b accident, and I'm so glad I did. As someone who feels like "the funny fat friend", this book was perfect for me. Now, do not mistake; Brody, the main characters, does not find Hayley “fat”. That’s Hayley’s idea of herself.
I came out of the read feeling hopeful and happy for myself, which I think is a wonderful thing.

CUTE. SUPER CUTE. CUTE

I could not put this book down. I cant decide what i Loved most - The adorable chapter titles, the male POV or the quite frankly amazing witty writing. I.LOVED. THIS. BOOK.

Refreshing, laugh out loud funny, cute as can be, tummy going crazy first smooch, nothing beats a well written teeny bopper book.

Easy 4 stars from me and a welcome break from the over sexed mini drama's I've been reading of late.

I LOVED that the book was all from Brody's POV. The inner dialogue of a teenage guy certainly was entertaining.

There was an article that I read back in September that brought up the fact that despite the near-inclusiveness of YA books, fat people were still not as highlighted nor embraced as mainstream characters, and that fat-shaming was one of the few remaining acceptable targets. While I’m all for being healthy (I know that I ought to be better with my diet), I hate fat-shaming. I detest the yearly onslaught of “New Year’s Resolution- Lose X Pounds!”; I hate the criticism of a perfectly healthy person There was an article that I read back in September that brought up the fact that despite the near-inclusiveness of YA books, fat people were still not as highlighted nor embraced as mainstream characters, and that fat-shaming was one of the few remaining acceptable targets. While I’m all for being healthy (I know that I ought to be better with my diet), I hate fat-shaming. I detest the yearly onslaught of “New Year’s Resolution- Lose X Pounds!”; I hate the criticism of a perfectly healthy person being chubby; and I loathe the BMI with a fiery burning passion. (Fun fact! The person who thought up the BMI did so to prove possible criminal activity. Yeah.)

For teenage girls, it’s worse. Not only do we have to deal with the relentless onslaught that is high school—which does wonders for confidence, let me tell you—but we have no one to look up to. When I was in school, I didn’t have any chubby role models, much less anyone who could be considered “fat” but still seen as a sex object. For a while, there was Jordin Sparks, but even she lost weight. The fat girl cannot be a sexualized object, and should she even dare think of sex, she must be ridiculed for it.

We need more books like this one.

There is no magical weight-loss makeover here. No impossible standards by which the heroine is considered fat. No chubby-chasing, despite what Brody’s brother thinks. And Hayley isn’t ridiculed for attempting to be sexy.

Why didn’t I have a book like this when I was sixteen?

Hayley is one of the more realistic heroines I’ve come across in a long time. She’s insecure about her weight and how boys see her, but she has a wicked sense of humor that she utilizes. (I loved when she rates her body, noting “Well, the good thing is I have a rack.”) Yes, in most other books, whenever Hayley turns down Brody, it could have been “You idiot, can’t you see he loves you!” But it’s not here, because we see why Hayley’s so insecure about boys liking her and what they really want her for. The fact that Brody has fallen for Hayley is unbelievable for her because she’s been told (directly and indirectly) that she’ll never be good enough for any passable guy. Even when Brody does act like an idiot and doesn’t tell anyone about their relationship, it felt more true here when Hayley gets upset because she does have a reason for having that reaction. If anything, I would have liked to gotten more with her mother, maybe to flesh out Hayley’s insecurities more. But I do really like her. I also like that while she’s fat, Hayley’s friendly with everyone and isn’t treated like a member of the lower caste. And even though it’s not dwelt on, her body is brought up in text, not only through Brody’s sex filter, but also in minor scenes, like when she gets her tattoo. I also love that she’s able to fall naturally into conversations with Brody; it gives the two a lot of chemistry and really sets up their relationship.

The other thing I absolutely love about this book is Brody. On a writing standpoint, it is really hard to write the opposite sex and pull it off well. Brody’s voice was extremely strong and he did feel like a genuine teenage boy, with the constant acknowledgements of “Oh, God, I’m checking her out, aren’t I?” Yet despite being a horny teenage boy, Brody earns my undying love in that he is respectful toward women. Not “big man help puny women-folk”-masked-as-chivalry. He actually respects Quynn and Hayley as people. When he said that he has no claim on Quynn and their relationship prior to the book gives him no claim, I actually wanted to cheer. (Or, as my brain thought, “Did he just obliterate the nice guy argument?”) Brody’s not perfect, and he does screw-up frequently, but the fact that he was conscious of the screw-ups and tried to make things better made me love him even more.

And Brody and Hayley’s relationship in all. I have to admit, when I first started reading this, I thought that this was going to be mostly about Brody desperately trying to win over Quynn before realizing in the last third that he’s in love with Hayley. (I think this says more about my expectations in YA.) Nope. The romance is between Brody and Hayley. There’s some waffling early on, but once Brody realizes his real feelings, it’s all about Hayley. Even their first time together is handled admirably, with Hayley seducing Brody and the two gleefully leaping into bed.

If there’s anything I really wanted more of, I wanted to get a better idea of what Brody’s other relationships were like. I liked that he wanted to be on friendly terms with Quynn (again, no nice guy bs!); and I really liked Brody’s relationship with his parents. (Tangent, I had to do a fist-pump when Brody clarifies that his step-dad is his real dad, and that his biological dad did nothing for him. Yes.) But I wanted to get more of Brody’s friends, especially since Brody keeping his relationship with Hayley quiet is a big part of the climax. That whole plot point could have worked a lot better if we had gotten more with Tanner and Brody.

The plot is standard YA fluff, but what Becca Ann did with these characters makes it more interesting than any other YA romcom that I’ve come across. Brody alone gets all of my points, but making Hayley into a real character who can be seen as a role model earns major respect in my book. There’s a positive and endearing message not just for girls, but for boys as well. This is a definite recommend.

This is a phenomenally honest and funny and romantic and, yes, sexy read. Did I mention the funny? It is hilarious. It contains one of the best descriptions of a first kiss I've ever read (and you guys know how many kisses I read weekly. I have to be some kind of expert on reading kisses by now, right?)

I have a stupid grin on my face right now, because I so needed to read something like this today. It was really really cute and sweet, and just the perfect amount of mush mush, but it's mush mush that doesn't make you gag.

First I have to say that I loved the way this was written. It was funny, and real and not once was I bored. Seriously, the story flows so naturally, it was a joy to read. The characters are realistic, and there's crazy chemistry between Brody and Hayley.

If I weren't so stingy with 5 stars, this book would get them all. It was a quick enjoyable read. In fact, at some point I just didn't stop reading until done. Though it was a love story set in high school, the characters were mature enough to be enjoyable to me.

This really was the sweetest thing.
This is the story of Brody and Hayley.

It was actually a breath of fresh air to read a easy, sweet, clean YA. Don’t get me wrong there are issues that are covered in here but not in details. I’ll tell you more about that later.

Freakin' Amazeballs! What a fun read… from start to finish!

First off, boy do I LOVE that it’s from the guy’s POV…the whole book!! As much as I love Hayley’s character I was a smitten kitten with Brody and I was over the moon it was from his POV. It also helped that the guy is funny and has a bunch of random and super adorable –and embarrassing - thoughts we’re privy to. Before I go on and on about Brody, let’s not forget that this book has an awesome heroine. She’s smart, fun, has a great pers Freakin' Amazeballs! What a fun read… from start to finish!

First off, boy do I LOVE that it’s from the guy’s POV…the whole book!! As much as I love Hayley’s character I was a smitten kitten with Brody and I was over the moon it was from his POV. It also helped that the guy is funny and has a bunch of random and super adorable –and embarrassing - thoughts we’re privy to. Before I go on and on about Brody, let’s not forget that this book has an awesome heroine. She’s smart, fun, has a great personality, cute, vivacious, and yes she’s curvy and maybe possibly fat – depending on your standards. So yea, she has self-esteem issues brought on by a terrible mother and also by being steam-rolled by guy friends who just wanted to use her as a matchmaker with her skinny friends. So she has kind of shielded her heart and it’s all totally understandable. Though we do get to the point where we want her to open up when something good and true comes along – in the form of a high school, all around good guy stud – Brody Grant.

To be fair, Brody isn’t perfect.. and I like that he isn’t. He does (for a while) go back and forth between Hayley (the girl he sees as beautiful inside and out) and Quynn (the girl who everyone sees as beautiful and who he’s been crushing on for years) – but what 18 year old wouldn’t want a Quynn for a girlfriend? – especially since Quynn is actually a nice person as well as being pretty.

A couple things I was surprised by. (view spoiler) Well, no matter, maybe these are part of the reason why I liked the book so much..less angst that way.

This is one of those books you read and go, THANK YOU, for finally writing something like this. Brody is sweet and sensitive but still such a boy. Which is why I love him so much. And Hayley had me dying laughing through the whole book. This is one of those fun reads that will have you falling in love with these characters. And so happy that real romance still exists.

I really liked the story in this book. The characters are likeable, and I can relate to Hayley. Although, I'm more like the 'shy fat friend' rather than the funny one. I like the way the chapter headings are listed as the reasons that are alluded to in the title of the book, and how those reasons tie into the end of the story I really liked the story in this book. The characters are likeable, and I can relate to Hayley. Although, I'm more like the 'shy fat friend' rather than the funny one. The author does a great job of showing how girls who aren't a size two really feel, why they feel that way, and how hard it is to convince them that they are more than that.

I like the way the chapter headings are listed as the reasons that are alluded to in the title of the book, and how those reasons tie into the end of the story. I thought that was pretty clever.

However, I don't particularly care for how the book was written. There are very few descriptive references in this book. Nothing to assist you in visualizing the story. We know very little about what the characters actually look like. We know that Hayley 'isn't skinny, but isn't fat' and that she has green eyes, that Brody has a six-pack, and that Quynn is slim and beautiful. That's pretty much all the description we get. You have to get halfway through the story before you even find out how old they are. I mean, you know they're in high school, but there's quite a difference between a freshman and a senior in high school. There is absolutely no reference anywhere that describes their environment, assisting you in creating a picture in your mind. It is all left up to the reader with very little assistance from the author.

The flow of the book, to me, seems very choppy. I think the longest paragraph in the whole book has maybe three sentences in it. I'm sure this is largely due to the lack of description I mentioned above. The book reads, basically, as one long conversation. Whether it's conversation between Brody and Hayley, or Brody's thoughts to himself, that's pretty much all it is.

And I agree with a previous review that the book seems only to graze the surface of some very deep issues and ideas that could have been further explored. While I understand that the point was to keep the story light and fun, I had hoped for a little more depth.

This book contains a lot of swearing, starting out pretty heavily and tapering off as you near the end. It also uses a lot of sexually provoked language and includes a fairly descriptive make-out scene. I realize that these things aren't an issue for many people, but I think they should be pointed out to anyone considering reading it, so they know what they're in for if they do. This book is written for a young adult audience and takes place in high school, but it's not something I would be comfortable with my high school age children reading.

Then you read it and you groan...knowing suddenly why.

Every now and then, though, you get one like Reasons. You can't put it down, you hate the 'falling asleep' feeling and fight to stay awake so you can keep reading, first thing you do on Sunday morning after checking email is coffee, I think it's happened to all of us. That's what happened for me with this book. I've spent, literally, all morning reading because I needed to get to the next reason.

For the purists out there, let me add a small codicil. This is not A Deep Meaningful Read. This isn't a Groundbreaking Emotional Study. This is a boy's story of how he fell in love. It's his story, it's told entirely in his voice, and with all the good and stupid boy thoughts mixed in.

Yes, I'm still laughing at him calling his room the "ass room" because it smells like ass. Mostly because this is what my 19 year old and I both call his. And it does. I should own stock in Febreeze by this point.

Back to the story. This beautiful, touching, funny story. I loved the way it was laid out. Because of the title, you expect the chapter titles - but when you finally find out the reason, they mean so much more. Especially when they finally come out in the story itself. One of my favorite scenes.

I loved that the characters weren't perfect - they made mistakes, made me want to reach into the pages and shake some sense in to them. I also loved that not everything was explained out (like Hayley's aversion to swearing) because that wasn't what was important to Brody. The why didn't matter, just that she had that aversion and he tried to stop. It's one of those things you suspect will be discussed later, or off screen if you prefer, but not a vital-to-the-story thing.

All in all, I got just what I wanted from this book - a pleasant surprise, a lovely story (and if we're honest, a written out fantasy for all the not-cute-and-skinny high school girls like me who were always playing wingman to their guy friends because they knew there wasn't any way the hot guy would ever be into them and covered that up with laughter.) ...more

I enjoyed it so much and I’m pretty surprised because I did not expect it.

It’s a lovely story and I love Brody and Hayley, and they are a perfect couple.

Brody is a very special boy. He’s funny, shy (and that’s freaking cute) and such a boy with all this hormones! He’s hot and doesn’t care about it (how cute!)… He’s just lovely and cute (clearly :D). I really like him because he’s a very normal teenager and not a player like all the other boys in YA books.

Just finished the book... and it was just so damn SWEET!! :-)

There were parts of it where I was just thinking to myself:

I love the ending... It just made me go all, "Awwwww...".

And I determined that for them:

Should you read this book? Yes! Would an older age group enjoy it? I think so... it reminded me of when I was in middle school/high school. I think it applies to any time period! VERY good book! :-)

When I was a girl, reading gave me more than just pleasure. It helped me feel not so alone, gave me a sense of the world as a bigger place than my small southern town.

I grew up to write young adult fiction, so I could pass on that gift. Kids have it hard - they deal with a lot - and it's nice to think writing can help them feel like they are part of something greater, like they are more than what their peers or their parents say they are.

I mean, come on....Look at the title of this book. It's perfect. And the book is so darn cute. Darn because Brody can't swear next to Hayley, she doesn't like that ;)
I mean I instantly related to the title, because...well... I was the funny fat friend. Ok. Maybe not funny, but from my group of friends I was the fat one, or the "less beautiful" ( ugly is a harsh word).
