Exciting rescue stories on the high seas! The Coast Guard’s rescue personnel are second to none, and Coast Guard air and sea rescue missions have been the subjects of celebrated newspaper accounts, books, and movies, including The Perfect Storm. The Coast Guard is one of the nation's five military services, which exist to defend and preserve the United States. In The Greatest Coast Guard Rescue Stories Ever Told, the editor has pulled together some of the finest writings about air and sea rescues that capture readers imaginations, culled from books, magazines, and elsewhere. It is an unforgettable collection, and includes stories by Kathryn Miles, Eric Hartlep, Gerald Hoover, Martha Laguardia-Kotite, Geoffrey D. Reynolds, Kalee Thompson, H. Paul Jeffers, and many others.
Tom McCarthy grew up on the Great Lakes. His love of sailing and the ocean is a driving force behind this collection of stories. He lives in Chester, Connecticut with his wife and two daughters.
Didn’t even finish this book. Just could not get into it despite picking it up for months, and despite normally loving books exactly like this one. Found way too much mentioning of rank and title and vessel/aircraft number etc etc.,it’s of details that weren’t necessary for telling the story and just was off putting on the page in my opinion.
I would rate it as just okay. Some people commented that it has too much information on the people involved but I found it okay, I would however liked to know when the events happened--dates were supplied in some stories, others I couldn't find a date. I would have liked to know who the people were that actually wrote (apparently) each story.
This book is a collection of stories, through history of some of the activity of the Coast Guard . The stories are pulled from storms and war time. All were interesting. The book, was falling apart a bit as pages were coming undone. Too bad.
Great stories about rescues from the 1800's until just recently. Should have been some contemporary stories on boats rescues, but overall a lot of good stories
