I read this book back in 2014 and again this summer. I was looking for help homeschooling highschoolers. In 2014 E was my concern and now in 2020 D is. They are so different. However, this book wasn't helpful to me for either of them.
She does have some good thoughts, quotes, ideas, and resources.
My problem is I found myself comparing my kids to hers and feeling deflated, like I've failed.
I've had this in my arsenal for over 5 years, but I can finally say I pulled it off my shelves and read it - and LOVED it! So much wonderful information, such a fascinating story, definitely a great read.
This was a good reminder for me. Looking forward to going back and reading my highlights. I was reading 3 books at once and feel I didn't give my full attention to this...krb 4/7/18
Zan Tyler shows us how beneficial her years schooling her three children were in being an influential part of the legislative process on homeschooling in South Carolina. Her children were all introduced to politics in a fun and informative way. She uses much biblical wisdom to stress that this is the priority to help kids remain "marked by faith, prayer, courage, discernment, consistency, and lack of compromise." It is wonderful to hear such fine testimony for parents who are interested in keeping their children in a deep faith life while engaging in life skills rather than just a classroom situation in the learning process. She has some beautiful quotes, like this on from John Taylor Gatto: "No effect of compulsory mass-schooling is more resistant to remedy than the damage it has done to the American family by separating parents and kids." I highly recommend this book if you are a parent or will be one anytime soon.
Such an encouraging book. By focusing on my children's potential and unique gifts while also getting them to focus on it, I have seen 2 children blossom virtually overnight!
