Quirky, just like the author. Indy loved all of the lolly pops, cup cakes, and life sized fairy floss. When I grow up I want to do a whole lot of nothing, too. My fave - reach out to the branches. Indy was a bit confused. As I said it certainly was quirky. Abstract, in a way. Indy is only 5, after all!

A cleverly illustrated version of the lyrics from Minchin’s musical adaptation of Matilda. Great meaning in the lyrics and plus there’s a song to accompany it. Wonderful!

Recommends it for: Steve Antony Fans / Readers Looking for Children's Stories About Being a Grown-Up
The text of this sweet picture-book is inspired by Tim Minchin's song, When I Grow Up, composed as part of his Matilda: The Musical, and is paired with lovely artwork from illustrator Steve Antony. Children envision all the things they will be able to do and experience, once they are grown up, those very things that will provide them with the knowledge and qualities that define what it is to be a grown-up in the first place, at least in a child's eyes...

Every child has made the statement, "When I grow up, I am going to…"

I can remember all the time when I would say things like, when I grow up I am going to eat all the chocolate I want before bedtime.

When I grow up, I am going to sleep in as late as I want.

When I grow up, I am never going to force my kids to go to an antique store after antique store.

When I grow up, I will buy as many books that I want.

Every child has their expectation

'When I Grow Up' by Tim Minchin, and illustrated by Steve Antony, is a fanciful story about the excitement of considering what to be as a grown-up. It not only considers more academically-oriented ideas such as being smart enough to answer all types of questions, but also the more innocent and endearing thoughts of kids who say and think the darndest things, such as being able to eat sweets all of the time, while going to bed as late as one would like. The perspective is endearing, in that it tr ...more

This children's story is about things that the character wants to do when they grow up. It allows for young readers to imagine all the things they will be able to do once they grow up. When I Grow Up is a look into an adult life but through children's eyes. Typically, children dream of being able to climb all the trees they want, eat all kinds of sweets, and do everything and anything they want to. Although this isn't always what adults do, this is what they think they will want to and be able t ...more

I adore this book a lot because of the interpretations young children have on older adults is too funny. This book is about all the "fun" things adults get to do when they're older. For example, eating sweets on the way to work or not being able to burn in the sun because you're all grown up. It is an easy read and isn't too long or too short. I think it is the right length to read to young children considering it can be challenging for them to sit through a long book. The illustrations in the b ...more

Superb illustrations choking with detail and glorious colour. Engaging lyrical verse -which I would have SO liked to hear musically but alas the soundcard and instructions provided to allow for this in the Aussie hardback version prevented me from doing so, (although I seen the musical). I adored Minchin's cheek and parody on the page, nonetheless. A sweet and clever narrative version of Minchin magic.

{My thoughts} – This is a cute little story about a little child’s wishful thinking of how things will be when they grow up. The illustrations are nicely done and flow well with the words on each page.

I recommend this book for any child’s home library, because it shows them that it’s okay to imagine a future.

This sweet book with just a few lines per page is a gently, lightly humorous read perfect for Preschool- first grade. A child makes plans for what they will do when they grow up including learning ALL the answers and watching tv until their eyes turn square. The phrase "when I grow up" is repeated throughout.

Nothing is more special, more wonderful, more heartwarming than to experience a child dreaming of the future. So many possibilities, so many options. How wonderful it is and was to dream of being grown up.

Recommends it for: Grades K-1
Interesting book that explores the idea of young children growing up. There are so many things they want to do on their own. This book is worthy of a good read to a class. The illustrations are a combination of color with sections of black and white. Recommended for Grades K-1.

With adorable illustrations, kids show exactly what they would do when they grow up. Grown-ups stay up late, watch tv forever, have treats whenever they want. The kids are adorable through engaging illustrations.

Lovely book, fantastic illustrations. It's also nice to see normalised diversity in this picture book, with kids with a variety of races and abilities depicted as participating in the shenanigans.

Matilda is one of my all-time favorite shows, and this is my favorite song from the show. The fact that I can now share it with my kiddos makes me a HAPPY MUSIC TEACHER.
