USA Today Bestselling author by day and superhero by night... Seriously, though. I write Contemporary Romance that will tear my readers apart and put them back together again. As long I have coffee, I legit think I can conquer the world.
Kismet (Birch County Blue book 1) By April Canavan is a 5 star read. This book starts out with emergency dispatcher Maya confessing her feelings for deputy sheriff Brian and getting rejected, tucking her feelings away she goes home to find her house has been broken into and her things moved, it looks like she may have a stalker, when she calls 911 her work colleagues send her help, but when she doesn’t take it too seriously her stalker ups his game and attacks her and leaves Maya for dead. With her friends in the sheriff’s department working to find her attacker Maya tries to get on with her new way of life. Sheriff’s deputy Brian is a father of 2 boys and in a relationship going nowhere, he has feelings for Maya but feels that he’s not the right person for her, after her attack things change for him and he decides to go for what he wants and that’s Maya. Maya’s stalker doesn’t like the new turn in her life, can Brian and Maya figure out what they want while trying to stop a mad man?? This book was amazing, as soon as I picked it up I was hooked, this is a new author to me and I’m really glad I found my way to her stories, I can’t wait to read more. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this book.
Wow..I wanted to protect Maya too. She has gone through too much pain and not just the physical kind. Great book but has a dark theme. Keeps you turning the page until you find the SOB and to see if there is a happy ending. This story will have you wanting a close "family" like in this book. It even shows that you don't have to be blood to be family. Every person will do what they can for one another. I love all the characters in the book (except the bad guys of course) and look forward to the next book. Jake needs a happy ending. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I feel like all I've been reading lately is romance novels and mystery/thriller/romantic suspense novels. And you know what? I'm completely okay with that since I get both sides of the spectrum: the sugary and sweet as well as the disturbing and suspenseful.
So when April Canavan's Kismet, the first romantic suspense book in her Birch County Blue, landed on my radar I knew I had to read it. It seemed like the perfect book to continue my reading trends. Plus, isn't that cover just delightfully creepy?! It made me wonder just how the word Kismet would be involved in the novel.
The result? While slow to start, Kismet turned out to be an overall addictive and enthralling read once the story got going and the suspense as well as the romance started building.
Maya was so incredibly ordinary. However, I think the ordinariness here is what made her character stand out to me, especially when bringing her attack into the picture, because Maya? She could be any of us - she's just a girl trying her best to find her place in life who unknowingly attracts the eye of the wrong kind of a person. It's what made this book so frighteningly realistic.
What Maya went though broke my heart. I was right there with her and her friends, wondering and screaming why this could've happen, and wishing I could give her a hug. However, I admire the strength she had moving on from that night. She doesn't let it get in the way of living her life; instead, she goes back to work and tries to return back to normal, trying to put what happened on the back burner.
While I did like Maya, there is one thing that annoyed me about her....her unwillingness to forgive Brian for what happened at the start of the book. I get it...it sucks when someone who you love doesn't admit the feelings back to you...but to push that person completely aside? Blew my mind. In some ways, I got it - he was an easy person to deflect her angry at the world at - but at the same time Brian was trying his best to repent for his actions as well as show Maya that while her accident was horrific it made him want to repent his mistakes and get the girl. And I did like Brain. Yeah, he acted like a lovestruck, confused teenager at times, but at the same time, I think he was just someone who hadn't grown up yet, who was afraid of making another bad relationship decision.
The mystery in this book was compelling, full of enough twists and turns to easily allow me to finish Kismet in one sitting. One of the reasons it was so unputdownable was the changing POVs. April gives us not only Brian and Maya's viewpoints but also the viewpoint of the attacker. The attacker's viewpoint was disturbing, creepy, and frightening, but it also had me on the edge of my seat, dying to know what he would do next as well as angry that the police just kept missing him. The attacker's identity was one I didn't see coming, but the revelation at the end around it rocked my world. Crazy, crazy, crazy, that's all I'll say. In addition to the mystery, I loved the romance component as well. Brain and Maya were the classic will-they-or-won't, and the more they fought it, the more I was scramming internally, just admit you're in love already, you two!! I especially loved how their friends and family's conspired to get them together and admit their feelings. Brian's little boys always managed to steal the show in that regard.
I had two problems with Kismet, however. One was the story was slow to start. It took at least five chapters to really get the story going, and while that did have some importance (it helped to establish the plot and characters) some parts of me were dying for that big twist or turn. The second problem I had involved editing. I feel that some parts of this book could've been edited down a bit - sometimes certain passages did more telling and showing, especially regarding day-to-day activities and physical features - but not the biggest of deals overall.
Perfect for fans of romantic suspense, April Canavan's Kismet is a book that will you bitting your nails, dying to know what will happen next. I can't wait wait to see where she takes this series next!
So I have been sitting on this review for a couple of weeks now. Not because the book was bad, it's the exact opposite actually. I've just had difficulty putting my words together on this review and I'm still not sure if I have the right words for this review I'm writing this right now..... Right so onto my review, I'm all about finding new author's or new to me author's, which Mrs. Canavan is to me. The synopsis is what really drew me into wanting to reading this book.
I will say this I went back and forth with Maya's character. I liked her and than she bugged me a bit, than I went back to liking her. I kind of found her anger at Brian choosing his girlfriend at the time a little ridiculous. But at the same time I found her likable after everything that happened to her, even though she kind of retreated into herself, which is totally and completely understandable. But I liked watching come out of her shell and found her to be stronger.
I will also say I had my own issues with Brian, at the same time that I was having issues with Maya. I thought he was honorable for turning Maya down when he had a girlfriend. There was also a point where I considering throat punching Brian and thought he was a cheater. But really would you can you consider it cheating when he doesn't have a girlfriend and wasn't dating Maya? No, maybe, maybe not. I guess it just depends on your own opinion. I also thought he took his sweet ar$e time admitting his feelings for Maya.
I will say this, this book hooked me from the start and held it through out the entire book. I thought this book held the right amount of suspenseful-ness and mystery for a book. As I mentioned I loved watching these two character's grow and their relationship grow. I will say that at times I felt there were parts of the story missing and it left me with more questions. I will say though I thoroughly enjoyed Jake's character and he brought a lightness to the book.
I'm giving this book 4.5 Stars out of 5 and can't wait to read Jake's book!!!!
Let me just start off by saying that when I read the blurb that we were given I signed up immediately! I was hooked and needed to know more about how things took place and what happened at the end. Needless to say that I was not disappointed and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time waiting for the ball to drop. Even time something crazy happened you would just tailspin into something else! I loved every part of this book and I am hoping there is more to come!!
Maya.... what can I say about this amazingly strong woman who was put through some pretty horrific stuff and just when she starts to heal, life throws crap all over it and breaks her. I was so shocked at the things this woman went through and even after those things still had to deal with petty crap. I loved how this author wrote such an incredible brutal scene and you just felt what Maya was going through. (I had knots in my stomach from having the images in my head but what a powerful thing to read.)
This book had so many men throughout and I loved reading about each of them. I do have to say that Brian was NOT my favorite and I wanted to punch him so many times!! He may have been older than Maya but he sure didn't act like it when it really mattered! In the end he resurrected himself from the grave I dug him into. Jake on the other hand had me from the beginning!! All hotness and being the sexy detective of the police department and so hell bent on finding this person! I also enjoyed Ryan, Brian's dad, he was a man I thought we would get more time with but he just was in the background.
As much as I do not enjoy reading from this point of view I still highly enjoyed it because of the story that was being told. A fair warning that it has very tough issues throughout this book and some parts could be hard to read. I am a new fan of this author though because it was told in such a way that was respectful and you could just tell she did her research to make sure to get it right. Congrats on this awesome book!!
*Possible Spoilers* Kismet (Birch County Blue Book 1) was a page turner for sure. I didn't care for the main character, Maya, at first because her anger toward officer Brian for "rejecting" her seemed a bit ridiculous. I mean, what kind of person wants someone who would just up and leave someone after they find out someone else likes them? So that kind of annoyed me. I just couldn't understand why she would be so angry at him. I mean, let someone know how you feel, but don't feel rejected because they don't immediately dump their current partner...
As I read, I did end up changing my mind on Maya and really liked her and related to her as the story progressed. I realized that not everyone will have a perfect emotional reaction and not everyone will act the way we want them to or as we would. This makes characters more human.
Also, this story kept me wanting more. I wanted to know what was coming next. I found myself dreaming about the story when I fell asleep and not wanting to put it down while I was awake. I like a fast paced story. I like when I can't immediately guess who the villain is. I love when I want more after I finish a book.
I also love when a story invokes emotion. There were times when I found myself on the verge of tears because I completely related to the characters. Definitely a great read. If you like a book that keeps you wanting more, read this. If you want a book that immerses you in the story, read this. Hell, just read this! Can't wait for the next in the series.
“It wasn’t until after their divorce that Maya realized she had always lived her life by giving up her own happiness for everyone else.”
Completely relatable and alternately emotional, stoic and strong, Maya is every woman whose been through a painful failed relationship trying to navigate feelings and needs and wants as a single adult. Trying to find happiness. I loved her. I’ve been her. Brian is also very relatable. Sometimes infuriating, sometimes clueless, probably not worth the initial heartache…but then maybe he is.
This started out as a relatable tale of unrequited love, then developed into a much deeper story with the introduction of a brutal attacker and the complex emotions involved in surviving the event. The thought processes of the attacker added another layer to the story, which I found interesting and made it difficult put the book down. There were a few times I thought there were mildly unrealistic plot points (the dispatcher has a gun and is being stalked; she stays home alone but doesn’t keep the weapon in her room when going to bed; the police are very worried but leave her unprotected ) but the best stories often require slight suspension of logic and overall the book easily draws you in and leaves you wanting more. The peripheral characters are interesting enough you want to know their stories. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next installment of this series in the hopes of learning more about them.
I haven't read a lot of mystery books for quite a while and am glad I jumped back in with a book like Kismet. The book captures the reader and draws them in to the horrific story of Maya and her stalker.
The author is spectacular at describing the disturbing scenes when Maya is attacked, so I am certainly adding a trigger warning here. However, as a result of the author's way with words in these instances, the reader is drawn into the tale and cannot escape until the very end.
While I thoroughly loved this book, I did find a few faults. In the beginning of Kismet, the characters do tend to seesaw somewhat. At times some characters seem to jump from one emotion to another without much provocation. This eases though as the story develops, and the characters then maintain a believable course for their personalities.
In addition, there were times when action was building and the author chose to cut away from this action. While she did come back to it, to explain the finer details, sometimes it threw me out of the moment when all I really wanted to do was immerse myself in the story. Once again, though, this is minor and I would really like to recommend Kismet ot those who love a good cop story or procedural mystery.
Over all, I am giving Kismet by April Canavan 4 out of 5 stars.
The mystery genre isn’t something I’ve read a lot of, I generally gravitate more towards darker taboo reads, I like the unknown, the grit, the suspense. April Canavan delivered a nail biting, emotionally charged, suspenseful book that will have you on the edge of your seat. Well done!
The moment he laid eyes on her he knew it was kismet. Fate. Destiny. She was his… she just didn’t know it yet...
Maya is a divorcee and a dispatcher for Birch County PD. Brian is a Deputy for Birch County, a single father in a not so loving relationship with his live-in girlfriend. Maya is in love with Brian, her friend and co-worker, Brian’s feeling for Maya are much the same, but they both face challenging hurdles before they can ever even think of being together. Do they have what it takes to survive what is about to be thrown at them? Maya especially.
I am a first-time reader of April Canavan, and I absolutely loved the storyline, it was captivating and very suspenseful. At times, I thought the author jumped scenes too quickly, and that’s why I’ve given 4 stars! Fantastic read. I would recommend to a friend.
Conflicting, suspenseful, emotional dramatic romance Kismet: A Romantic Suspense Police Romance (Birch County Blue Book 1) is full of high drama with emotion and danger at the forefront. The characters are deeply involved, highly conflicted and mired in self doubt which makes their story engaging in a roller coaster way. There’s ups and downs constantly. Brian and Maya fall in love even though they never even dated! Brian is a good man who makes A LOT of mistakes! He’s not irredeemable though and Maya is a strong woman who fights for what she wants when she’s able to. Overall, Kismet is full of great characters, a highly detailed plot with plenty of suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seat. This author created a story that builds anticipation and tension throughout and sets up the next book in the series nicely as well as an exciting and promising HEA for Maya and Brian. I read an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems and voluntarily share my review.
** Review by Kylie from Bloggers From Down Under **
When you encounter something by chance that seems like it was meant to be, then it could be considered Kismet, your destiny.
When Andrew helped Maya after she slipped, he knew instantly that she was the one for him........even if the feelings aren't mutual. In fact, Maya barely knows that Andrew exists. But after he breaks into her house and assaults her, Maya is about to know Andrew in a way she never ever wanted too.
But Maya survives, much to Andrews dismay. And now she's a target. A target for his sick and twisted game.
Will Maya's friends and family be able to save her in time, when Andrew strikes again?
And will she get away alive again?
An intense read that makes you sit up and pay attention to every single word written. A story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I haven't been gripped by a book in so long, and this one just hit the spot!! I couldn't put it down much to my daughter's disapproval.
I loved the character of Maya from the get go, i could relate to her at times! I felt anger and let down by Brian but he soon won me round. My heart broke for Jake. I want to know more about Terri!
I loved the suspense and the way the book drew me in, and i loved the honesty of Brian's family especially his kids. My mind went crazy trying to work out who the stalker was. Needless to say I was wrong.
This book stirred up so many emotions for me, and the author clearly made sure to transport as if you were a fly on the wall. I cant wait for the next book. There is still so much more I need to know!
This is a new author for me and what an introduction! This is book one in the Birch County Blue series. Maya is a 911 dispatcher and is no stranger to the layered world we live in. She hears the good and the bad that comes through those phone lines. One night, her life changes completely as she finds herself a victim. She survives and becomes a target. Brian is the Deputy Sheriff and his character takes a hit on so many levels with what happens to Maya. Both of these characters are attracted to one another but fate is not ready to truly put them together yet. What an amazing, action packed story that will keep your emotions running! This book is definitely a gem! I voluntarily read and reviewed this book that I received as an ARC from Hidden Gems.
Brian can't seam to get anything right. Maya is in trouble. After everything that has happened to her in the last couple of months I don't blame her for not wanting to even come out of her house. But she NEEDS to start healing. She thought that Brian would help but he has not been any help lately. Maybe if they could find the man who tried to kill her she might be able to live again. We will see what happens. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout. I loved every minute of this book! It was very well written and had me never wanting to put it down. April Canavan did an excellent job at describing the disturbing scenes when Maya was attacked! Now she just needs to write another book with Jake's story!!
What an amazing read! It will take you on an amazing roller coaster ride and keep you in suspense till the very end. April Canavan is a master storyteller who takes you in to her characters lives so you experience all they are feeling and see what they see. I laughed, I cried, I related to the character Maya. Definitely a must read!
I wasn't expecting to finish this book I as fast as I did. I couldn't seem to get enough free time to read. It caught me in its grips, wanting to know Maya and what was happening to her. I will say there are triggers in this book but it so helps you get the feel of what is happening to the characters. I look forward to reading more of this series!!
Talk about suspenseful! Loved it! This story had you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. It helps you realize what victims of crimes go through and how the support of people around them is really important. Between the suspense and the romance, this book is full of both. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love a good romance but this book has more than romance. I will add a *Trigger Warning* for a couple of passages where the main character is attacked. I didn't want to put the book down (except for when I HAD to) and I can't wait to read about what happens next!
So many freaking emotions! She wrecked me with this book. Reached into my chest and wrapped her fingers right around my heart and ripped it right out of my chest leaving me bleeding out!
