Man and wolf. Sworn enemies in the battle for Askara. Can hate and betrayal ever lead to love?

Caleb Harken has spent six years wrongfully imprisoned for his father’s treachery. Tortured and reviled by the very wolf pack he should have been leading as Alpha, he is not surprised to learn he’s finally to meet his death at the hands of the human rebel leader, Taegan Callan.

Taegan gave up his dreams of a life-mate and a family after seeing too many humans butchered at the hands of the wolves—even if Caleb doesn’t seem to be the bloodthirsty savage he expects, and even if he starts to long for a different kind of future with the wolf.

Can Caleb become the Alpha he was always meant to be and lead his pack, or will he finally realize that winning his freedom means nothing when he has already lost his heart?

Bullets and Babies!

Victoria writes about guys loving other guys in between dodging bullets, kidnappers, and serial killers. She enjoys putting them through hell to get their happy ever after—it’s a character flaw she embraces.

She also believes that family is who you choose, that dogs are often much wiser than human beings, and that we’re steadily destroying the world we live in.

And if people read more books, they'd be much happier.

You've got to hand it to the author. She knows how to throw you off your throne of presumptions and overconfidence regarding where the book will go next. After having read the book, I am laughing so hard at myself!

See, when I ended The Alpha King, I thought maybe the next story would be of Sam and Asher (please!), but when I read the blurb, I still thought it was going to be a couple getting together in the aftermath of the first one. But no, the events in this book happen simultaneously to those in book one. And they both collide at the end.

Now coming to the main review. Both the books couldn't have been any different! Where Kit made me cry at the abuse he had suffered and then the cuddling love he got from Luca, Caleb made me shudder with terror at what torture and trauma he had endured. Where Luca made me swoon for him by being a lovely, yet easy to mislead, alpha, Taegan made me go gaga over his strength and courage.

*spoilers ahead*

The biggest difference is that the characters who suffered abuse were an omega in the first book and an alpha in the second, with their saviours having the opposite roles. Caleb is the most genteel, quietly strong alpha I have ever come across, and it was such a novelty that I kept reading just to see what happened at the end.

Another difference is that where the first book had to put more focus on the world building so as to give us a clear idea for the whole series, the couple had to make do with their insta love and not getting much of on-page romance. But in book two, since the world building was already done, the main focus was on bringing the MCs together and also telling us simultaneously what was happening around them to bring the book to a close.

The only reason for my deducting a half star is that I really wanted more from the epilogue. Yes, I got Luca and Sam, and I know I should just be grateful for that, but what I wanted was a last but deep glimpse of the couple to last me until I next encountered them in another book. Everything else was ace! :)

My friends were right when they say I’ll still love this second book in the kingdom of Askara series but it’s different from the first one.

The book is ,to sum up, full of angst. However, a good and heartwarming kind of angst which gives you a HEA in the end. I loved both MCs, Caleb and Taegan. The characters in this one is surprisingly very realistic. The emotions, the conflict, the battle between love and life, those were very beautifully written.

Caleb is a broken toy who was imprisoned unfairly and wrongfully for six years. He has no hope and he has given up on his life already. Every joy he once knew in his life was stripped away from him and he was tortured physically and mentally every single day.

And Taegan hates, no loathes, all wolves. His father was allegedly murdered by a wolf and his living partner years ago also was butchered by wolves. His only intention in life is to kill as many wolves as possible and to rescue underaged working children.

And when these two met in the arena of Caleb’s pack house, unexpected events happened. Unknown and unwanted feelings stirred and discovered. It was such a beautifully written novel about how both of them have to battle their inner conflicts to be able to accept their inevitable intertwined fate.

Yes, I loved first book in the series a bit more than this one because it was such a cute and romantic story. But this book, this one impressed me a great deal. I guess Victoria Sue will become one of my automatic purchase authors in the future.

Love, love, loveeeeeed this one.

Still a very good hurt/comfort book, even though I wanted a bit more of the romance this time. There is so much story in this that I felt it sometimes overshadowed the romance and I never quite felt that Teagan and Caleb really knew each other.

-------------------------------

This was even better than the first book. If you’re looking for a true mates shifter story with massive amounts of hurt/comfort, look no further!

The one thing I liked a little less about the first book was that there was so much action and suspense that the main couple didn’t have all that time to actually be together. That’s why I was so happy with this one. It was still action packed and there were a lot of things going on, but there was also enough room for lots of character and relationship development. Although it has way less smex than the first book, but that never bothered me here.

I’m a bit hesitant to say you should read this as a stand-alone, because you would miss out on the entire world-building and I think that’s important to understand this story. Even though it is about a totally different couple who were not in the first book.

Caleb is a 25 year old wolf who has never been able to shift. His father was the Alpha of his pack until he died by the hand of Caleb’s uncle. Caleb’s uncle took over and immediately imprisoned Caleb when he was 19. Caleb has been tortured for 6 years and has given up the will to live long ago when his uncle drags him out of his room and has him enter a ritual. A blood ritual where he is up against a captured human. It is clear to Caleb he won’t stand a chance against the human since Caleb is starved and cannot shift. But the human doesn’t know that and is ready to kill the ‘evil wolf’. But then there is a ruckus and the humans escape, taking Caleb with them as a hostage.

When Teagan, the human rebel leader, takes the wolf with him he is planning to get information out of him and then kill him. But things don’t add up. The wolf doesn’t even look like a wolf. When he accidentally almost kills Caleb, Teagan rescues him without thinking. And it seems Caleb somehow trusts Teagan because he keeps falling asleep in his lap and snuggling in for warmth.

But Teagan has no idea what to do with the wolf who cannot shift. All he knows is that he doesn’t want to kill him anymore..

I loved how in the first book we had a human in the middle of an werewolf pack and here we had a wolf in the middle of humans. Both parties had so much prejudice toward each other. But both parties were also ready for change, just not everyone.

There is so much hurt/comfort in this, I was in book heaven. Caleb is such a hurt soul, body and mind. I loved how Teagan tried to be all badass rebel leader at first but could not help but be tender and loving with Caleb. He never wanted to hurt the sweet wolf.

I was happy to see the relationship had time to develop before the story was thrust into action once again. There isn’t a lot of sex in this, but somehow it felt fitting. It was more about building trust than it was about sex. And I was just fine with that.

It seems there will be more books in this series since we got a glimpse of everything that still needs fixing in the kingdom, so I’m eagerly awaiting the next book!

I absolutely loved book 1, The Alpha King in this series. I am normally not a big fan of mpreg, but I made an exception for that one, since it was so nicely done ;)

Of course when I found out that there was gonna be second book in this series, I jumped on it.

tenor.gif (244×152)

Even though this book is about a different couple than book 1, I would still advice reading the first book before starting this one. This mostly because of the worldbuilding that takes place in that one, but also because it's an awesome book !!

9GXx3.gif (500×200)

This book is centers around Caleb and Teagan.

Caleb is a wolf who can't shift. He is has been imprisoned by his own pack and severely abused for many years. He is come to the point where he has given up and is done.....

195628.gif (500×216)

During a ritual fight, he is taken prisoner by Taegan. He is the leader of a human group of rebels Taegan figures he can use Caleb as leverage. It doesn't take long for him to find out though, that Caleb is unlike any other wolf he has ever come across.

For some reason, Caleb seems to trust Teagan, which triggers all of Teagans protective instincts.

I promised to keep my review as spoilerfree as possible, so this is all your gonna get out of me about the storyline.

Sorry+not+sorry.gif (300×200)

I can however tell you how much I loved this book....which is a lot :P

There is a lot of hurt/comfort in this one, which is always a big plus for me. Though the steam was heavier in book 1, it still enough to keep me happy. I think this book centers a bit more on the comfort side. I really enjoyed watching their relationship build and even though I loved book 1, I loved this one just a tad more.

Now I don't know what kind of magic this author uses, but so far I haven't found a book that I didn't love.

tumblr_mztj5fnMkL1sivp02o1_500.gif (500×393)

It was wonderfully written and like any other book I have read by this author, I was pulled right in and I didn't stop until the end.

I also loved getting a snipped on how Luca was doing. I hope there will be many more book in this series, so I can read them all ;)

Still love this one so much.

Originally read September 2017

I am glad this book came out when it did. I've been in a reading slump lately and nothing new has appealed much less been 5 stars. Ms Sue delivered in spades. This series is getting better and better. I really, really liked book 1, The Alpha King, but I LOVED this one.

Caleb, for 6 years, has been beaten, starved and abused every which way. He's basically lost his will to live. When the opportunity presents itself, he decides now's the time end it all. Little does he know, Taegan, a leader of the human rebels, isn't just his way out of his pain, he's the strength he needs to be who he was meant to be.

I loved seeing these two grow close and develop their relationship. Even with all the turmoil and heartbreak, they were meant to be together..neither really fought it though each thought they were doing the right thing by letting go in the end. I loved how Taegan took care of Caleb to help him grow stronger. Poor Caleb had given up all hope of ever having what he'd always wanted. He needed someone to show him there was something out there for him to live for.

Now, the two did have their share of misunderstandings and distrust....things they need to work through. But it all comes together in the end as how it should be.

I can't wait for more. There are so many characters that could have stories and the world building is phenomenal. Ms Sue just needs to write faster...

M/M + paranormal = total book nirvana. The Alpha Heir was a lot more angsty and emotional than the first book, it even had me bubbling in parts and I ate it all up with a spoon. I'm hooked on this author's writing.

Straight on to the next book in the series.

4.5*

Having really enjoyed The Alpha King I couldn't wait to start this book but then I read the blurb....
And discovered this book is about a completely different couple that's right and it's not even Sam and Asher.
I was confused and upset and sulked for about 30 seconds I mean seriously who does this author think she is?
Obviously she's an author who knows exactly what she's doing because this book was fabulous and even before I'd finished the first page I was hooked.

This isn't always an easy read Caleb has suffered unbelievably for six years and to make it worse (if it could possibly be any worse) it's his own family that's tortured and abused him.
Caleb is at the point where he'd welcome death, he was once the Alpha-Heir but his inability to shift has ruined his life.
Taegan is the rebel leader and he hates wolves with a fierce passion. A wolf killed his father and destroyed his life, the cruelty he's witnessed from them is dreadful and they have to pay.

I loved poor Caleb, he's suffered so much and feels he deserves nothing and he's so grateful and amazed by any scrap of kindness.
Taegan is conflicted with his growing feelings for Caleb, these two are perfect for each other.

This is a great book and in my opinion it's even better than the previous one.
The author has created a fabulous world here and I hope she's going to continue on with this series since there's so much potential.

The second book in the series was wonderful. The mix of magic, folklore and love bring forth a powerful tale about struggle, acceptance and force of will. First part of the book is focused a little too much on what Caleb has been through and at times was difficult to read or process. I wish there was slightly less of it for my comfort but nevertheless the writing throughout the book is superb, the world building is amazing, the character development is marvelous, and the whole book is smashing good!

This is a story of two men who came together trough hate and murder but came out through fighting and love on the other side - the side where hope lives. Caleb is strength and perseverance, the true alpha who is waiting for his time without even realizing it. Taegan is a fighter and survivor but he is just and fair, and that is what sets him apart from other humans butchering the wolves. At first their connection does not feel real but forced due to chemistry but the longer they spend time together the more they come to love and respect each other. But as always walls have ears, people speaking out of turn and hurt feelings make for very big misunderstandings which start a chain of events that force great confrontation between wolves and humans. And as a result magic happens, justice is served and all becomes as it should have been. That was one awesome read and I highly recommend it!

So I like to go walking every morning despite the horrible humidity and blazing heat.

Picture a sweaty 50yrs old woman walking with tears and snot running down her face. That was me today! This fucking book gutted me. Poor Caleb had to suffer a lot before he got his happy ending. I fucking loved the feels this book invoked from me. It made the happy parts that much more heartwarming. *sigh*

I missed reading a good alpha/beta/omega book. This one was so goooooood! 🤩😍

I remember reading the first one of the series and having to DNF it because there was an omega involved and he kept fainting or having to be saved, I don't enjoy tropes like that much.

But this one? Lovely as hell, we have an alpha who is not a normal alpha and a human who is the leader of the rebels (the humans are kind of treated like slaves), they scape together and Caleb immediately imprints on Taegan, thei relationship was needy, difficult because of their positions and needed a lot of communication.

I loved how they both were alphas even though the real werewolve was the least alpha of the two, I loved the way Caleb went through being tortured to being strong, I loved the development, the ritual/mystery part, the side characters, the kid's, everything.

Real lovely stuff. 🥰😍

Before anything else, I need someone to explain why

THIS TOTALLY KILLED ME AND I DON'T GET IT!

Anyway...This was a lot different than the first book but also a lot the same. I really, really, really enjoyed it. This one really hurt though. Ugh. Poor Caleb. It was hard to read honestly.

The romance was paced perfectly for the characters and what they have been through. There was a lot going on with everyone and I love how it is all tying together with what we know from The Alpha King (Kingdom of Askara #1)

I can't wait for more.

Ugh!!! This book made me cry more than once!!! It was damn heart wrenching. I was hoping it would be more like book one, which imo had the perfect balance of romance, angst, and adventure. This second installment was all about the angst.
I can’t rate it anything less than 4 stars though because it still was a damn good story with a great cast of characters. I love that with each installment the author reveals more and more about the history of how the wolves came into power and the changes that are to come. I wish I had the willpower to resist reading until all the books in the series were out, but that’s just not going to happen.

LOOOOOVVVVEEEDDD THIS! Is there anything that Victoria Sue can't write!? Because I seriously love everything she creates and she writes such different types of stories - and I recommend them all!

While this story features a new couple, I would still recommend that you start with the first book in this series to get a better feel for the world building, the history between the wolves and humans, and the kingdoms.

Caleb is a wolf who is unable to shift. He has been held captive by his pack and family, tortured and abused, beaten, and has basically reached a point where he would prefer death than to continue life the way he is. Caleb is taken prisoner by Taegan, the leader of the human rebels, and the wondrous hurt/comfort commences!

Taegan is in charge of the human rebels in the area. At first, he thinks he can use Caleb as bargaining power to rescue the kidnapped children, but he quickly discovers that Caleb is not your typical wolf. He finds himself wanting to care for Caleb, and discovers that the two are actually bonded. I love the little moments between these two, how careful and caring Taegan is for Caleb, how they come together so naturally and beautifully.

I don't want to say too much to give things away, other than I LOVED this story. Beautifully written, and I loved all the characters in this. Can't wait for the next book in the series, as there is clearly a ways to go before every kingdom is fixed. Also? Loved getting a little update with Luca and his family. Twins!

So this is turning into an every 6 months re-read. Cannot speak more highly of it than that. This is truly just the perfect story for me.

Original ReviewYes. Exactly that. So much hurt and comfort this book is in its own ocean of pain. This has always been one of my favorite types of books to read - broken and damaged hero or heroine and someone who helps save them (or helps them save themselves).

This was a cute one. I felt bad to Caleb and seeing Teagan fall in love with him was nice. I was glad to see Luca make an appearance in this one. The one thing I had an issue with was the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING again. I ignored it with the last book but this one made me roll my eyes. Hoping we escape that in the next book.

The Alpha Heir is the second in the Kingdom of Askara series, but it actually runs concurrently with book one, The Alpha King. Told from both Caleb and Taegan's points of view there is slightly less world-building and a bit more romance than The Alpha King.

Victoria Sue certainly knows how to put her characters through hell and bring them through to the other side. I loved that it is a human who hates wolves that bonds with Caleb and ultimately helps him heal from the mistreatment of his own kind.

While The Alpha Heir contains some pretty graphic descriptions of torture, the hurt/comfort in this is strong with some really good character development and a wonderfully paced romance considering what Caleb has been through.

Joel Leslie captures the emotion of the story well with crisp pacing and easily distinguishable character voices.

I wish the ending didn't feel so rushed...I would have liked to have had more time with Caleb and Taegan as mates, but there is some set up to the third book The Alpha Prince which will hopefully tie up some loose ends.

Overall this was an entertaining listen, but I would recommend reading/listening to The Alpha King before starting this.

*NOTE* There is no mpreg in this.

Story = 3.5 Stars; Narration = 4 stars = 3.75 Stars total.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

The Alpha Heir is book 2 in the Kingdom of Askara series and although it features a new couple, Caleb and Taegan, I would personally advise you read book 1 first. Victoria Sue has created an interesting and quite substantial world around the wolves in this series and a lot of that world building happens in book 1 around Luca and Kit’s story.

Caleb, an alpha wolf, is the character that will pull at your heartstrings and the author pulls no stops with the abuse he has had to endure during the last six years whilst he has been unfairly imprisoned. Caleb hopes every day for death but each day just brings more pain and loneliness. His family are evil and they are determined to grab power any way they can.

Taegan is the leader of a group of human rebels and he despises everything to do with the wolves. Most of his hate comes from personal experience and devastating loss so when he takes Caleb prisoner he should readily hate the man – but he doesn’t, this brings out a range of emotions and not all of them are good. Taegan was a difficult character to like initially and I guess that came from the knowing what Caleb had gone through as a reader whilst waiting for Taegan to catch up. Compassion for the battered man almost comes involuntarily as Taegan is finding it difficult to understand why he cares – and he cares a lot it would seem!

As always with a Victoria Sue book you will run a gamut of emotions before reaching ‘The End’. This is slow burn and it takes forever for this pair to first get their act together and then be brave enough to go after what they want. The Alpha Heir moves this series forward once again, dismissing myths and creating new legacies. There is as usual a good support crew of secondary characters and I am very much looking forward to the third book in the series to see where we go next.

Same formula as the pervious book: an unlikely alpha and an impossible mate, a dream of change and a traitor in their midst, power-hungry kinsfolk and brutal situations, the feeling of abandonment caused by misunderstanding and a only a death sentence to mend the drift just in a different territory and with a different cast – but that's what makes the difference. Here the main characters are affected and nearly broken by their past, they own the responsibility of their decisions and their mate bond is not enough to heal their souls without them accepting that they have a future on their own.

So I enjoyed this book more than the first and it certainly helped that no mpreg or omega status was
needed for their happy end. Who needs a magic pregnancy when he has the love of a kid like Gia.

Just a word about the epilog: although I really liked Luca's cameo I could have done without that part or at least I would need something different than this wishy-washy decision making. I don't appreciate if the couple falls back into their errors of the past, not if we're already in the epilog.

Release Day Review: WOW!! Victoria Sue is one of my auto-buy authors and this second book in the Kingdom of Askara series did not disappoint. I was so taken by the story and characters in book 1 that I wasn't sure if anything could live up to them. I should not have worried :-)

Although this book is about a different couple, I would advise reading book 1 first, not just so you don't miss out on lots of world-building, but because it is an amazing book!

This is the story of Caleb and Taegan. Caleb is an alpha wolf, imprisoned for years by his power-hungry uncle and bat-sh*t crazy aunt. Taegan is the leader of the human rebels. Can you see where this is going? Both men have been through more than enough, but there will be much more to come.

I love the world Victoria Sue has created and the story kept me turning pages. Be forewarned, if you have trouble putting down a book, don't start this late in the evening! I read it straight through.

There is much hurt/comfort in this book. Geez, I cried many tears for Caleb!

I don't do spoilers, so no plot giveaways here, but suffice it to say this is a terrific story and the secondary characters are varied and interesting. Taegan's mother was a favorite.

I'm thrilled this is a series, because I can't wait for the next book!

From the first moment I met Caleb, he completely stole my heart... He made me cry, made me cheer for his future, and for a future where he and Taegan could be more than enemies... Their story is not an easy one, but these amazing guys will take you into a great journey into their lives, fears, hopes and into their hearts...

All the hurt, pain and misery of being imprisoned and treated as less than a slave for years, lead Caleb into what he thought would be his only chance at freedom... to die at the hands of Taegan, the human rebel leader. Taegan wanted revenge, to vindicate the lost lives of his friends and family that were killed by the wolves, they were enemies and nothing would stay in his path of revenge... or so he thought...

Caleb and Taegan couldn't be more different... they were from different species, they were enemies, but they found in each other, the strength they didn't knew they were missing.

Victoria Sue knows how to keep us enthralled from the first page of her books until the last one, and to leave us wanting more!!!

The Alpha Heir is one more amazing addition to this series and I can't wait for the next book.

Five fantastic stars!

When I read the first book in this series, The Alpha King, I didn't know it would be a series. I was so happy to later learn that Victoria Sue would be writing more stories in this world. You don't need to have read the Alpha King to enjoy this new story but you really should because it is such a great book.

Victoria Sue loves to put her characters through hell but she never fails to bring them back again. This story contains some pretty graphic descriptions of torture but rest assured that everything comes out OK in the end.

This love story between a human and his sworn enemy, a werewolf, is filled with words that had me laughing, crying, wincing and everything in between. There is no doubt that Taegan and Caleb are meant to be together but at times I wondered how in the world it would ever happen. The Alpha Heir is also filled with love of family and friends and the lengths they will go to in order to protect the ones that they love.

Victoria Sue writes stories that grab my emotions and The Alpha Heir is no exception. I can't wait for the next one in this series; The Alpha Prince is coming in November.

It’s hard to say that The Alpha Heir is a sequel to Victoria Sue’s The Alpha King because it’s truly a standalone in its own right. You do not need to read the Alpha King to read this. However, you should. The Alpha King does make an appearance in this and it’s cool if you understand his story. But you can start here if you’d like.

So, let’s talk about this book. I thought book one shred my heart. It was nothing compared to this one. Caleb’s life, or should I say Caleb’s torture had me in tears. I genuinely ached for him. I can’t imagine the pain and torment he’s been through. I’m shocked his heart didn’t just give up. And doesn’t that just show you his strength. I mean this guy suffers to the bitter end. Victoria Sue is NOT nice to him. But great rulers… TRULY great ones are born from the ashes. They suffer, they struggle, they learn, and they flourish. And that is our Caleb. Brave and beautiful.

Then there’s Taegan. I knew when he was introduced that he was important. Funny enough, when we first meet him he had no name. Caleb describes him and I was all, “Yup, he’s someone we need to know.” And I was right. He’s vital to Caleb’s journey. And even though they are on different sides of a brutal war, they fight for the same thing.

Victoria Sue does not hold back even a little bit with this book. It’s brutal in parts. I cringed and had to remind myself to breathe and tell myself it’s not real life. But she really pulls you in and you can’t help but scream at the characters. Yell at the injustice. Cheer the victories. This book took my breath away quite a few times. It’s as dark and gritty as the first but it’s all worth it in the end.
I absolutely recommend this book!

The Alpha Heir is the second book in Victoria Sue’s Kingdom of Askara series. Like the first book, this story has some great world building, this time focused on a different pack as well as much more on the humans than The Alpha King. In fact, aside from the shared world, this story stands pretty much on its own. It appears from the ending that the stories actually overlap in timelines, as this book ends around the time Luca assumes the throne in the first book. So you could probably actually read this as a standalone given the characters are mostly new, but I think having a familiarity with the basics of the world will help you understand this one.

As I said, this book looks at Askara from a different viewpoint than the first story, with much more focus on the human rebels and how they interact with the wolves. It was a nice change of perspective to give us a more rounded view of the world. I liked getting to see how the humans are surviving under the wolves’ tyrannical control and how they have adapted to being essentially slaves. We also get a glimpse into the darker side of the wolves than we get in the first book, as Mason and his parents are evil and running a horrible pack. They are trying to find a way to assume power now that they have gotten Caleb and his father out of the way, and they have all kinds of evil plans going on. I found this aspect interesting, though at times confusing. I had trouble following all the politics of the different packs and different members, as well as the lore that accompanies the role of alpha and the passing of duties down to the heirs. So I think it would have helped to have this either better explained, or perhaps simplified. Looking over my review for book one, I found I had a similar concern there. So this is a really well developed world, but definitely one I have found a little too complex at times.

Even though it is my fault, it has been far too long since I was enmeshed in the kingdom of Askara. ‘The Alpha King’, book one in the series, was absolutely fabulous and I fell in love with the worldbuilding along with many characters. Anticipating this second installment and then reading the description had my heart hurting for Caleb before I even read the first page. I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I was in for one hell of a ride with Caleb and Taegan.

In the eyes of wolves, most wolves anyway, Caleb is an abomination. His mother was a hybrid, something not allowed among wolves. His old pack didn’t find this out until Caleb was nineteen and then his alpha father was killed in a farce of a challenge, and Caleb has spent the past six years locked away and tortured abominably. For you see, Caleb can’t shift, and except for his superior sense of smell he is, to all intents and purposes, human. Caleb is more than ready to die when he is taken by Taegan, a rebel leader, in the hopes that Caleb’s uncle, Warwick the alpha, will consider a prisoner exchange for Caleb. In only a couple of days Caleb’s wolf recognizes Taegan as his true mate and bonds with him, much to Taegan’s dismay.

Silas is a two-hundred-year-old wolf with no pack who lives near the rebels and is a close friend of Taegan’s. Silas is the one who realizes why Warwick has kept Caleb alive all of these years and, more importantly, why his son, Mason, and his wife, Jacind-aa, have done all the horrible atrocities they have upon Caleb’s physical self. Caleb, even being only a quarter human, is the true Alpha-heir. When Warwick cheated in his challenge to Caleb’s father, the alpha powers didn’t transfer to Warwick. Because Mason had been designated as the heir when Caleb’s father feared Caleb would never shift, Mason can’t kill Caleb or he’ll lose the powers altogether. They need Caleb to die at the hands of a human. But now Caleb knows that Mason disfigured his neck because Caleb carried the alpha mark and Mason didn’t. So heartbreaking for Caleb to discover they never meant for him to live.

Loved this follow up in the Askara series - good storyline, which was both a plot in its own as well as the vehicle to show the MCs developing relationship. Good read and recommended - 4.5 stars.

Book & Author: The Alpha Heir by Victoria Sue
Rating: 5 Stars

I’m hooked! I need more, I want more, and I’m low on patience! This book had me right from the start. From the poor suffering that Caleb had to go through the cruelty that they inflicted on him for years to the strength and conviction that Taegan had even through the horrors that he has seen.

Victoria Sue knows how to wrap you up in a story of deep emotion and fearful suspense and undying love. She also knows how to be mean and suck you in, torturing you until the last possible moment. I cannot tell you how many times reading this I had to put it down from the pain I felt for the characters or how mad I would get at her for her beautiful words and damaged characters.

Watching the evolution of Caleb in this story broke me. I wanted so much for him to heal, to gain the strength back that was stolen from him. He had to get that fight back inside him for that to happen and that wasn’t easy, he was so ready to die, so ready to have the pain he lived through stop. Victoria Sue made him work for it, and I don’t mean just a little bit but to the very freaking end! But each obstacle mental or otherwise made him he was meant to be in the end and watching that was truly amazing.

Taegan was this down-to-earth, humble man that had an inner strength to rival any creature. The life he has led since joining the rebellion was not an easy one but one that he made the best of to save the most people. I loved his mother and Silas and Gia and all the secondary characters that not only were vital to the main characters but helped push the story forward.

What I love about this author’s stories are that she writes with heart. She gives so much to each piece of a story that there's no way to keep an emotional distance. Her words make you live what they are living. From the happy and sexy to the brutal and heartbreaks, she creates a world we want to delve into to. I mean you want to rant and cry at her the whole time, but dang are the tears worth the happy ending she gives us.

I defy you not to have your heart broken by MC Caleb. He's been brutally tortured and humiliated at the hands of his uncle and his pack for years. He's ready to die until he discovers his mate and is given a reason to fight, to love, to live.
The other MC is Taegan who in meantime is a leader of a human rebel group part of the wider Human Alliance who are trying to take back power from the wolves. While on a rescue mission Taegan comes across Caleb and thinking he can use him as leverage against his alpha uncle he takes Caleb with him. It soon becomes clear that Caleb has been tortured and kept prisoner.
I loved seeing the slow build between Taegan and Caleb. At first Taegan fights the pull he feels towards Caleb - he's a wolf after all and his mortal enemy. However seeing the state Caleb is in, when they first reached the rebels hide out, Taegan can't help but take care of Caleb and nursing him back to health. Their first kiss was so tentative and sweet but it opened the flood gates for Caleb.
I like how Caleb and Taegan were true mates and bonded despite one being a wolf and the other human which is unusual in shifter novels. It added to the slow build as Taegan was conflicted about his feelings for Caleb.

There's no mpreg in this book like there is in book 1 but seeing the way Caleb is with little Gia, Anna and the other pups both human and wolf makes up for that and is adorable.
You probably can read book 2 as a standalone but I think you get more out of it by having read the first one. I love this series and can't wait for the third book.

I had so much fun with this book, it was so good and enjoyed it even more then the first one. Caleb is such an amazing and strong character, I adored him from the start and his growth throughout is incredible as you learn his past. Taegan has been through so much too and he is an amazing leader, I liked seeing him learn another view though and it was lovely to see him develop.

This story has such an interesting plot with plenty of dark and serious tones, with a few twist and turns that I found interesting not to mention the hurt/comfort throughout. I adored Taegan and Caleb individually, their mating bond and relationship I feel could have done with more development but I also enjoyed that it wasn't completely perfect. Both have a lot they need to work on in the future and the amount of care they have for their people/pack is amazing, I loved the ending so much it was just such a sweet and perfect fit to these twos story.

Oh let's not forget the children who were so cute and amazing characters from Kyan to Gia who I loved. The whole cast and world is developed wonderfully though, I really enjoyed Silas with his ongoing support and Renee who is just awesome in her own right. Even the villains are fascinating in their awful ways.

I enjoyed this book so much, it was a beautiful hurt/comfort with such an amazing and interesting story along with lovely character building. I loved every moment, can't wait to read the next.

***4.5 stars***

First off....Victoria Sue thank you for such a wonderful sequel to the The Alpha King.

Just an FYI: Technically this book can be read as a standalone because the characters here are not related in the first book. In fact, the way this story is written, it is somewhat happening simultaneously as the events in the first book are taking place. That is until the end when the the two books cross paths in the Epilogue. I do have to say it is nice to have a small update on Kit and Lucas.

I loved the angst and chemistry between the two MCs, however I do have to that say the sexy times in this book pale in comparison to the first book. Although it works here, given the circumstances. I have no doubt Caleb and Taegan will be mentioned in future since the Kingdom of Askara still has a lot of wrongs to right.
