Can I Tell You About...?

Can I Tell You About Self-Harm?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals

Meet Asher - a teenager who self-harms to manage their feelings when it all feels like too much. The latest in the best-selling Can I Tell You About... series describes what self-harm is, along with the wide range of behaviours that qualify, why teens do it, and how to get help if you feel the need to self-harm. Reflecting on the different aspects of self-harming behaviour, including treatment of injuries and scars, this concise introduction dispels common myths and offers helpful resources to break the cycle of self-harm. By initiating the conversation around self-harm, this guide will offer alternative avenues for children and young adults to pursue when dealing with big feelings, such as professional counselling, distraction, and friends and family. This easy-to-read guide is suitable for readers 7+, along with their parents, teachers, and friends. All author royalties from the book will go towards the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust.

A quick, educational read on why people may self harm, what you can do, what you shouldn't do and other helpful tips.

The eye opener for me was an early point made that self harm doesn't have to be physical and can manifest in ways such as not taking care crossing the road or simply not taking proper care of yourself. There seemed to me to be crossovers with addictions like gambling or drug & alcohol.

The book is only 60 odd pages with large font but every page counts and there are some suggestions for further reading or support.

Read as part of my work as a school social worker. I didn't really learn anything new here except perhaps that self-harm is multi-dimensional in that it doesn't just include physical harm but also self-neglect. Not the most uplifting read but written in a way that makes it very accessible to young people and those who support them.

This is a very well constructed book making a difficult subject very accessible. I have used it with some of the students who I work with, I'm a therapist, to initiate some very important conversations. I particularly appreciated the compassion of the author which was evident throughout. Thank you.
