Cannon's kisses were magical. When he kissed me with passion, I always went weak in the knees and when he planted a quick kiss to my mouth before leaving for work, I always reached out for more, but when he kissed me like he did right then, soft and gentle, it was a promise. A promise to always love me and be with me.

5 Tortured Mate stars!!

This was hands-down my favorite novel in the series!! Matt has been a favorite character of mine since we first met him in Veronica and Hutch's story, and I couldn't wait to see him finally experience his own HEA. He is the polite, shy, and closeted gay shifter of Burden who has been used by both Veronica and Presley to make their own mates jealous, and I couldn't wait for him to get his own mate and the love he so desperately wanted.

However as much as I loved him from the previous books, I have to admit that a small, tiny part of me kinda hated him in this novel because of how he treats Cannon! His reasoning is explained and I understood where he was coming from, but damn watching that scene with Jenny and witnessing Cannon's resulting heartbreak was brutal to say the least. But Cannon's never-ending patience and love for his mate was able to guide them both through their rough courtship, and their story just destroyed me in the best way. In the end, the pull of their mate bond and their scorching chemistry proved to be undeniable to them both, and their story ended up being the perfect goodbye to all of our beloved Burden characters. I will definitely be starting the spin-off series next, starting with Cannon's sister who I loved, as I'm desperate to read more by Candace Ayers!

Well written and funny, with an awesome cast of supporting characters, however, Matt's internalized homophobia and his insistence on 'staying in the closet' ruined this book for me. I understand that he was scared but, given the town's acceptance of Cannon (his mate) being out and proud, his continued hesitation didn't really make sense. I was still willing to give him a chance and work with him, until he pulled that stunt at the bar showing up with that girl. Nope. Nah uh. No go. He killed any love I had for him all the way dead. Cannon deserved much better. Matt, KNOWING he was hurting Cannon, and still continuing to push to have him in his life on his terms, was beyond selfish and I'm glad Cannon's sister called him on it. I really understood where he was coming from at first, but the longer the story went on, the more ridiculous the whole thing seemed. Not to mention the fact that Cannon could have told him, ages before Sam did, that everyone already knew. I get that he wanted him to decide to come out for himself, but the whole reason he was staying in the closet didn't even exist! Tell him and move on with your lives!

Matt's water tower gesture did not make up for everything he had done, and I was not impressed. Great storytelling and cast (LOVED Sam), and it's good that I didn't dislike Matt at the end, but he never fully recovered in my eyes. 3 stars

I was afraid that as the only m/m story in this series and by someone who is primarily a m/f writer that this wouldn't be good or have any heat, but happily I was wrong. I was also pleased that I didn't need to read any of the other books in the series to be able to understand this story. The only problem with the book--and it's a pretty big one that's mentioned again and again in reviews--is Matt's refusal to be open about Cannon as his mate. As the story develops you can see how ridiculous this is. I think if the town itself, his family, and his friends were different then it would have been a different story. I have a hard time believing that, no matter what his past, Matt was that clueless. It made me really dislike Matt at points for how he acknowledges the pain he's putting his mate through yet keeps doing it to greater and greater extremes. Poor Cannon! As for the heat...the scenes were pretty steamy but a little less realistic without the use of lubricants (one of my pet peeves). I would read more m/m by this author (don't read straight stuff at all).

Great ending to a great series!

This was the perfect book to end the series on. Matt deserves his perfect ending just as much as the first five book individuals did.
Matt has a pretty rough life and everything he has he earned him self through hard work and determination. So when his mate turns up and threatens to change his perfect little world he has going he wants to fight that bond. But with some of his most loved family and friends he is shown that he can the best of everything g if he will just let himself. Everyone is routing for him and have his back!

I am not very interested in m/m romance but I loved this book! You get so invested in Matt’s character through the previous books in this series. It didn’t matter and I just couldn’t read it fast enough to get to happy ending that I craved so much for!

Not my type of book

Started to read the newest of the series. Can not give a true rating. I love the paranormal romance novels, but I just could not get into this one. Not my kind of romance.

Matt
Bears of Burden #6
Matt and Cannon

First off, this is not normally a story I would have bought. I loved the first book in this series and just bought the next 5 books without looking too closely at them. That’s on me. That being said, it was a good story.

Matt finally meets his fated mate when his assistant rescues an injured bear shifter and brings him to his vet clinic. He has no idea who this man is, or what he looks like. He just knows he’s his.
Cannon was unlucky enough to take a couple of gunshots to the chest defending his sister. Now he’s unsure where he is, where his sister is. He can barely stay conscious, but he knows he’s unexpectedly drawn to the smell of the man helping him.
Cannon is thrilled to find his mate. He’s ready to settle down and live a contented life with the one bear made just for him. Unfortunately Matt is pushing him away.
Matt grew up in a very different world than his mate. His father really did a number on him. Physically, emotionally and psychologically. He was taught he was an abomination, not normal. So he’s hidden his true self from everyone his entire life.
While he wants his mate, he can’t come out and claim him. It’s tearing both of them up.
I loved Cannon. He was a great character. So comfortable with who he was. He was a great brother and uncle to his young niece. And so incredibly patient with Matt.
Matt drove me crazy. I understand his reluctance to come out. But it’s like he intentionally ignored the people around him, and assumed how everyone would react. Not trusting his closest friends.
Not a bad story, just not what I would typically read.

An Awesome Read!!

I loved reading MATT(Bears of Burden Book 6). All about Matt Jennings a bear-shifter who is gay and the local town Veterinarian & Cannon Ray who is a bear-shifter is gay and a Firefighter. They met when Matt’s assistant Presley brought Cannon in in bear form shot three times in the chest in the back of her car. The author wrote a story about a man who was shamed by his father for being gay, and has stayed hidden his whole adult life because being different as a bear shifter just isn’t the norm! So when Matt realizes the bear he’s treating for gun shot wounds is his mate he shuts that down. But when Cannon comes too he wants to claim his mate, even though his mate lies and says I’m not your mate! Read about Cannon & Matt and see if because they are different, they should not be mates, or is the opposite going to be true when you mate it’s for life!! This was a phenomenal series!! I read all six books and each book got better and better!! Now I can’t wait to read She-Shifters Of Hell’s Corner Book 1 Wolf Boss. This is Carter Ray’s Book she’s Cannon’s sister and it seems she also a bear-shifter who is mated to a wolf!!! Read this author she writes amazing stories, that are hot, passionate and just about everyday life but in the shifter world!! Take a shot you won’t be disappointed!!!

Presley found Cannon wounded in the middle of the road late at night in the last book. She took him to Matt, hoping to save him. Matt saved him, but at what cost? Matt thought being gay meant there was no mate for him. Only a couple of people in town even know he's gay. He could lose everything if it gets out. Cannon knows as soon as he shifts back that he's found his mate. Can they work this out? Will a town that accepts shifters accept a gay one? Or is the judgment all in his head? How much rejection can Cannon take?

Matt's back story is heartbreaking. Bring a tissue or two.

I really liked this one, but I didn't rate it higher because of the cheating. I get how scared he was of coming out: the last time he did he got beat up and dumped on the side of the road. Coming out shouldn't be forced, so I appreciated how Cannon acted about it.

But after you tell someone you love them, literally the day after, if you then show up to the bar with someone else, let them put their hands all over you and kiss them in front of your mate who you just professed your love to, that's cheating. He tried to say well I was going to run it by them and let them know it was only for show, but that's dumber. He cheated, plain and simple. But it was never treated as him cheating, it was treated like a misunderstanding. I feel like cheating is a different level and should be treated as such and it wasn't. They had a barely earned HEA, but you do get to see them more in Wolf Boss, which follows his sister.

Matt brought a completely different tone to the Bears of Burden series—in the best way. It’s quieter, more introspective, and carries a heavier emotional weight as Matt struggles with his sense of isolation and internalized shame. His journey felt raw and real, and it was refreshing to see a story that didn’t shy away from the fear and vulnerability that can come with accepting love.

Cannon was exactly the kind of patient, grounded presence Matt needed, and their connection built in a way that felt natural and deeply earned. There’s a lot of emotional unpacking here—not just about identity, but about learning to believe that happiness is something you’re allowed to have.

The romance was tender but still had plenty of heat, and the emotional payoff hit hard. A beautiful, satisfying ending for the series that honored both Matt’s growth and the overall theme of finding your place—and your person—even when you never thought it was meant for you.

I loved the story of Matt and Cannon. Shifter books of any kind has always been one of my favorites to read about. I thought the story was well written. Don’t feel like I have to read the book before this one. Only need to if want to read good books or the other characters that were in the story.
I loved Cannon characters in the story. Matt character was making me get mad at him. Mates finding each other is another plus to read in a story. Even if one of them is in the closet and doesn’t want the town to know. Getting to know Matt and Cannon story, made for an interesting read. The pages heated up with the bear shifters Matt and Cannon. The relationship was tough as one fought the coming out.
But happy endings make for a nice read. Hope to read more from the author.

Got ARC for an honest review.

Loved it 😍

Even though me personally am still getting use to same sex couples, I enjoyed this book 📙 from this series. The story line fits so many stories that individuals have and face in today's society. In my lifetime growing up you knew and some were family members that were into same sex partners but it was not spoken about in public. When I would be ear hustling because children were seen and not heard, you heard described words such as they are funny. Females were called Dykes, males faggots or sissies. I am a lot more tolerate far better than I was but still have a great deal to learn. This book covered so much, learning to love who you are, don't sell yourself short and if someone has a problem with your choice then that's their problem!

I've kept up with the series and have continuously felt like all the books were left unfinished. This one still felt a little like that, although not as bad. I have to admit, I think out of all of them, this was my favorite. Way to Go Candace ! It had me in tears because you can really feel Cannon's pain. Matt was driving me nuts, I swear I wanted to ring his neck even though I've thought he was great in the other books. I love the M/M storyline, the sex scenes were hot and they ended up just being such a sweet couple. Who's next ? Do we get like a nice novella telling us how these couples ended up in the future ?

Determination and Love

I'm not usually one to read M/M romance but Matt has been such an engaging character in this series I couldn't resist his story. Turns out it's a great story. Bear shifters, Matt and his newly found mate, Cannon, are complete and utter masculine sexuality and wonderful guys. Their chemistry and magnetism provides a terrific feel to this book. The challenge of overcoming Matt's fears and Cannon's resulting pain is real and captivating. The resulting Grand Gesture (almost too Grand) and the support and companionship of the friends who are family, and shifters, are entertaining and loving,. Love this final book of this fun series.

A great love story and, sadly, an end to the Bears Of Burden series. This story is about Matt, a sweet man, who just happens to be gay and in the closet, finding his mate, Cannon. Matt wants true love and Cannon, but can he have both, while still maintaining his secret? I don't typically read M/M books, finding it hard to relate to, etc.. but Matt is such a sweetie, I just had to see how his story went! I would recommend this book, especially as a conclusion to the series. (I was given a free copy of this book and have willingly left a review!)

Issues

I’m usually not a fan of M/M books however this 1 was pretty good.

Matt, has issues with coming out of the closet for his mate in this book because of when he was younger & came out in front of his Dad it was a nightmare.

Cannon’s 1st meeting of his mate is right after he was shot by his sister’s ex & was almost run down by Presley in book 5. Presley took him to Matt’s clinic to get better & that’s also when Matt realizes that Cannon is his mate.

Now, the fun begins, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens in Matt & Cannon’s relationship.

I was a little undecided to read but curious to know what would happen to Matt. So I read it even though of !y believes. It was emotional, sad and the end was excellent! And now I will understand much better Carter's book. See I bought Shifter Starter book collection but I did realize that are the first book of every single series you had wrote Candace but I get it now and love it cuz I had read most of them all but not Carter's but I will now? Matt finally gets his mate! I've grown attached to the characters in this series and while seeing it end is a bit melancholy, it couldn't have ended on a better note. Matt's past has him living in shadows when Cannon comes along to muck up his orderly life, and he does it splendidly. There's lots of angst as Matt comes to terms with who he is and who he's destined to be with, but I loved every single word.

Can Matt overcome past prejudices before he looses Cannon?

Matt's assistant, Presley, brings in a bear shifter with gunshot to - who turns out to be Matt's mate. Cannon was shot protecting his sister and is happy about Matt being his mate, but Matt is afraid to come out of the closet. Will he lose Cannon before he does?

A loving story coming to terms with who and what you are as a person and the you love.

Great romance

I absolutely loved Cannon. He was kind, caring, and true romantic at heart. Matt let his fear rule him when there was nothing to really fear, and the way he treated his mate was so wrong. I wanted Cannon to find someone else because he deserved so much more , and Matt was acting so juvenile and hurtful. Matt was lucky that his cousin talked some sense into him before it was too late.

Read all 6 books

I waited until I read the entire series to leave a written review. So basically it's about what I expected. A quick fast read heats up pretty quickly not a lot of emotional depth each book creates a romance creates a little conflict wraps it up pretty quickly. Kind of like romance fast food.

Summary: cute but I probably won't remember them after a couple of days.

I really loved this book and I had been waiting for it! Matt is Burden's vet and due to his father's prejudices never believed he would a mate until the day he did. Not knowing what to do with that, he kept Cannon his dirty little secret. Or so he thought. This book shows that Fate never forgets you.

It seems very unusual for a m/f shifter romance author to write a m/m shifter romance. I want to encourage you all to branch out. This was a good book. I liked Matt in previous books and was gratified he got his own story.

I might have actually liked to see Cannon get a little less of a warm welcome from the whole town, so Matt didn't look so crazy. Otherwise, it was very satisfying.

Great way to complete the Bears of Burden series. Matt the local vet gets his HEA. Loved that the entire group at the bar helped unite this shifter with his mate. It was funny that they kept info from Georgia right till the end of the book. Matt was always one of my favourite characters and who doesn’t love a hot fireman. I read this book using my KU subscription.

Doesnt matter who you love

Because once destiny has created your mate they are your.one and only and nothing you do or say is gonna change that. Cannon has been shot and Matt's the local vet who saves his life...both are shifters...but only one needs to realize that it doesnt matter if your gay...destiny has created a mate just for him he just has to be open to him.
