My daughter found this treasure in her local charity shop and gave it to me….I've always been drawn to Amy Carmichael, her life story and her writings, learning more of her steadfast & sacrificial love and devotion to the Lord in the joys and sorrows of life and ministry. She has been a mentor to my heart and this little book is a gem, devotional thoughts she wrote for her Dohnavur Family. “She was always ready to gather what He is always ready to give, and to her there were no experiences in life to which the Bible did not open out the Way, the Truth, and the Life….no problems which are not met by the promises found therein.” I hope you might delight in this book too.

I read this book a couple pages at a time. Amy Carmichael was a remarkable woman, and there is much for me to glean from her writings. However, I say that with a couple caveats. Disappointingly, she quotes mystics at times, and along with the various Bible versions she uses, she quoted at least once from the apocrypha. I would have preferred some caveats from her if she was going to do that. However, I appreciate her emphasis on practical Christian living - including, not moping about your circumstances, but dying to self. Oh, how prominent self can be!

I've been reading this book for four years now and I can't seem to get myself to finish the last few chapters. So I decided it was time to take it off the list and off my chest. It was beautiful and I learned some good things from it, but I'm never going to read it again.

It took me months before I finally finish reading this book, because each part is so precious, and just like a sumptuous meal, I took all the time in the world to savor each of it.

Through this book, I learned and relearned a lot of perspectives about God and every aspect of a Christian's life. I mused at each enlightening insight. I embraced each comforting word. I received each humbling correction. And I can truly say this book written by Amy Carmichael has spoken to me the very insights I need to hear in this season of my life. But such insights were not solely Carmichael's words---she pointed me to meditating on and memorizing His Word and she pointed me back to Him always, in every page of my reading. The very same I would hope for the people who would read such a blessing as this book!

Many beautiful truths here. I enjoyed so many parts of this and appreciate Amy Carmichael’s ministry very much. She is a gifted writer.
There are some amazing challenges pertaining to Christian fortitude, endurance, and suffering.
I gave it 4 stars because it did seem redundant in some areas (an editing issue, I think) and found her writing “over my head” in some parts; hard to track with. I feel almost silly giving any kind of “critique” for Amy Carmichael’s writing at all, so I’m going to say it was my fault, not hers haha.
