These devotional writings, collected by David Hazard, offer readers uplifting times with God, showing them how to find safety in Him, live honestly before Him, and receive peace as they live in His presence. Amy Carmichael remained faithful to God through times of material need, physical danger, pain, debilitating illness, disappointment, and attack by friends. From this crucible she guides readers into a deeper friendship with the Father who is always trustworthy. Formerly released as You Are My Hiding Place.
Amy Wilson Carmichael was a Protestant Christian missionary in India, who opened an orphanage and founded a mission in Dohnavur. She served in India for 55 years without furlough and wrote many books about the missionary work there.
I cannot count how many times I opened this book to find it speak exactly to my spiritual need at that very time. For this alone it earns its place for me among the 'gold, silver and precious stones' of devotional literature.
Amy Carmichael is one of my heros❤️ Her love for Christ and faith through suffering is convicting, nourishing and beautiful. I admire her so much and I felt like I underlined everything in this devotional.
This book was good and applicable but I felt like her writing style was a bit archaic. I would definitely recommend many other devotionals before this one.
I'm surprised I didn't like this more, but it felt disjointed to me. Carmichael's usage of several different Bible versions was jarring. There wasn't a coherent connection between devotional thoughts. Plus the prayers at the end of each devotion were written by a different author and did not flow either.
I appreciate Carmichael's writing and life experience, but recommend you to read her booklet titled "If".
“If only the next step is clear, then the one thing to do is take it! Don’t pledge your Lord or yourself to any steps beyond what you know. You don’t see them yet.” - p. 28
“And as she walked the misted way, she was given a song to sing: ‘You, my Lord, never fail those who seek you!’” -p. 69
“...all things that happen are full of shining seed. Light is down for us—not darkness.” -p. 123
“He who begins, finishes. He who leads us on, follows behind to deal in love with our poor attempts...He gathers up the things we have dropped...And we are gathered up in between, as in great arms of lovingkindness.” -p. 150
A little devotional compiled of selections from works by Amy Carmichael. It's good; I will probably use it again at some point. Not so crazy about the additional material (prayers, mostly) by the compiler/editor, but that might just be me.
Spend 40 days with Amy Carmichael`s thoughts and see how she saw and knew the Saviour, be inspired and encouraged by her faith and by the miracles God did in her life. A real christian.
Excellent devotional. I am sure I will return to it in future years. It has definitely inspired me to read more of Amy Carmichael's books. Highly recommend.
This book has been such an encouragement to me. To see Amy and her heart for the Lover of her soul through her own suffering has been so sweet. Her words have deeply impacted my journey with the Lord this year. She’s real about suffering and she’s real about our great treasure in Christ. No matter what life brings, “Faithful is He; He will surely do it”. Her life speaks to God’s faithfulness, and I’m so grateful I found out about her through one of my TAs, Hannah R, who first showed me her booklet, If. Amy has quickly become one of my heroes in the faith, alongside Elizabeth Elliot.
I enjoyed having this daily devotional to add to my quiet time each day. It was also a great way to be introduced to Amy Carmichael and her work. I have now ordered one of her books and have a clear plan of the next several that I’ll read after. A wonderful collection that David Hazard put together and the prayers he added were a wonderful addition. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Amy Carmichael, wow what a woman of great wisdom! I was so encouraged reading this collection of writings that make this great devotional. In those moments of reading, I in fact felt that God came quietly to meet me. I grew deeper in my understanding of his presence with me even in dark times where there is a shadow cast, the sun still continues to shine behind the clouds!
Each day of this devotional renewed my soul in a different way. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit working through Amy. No matter what was happening I felt her deep connection with God in a way that was admirable while wondering will I ever get to a place where I am totally sold out like she was. I love how she used scripture to redirect her thoughts.
I'm only to page 25, but I'm blown away. What precious thoughts about God's love. I can't fathom how anyone could regret reading this book. I don't know when I'll hit the finished reading date button. This book is to be savored and not rushed through.
A beautiful collection of Any Carmichaels writings! She has such a way to help find "spiritual gold" in the scriptures and through the account of her testimony! This little book is a powerful treasure to be read again and again and savored.
This is my third time reading through this book. It has been a companion in many difficult times and an encouragement that kept reminding me of the truth of God's word. I love this little book of 40 devotionals by AC and plan to revisit it for many years to come.
I haven't gotten the chance to read much of Any Carmichael's work yet, but I remember vividly how she prayed for blue eyes instead of brown... And that God said no. And how He used her life in India.
Such a wonderful little book! I will definitely be revisiting it again and again over the years for encouragement and guidance in my faith in Jesus Christ.
This is a beautiful arrangement of Amy Carmichael devotional readings by David Hazard. Inspiring, encouraging, challenging and good! A favourite devotional book!
I will treasure this book ever so close to my heart. This book has brought me closer to God. There are many passages which I have re-read multiple times for the truth to sink into my heart.
Although this book is not an autobiography of Amy Carmichael, it does portray glimpses of her gruelling tasks, heart-breaks and toils as a missionary in India. Some chapters are carved with depths of her loneliness and anguish. And as any wounded child would look to his/her parents for consolation, Amy Carmichael looks to her Father, the source of the Living Water.
One cannot get enough of this book, if one truly opens up their heart to hear God's voice in between these pages. It provides spiritual manna on acceptance, God's will, being self-sacrificial, courage to face giants, seeing God as Refiner in our circumstantial discomforts and much more.
Amy Carmichael is a profound writer and a disciple of Jesus Christ.
