What if Sherlock Holmes had turned to crime instead of detection? THE CRIMINAL MASTERMIND OF BAKER STREET by Rob Nunn investigates this very concept. Holmes famously said that “when a clever man turns his brains to crime it is the worst of all.” A sinister influence is at work in Victorian London with Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson running a hidden criminal empire. Sherlock Holmes, in my story, strives to elevate crime to a gentlemanly fashion, while Moriarty continues as he did in the original stories. So both men exist and are involved in similar endeavors, but go about it in different fashions. This will ultimately lead them to a conflict between their two organizations.(less)

What haven’t they done to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson? Over the years, print authors and scriptwriters have tinkered with the pair by having them living in current times, have them use contemporary technology and investigative techniques, or change the gender mostly of Watson but sometimes Sherlock as well. Occasionally such creators have Sherlock turned into a criminal including becoming Jack the Ripper or even Professor James Moriarty.

The latter device is what Rob Nunn explores in The Crimi

Loved this book even without being a previous SH fan (outside of the BBC series). Sherlock and Watson are so well-written and you easily find yourself rooting for these anti-heroes. The author's thorough research is evident, and I imagine fans of Holmes will find Easter eggs throughout! A great read.

Move over Moriarty—You've met your match!
A fine, adventurous faux-upside-down-biography of Sherlock Holmes.

When I heard of this new novel by Rob Nunn, I was excited. When I received an advance copy in the mail, I was thrilled. When I read in the introduction that the author used William Baring-Goulds’s chronology as the basis of his reimagined saga, the first thing I did was pull down my Baring Gould’s “biography” of the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes on Baker Street and also his ground-breakin

My thanks go out to Steve and Timi at MX Publishing for my copy of this book. Undershaw forever!

Holmes as the spider at the center of the web…

Let us suppose that Holmes was not the consulting detective of the canon and bitter enemy to Professor Moriarty. Picture him instead as a “consulting criminal,” head of a vast criminal empire spreading its wings over London, Britain, and creeping into the rest of the world. Moriarty is a rival, trying to push Holmes out as “the Napoleon of Crime.”

While I felt like several of the shortened and largely unchanged versions of Doyle's short stories could have been treated more creatively and twisted a little more, overall I though this book was great! Writing a whole altered history of Sherlock Holmes is an awesome idea and a daunting task, and Nunn manages to do that while striking a delicate balance between retaining Sherlock's original character traits and making him a criminal mastermind. I also enjoyed the new adventures! One other thing ...more

Reads like a Cliffs Notes versions of his mysteries, really. Some descriptions of his goings-on with a few of his "crimes" but it's all pretty tame. Not nearly as groundbreaking as Grendel - as an example - but that's a big set of shoes to use for comparison.

I had somehow stumbled upon this book on Goodreads, perhaps while looking over some of the other Holmes pastiche works that I have been wanting to read. [Confession - Pastiche is a new word I learnt recently, and am having fun using it :D]. There was a preview available, and it aroused my curiosity and interest. This had been on my wishlist since then, but has always been hard to find, or quite expensive. A few months ago I got a kindle, and recently got a ebook of this one, allowing me to delve ...more
