here's volume 5 of the 1945 series, and the last volume of the "main series" before we start reaching "season two". ANYWAYS, LET'S BEGIN.

first, is there a bad ending here? answer: NOOOOOOOOO

wait, don't start celebrating yet. i hope you like your sad stories because you def gonna get it here, especially in the 2nd part of the story when you start reading about the uke's (chitose) past. ANYWHO.

21 year old niigaki kazui's dream is to well. not die first of all. that's important. live a comfortable life, make money, and have a respectable position in life. LIKE EVERYONE. perfectly normal. he's the son of a poor mat maker and he's the 7th child of 8 children. not wanting to continue living life in poverty, he sought out to make DEM GOOD MONEY that was both easy and feasible for someone that didn't even properly attend primary school. and what other choice did he have other than to become a soldier? he originally wanted to join the army but saw that the navy was recruiting people to join the flying corps. lured by how easy it was to gain rank in the navy versus the army, he immediately joined. the training was hard, but the prospect of $$$$ helped him from getting washed out from flight training hell. he graduated with average grades and was stationed in atsugi base (same as mikami in vol 4, ahurhur) for half a year until he was asked to transfer to rabaul. he really wanted to stay in japan, but because he knew rabaul = promotions up the aaaass, he was like hells yeah.

to the pacific islands he goes, but too bad for him because he finds out that there weren't any type 97 carrier attack (torpedo) bombers (B5N/Kate) for him to ride as an observer and was therefore told he didn't have to fight until they could secure another plane for him. sure, he was happy that he didn't have to be in the front lines, but that defeated the purpose of him coming to rabaul in the first place. he wanted to fight so he can get dem promotions and then make dem mooonies so he can get the fuk out of the pacific asap. as he helps pick out fruits and vegetables from the fields, his hopes and dream of the good life starts fading away until the captain calls out for him. kazui is then asked to fly the 2-seater type 99 carrier based dive bomber (THE standard dive bomber of the IJN; val to the americans, was supposed to be replaced by suisei in 1943 but that obviously didn't happen) on the aircraft carrier, shoukaku, as an observer for a certain 2nd lieutenant pilot. what a dive bomber does is dive straight down to the enemy's ship and attack by dropping bombs into the enemy ship's deck just as it gets low enough while being protected by their escort - the fighter (generally the zero) planes around them. kazui actually wanted to continue riding the carrier attack planes because he's used to it, but the impeding fear of not having the opportunity to fly anything convinces him to abide with the captain's wishes.

he'll be paired up with a superior, which means he can use that connection to his advantage to climb up the ranks. go ahead boi, do yo thang. the captain introduces him to the 20 year old 2nd lit. takai chitose, who is at the moment throwing up and shaking in fright after returning back from the air battle. kazui is immediately turned off by this because he's entrusting his life to this person. he convinces himself to give this person a chance since he'll get his sweet reward of a promotion in the future...... until he hears that chitose also gets carsick and cannot deal with being in vehicles in general. the image of flying behind a pilot throwing up mid-flight during a battle seriously = death. kazui thinks of ways to get himself out of this mess like punching chitose, a superior, in the face and getting kicked out of flying the dive bomber.

the thing about chitose is that he's a talented pilot with top marks that just happens to be afraid of flying. he's able to get the job done, despite giving kazui several near death experiences in the process. one day, kazui finds that chitose is w... well, you'll find out.

it's not like chitose becomes scared when he flies because he wants to for the shits and giggles. he has a phobia of heights so he can't help the way he reacts when he's up in the air. but it's also because he doesn't want to die that he'll do whatever he can to return back home. you'll find out that chitose is missing the point of what a "true pair" is, which is emphasized over and over again in this entire series. no one takes the blame in the other's death. together they live, and together they die.

chitose has trust issues, which makes sense after learning of his past.

chitose may SEEM weak, but you'll learn how strong chitose really is. he deals with a lot of shit throughout this story, and he made me sooooo frickin' proud of him in the end. i related a lot to kazui in this book because hey, i wanna live the good life too.

in summary: chitose is precious and needs to be protected.

overall, the story was pretty good. i didn't except it to be so angsty and depressing, so watch out for that. the gekkou pair from vol 2 makes a comeback here, and chitose and wataru become friends (the comi SS that came with this... <333)

anyways, a must read especially if you've already read the past 4 volumes. read and possibly weep?

see you next volume...

hey yo, if you're wondering why this doujin gots the same title as vol 5 of the 1945 series, that's because.... well, it's the same thing. the doujin came out back in 2013 and served as a side story to vol 2. then 3-ish years later it got revamped into novel format.

Q: UH OK, SO... THE CONTENTS ARE THE SAME AS THE NOVEL?

A: pretty much. i mean obviously the novel itself is gonna have more dialogue/monologue cuz it's longer but the story is the same. the doujin is divided into 3 parts: the main story (same as the novel), an extra story not in the novel that's a convo between kazui wanting to know the knooow b/w rokurou's uh, "bed life" LOL (this was a fun chapter), and the last story is chitose talkin' to his dumbfuck father after his return from war (same as novel). ONLY THING MISSING from this doujin that's in the novel IS chitose's past story. i wasn't looking forward to reading that AGAIN cuz uh yeah, that was a super depressing chapter, so. woot. don't have to relive that moment again. thank god.

Q: OK, IF I ALREADY READ THE NOVEL, DO I NEED TO READ THE DOUJIN?

A: uuuum. if you want to read something completely new then obviously this ain't gonna be your cup of tea. BUT. plumeria is the type of story that you can read over and over and over without EVER getting tired of it. so reading this doujin shouldn't even be anything to cry about. and if you ever wanted to re-read the novel without actually re-reading the novel, this doujin is just perfect for that. not having to read about chitose past again should be more of a reason to read this doujin.

Q: OK WELL YOU RATED THIS AS A 5/5 BUT THE NOVEL A 4/5. WHY THE DIFFERENCE?

A: the first time i read plumeria, i thought the romantic development between kazui and chitose felt hella rushed like hello? but reading this for the 2nd time made me... see things differently... you know how when you read a book for the 2nd time you notice the lil things and learn something new at the same time? i dunno, i just... somehow i thought their progression felt more natural for me the 2nd time around. which in turn made me that much more invested in their relationship. i feel like kazui and chitose are under-rated compared to the other 1945 pairs and it's... sad because they are a beautifuuuul pair.

OH. AND THAT EXTRA STORY WITH KAZUI AND ROKUROU. i need more of this with the fellas. like fuck with the bs, stop beating around the bush, and ask each other about their sex life. c'mon boys, you can do it.

OH OH. AND YEAH. NO DEPRESSING ASF CHITOSE PAST STORY. LOVE YOU CHITOSE, BUT I DUN WANNA READ ABOUT YOUR SAD PAST TWICE. NOOOPE.

so yeah. if you're a fan of the 1945 series, this is a must have regardless if you read the novel or not.
