A must-read for all muslims!
It's a light read with heavy messages that directly gives you a pang of awareness as a muslim in this modern world.
Also a great book to discuss with your circle of muslim friends.

It is essential to remind ourselves of what being a Muslim entails. The author did a great job in regards to that with his carefully selected ten lessons. Specifically, I liked his lessons on patience and gratitude, as their importance is often forgotten in our fast-moving world.

All Muslims, wherever they are in their journey, should read this great book to remind or introduce themselves to a proper Muslim mindset.

Seriously one of the most motivating book I have read in a while! Can’t believe I just randomly stumbled upon this gem on Amazon, every Muslim in this generation should read it! The practical lessons are so real and do-able, it’s written in a way that you relate to so much of it. I can’t scream high enough of how good this is! I love the last chapter/ lesson. It’s so motivation without being to pushy, if you know what I mean. It’s not the “I used to live in a shoebox and now I am multi millionaire” kinda thing, it’s just beautiful and realistic.

A selection of my favorite passages

·       Fortunate are the ones who don’t ever have to live a moment without knowing who Allah is.

·       In order to have a positive mindset according to psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck, we must believe that our ability to change and improve is malleable, that it is not fixed, and that, if we want to, we can change at any moment in our lives through effort, training and practice.

·       Eman is the action of the heart, meaning to affirm faith and belief in Allah in your heart. Then it is to affirm it with your tongue, and to follow it with action of the limbs.

·       seeking knowledge is one of the best actions we can take to draw nearer to Allah, and strengthen our eman.

·       Perform all the obligatory acts (fard & wajib) to the best of your ability, which are mainly the action of the limbs.

·       Sins decrease barakah in our day- to- day lives, and this can also affect our attitude, our emotions, our views of ourselves, and the world.

·       The gift for the believer is death, because it is what stands between him and Allah, and it is only after his death that he will meet Allah.

·       Set up a time daily for solitude with Allah. It can be a few minutes to an hour. Sit in a quiet place, preferably in your prayer room where you are completely alone with Allah, without any noise or distractions. Use this alone time to think about your life, your purpose, and the difficulties you are facing, if any.

·       Use this alone time with Allah to cry to Him for guidance, forgiveness, and mercy. Use this time to seek clarity and blessings in every aspect of your life.

·       I believe life is an accumulation of the choices we make. This time of solitude with Allah is perfect for reflecting about the choices we have made and the patterns we have carved out that we have been stuck in for so long. It is time to break out of this perpetual cycle of negativity and stagnancy and seriously focus on how we choose to spend the rest of our days on this earth.

·       We must humble ourselves by acknowledging that our parents have rights over us, and that those rights must be fulfilled. We have a responsibility towards our parents, which means that no matter what the circumstances are, we must always fulfill and uphold their rights upon us. It is a commandment of Allah.

·       Good company also consists of those who love each other for the sake of Allah without a hidden agenda.

·       The process alone of asking for forgiveness, be it from one’s self, Allah, or other people, requires us to humble ourselves. However, it is most difficult when you ask others for forgiveness.

·       It is one of our core beliefs to accept all of the situations, past or present, in our lives that we cannot do anything about. So, endure patiently, live meaningfully, and remember that Allah is ever aware of your situation.

·       Some stress can actually be good for you. It is called eustress. Good stress can help you become stronger, perform better, and get tasks done faster. It can be motivating and exciting at the same time. This is provided that eustress comes in small doses, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.

·       Try to avoid having too many tasks that are urgent,

·       Allah has created the human being in the best shape and form with the best of features.  Allah has given the human being intelligence and abilities not shared by any other creature. We are ashraful makhluqat, the noblest, highest, and best of the creations.

·       Allah said in the Quran, in chapter 17:70, “And indeed, We have honored the children of Adam, and carried them upon the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of the creation, with a marked preference.”

·       Do it on purpose. Whatever it is that we decide to do, we must do it because we want to, not because during the course of the day, time just ran out, and that's how things just happened to be.

·       It is unnatural to the Muslim to find complete peace and tranquility in anything other than in nearness to Allah.

·       We need to slow down. We must stop and appreciate the fleeting gifts of life, time, good health, relationships, and the desire for knowledge, all of which are given to us for free. Were these gifts to be taken away, they could not be acquired through wealth.

·       Abu Hurayrah, Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him said, “Richness is not in the abundance of wealth, rather it is self- sufficiency.”

·       Ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Envy is permitted only in two cases: a man whom Allah gives wealth, and he disposes of it rightfully, and a man to whom Allah gives knowledge, which he applies and teaches.”

·       In Islam, patience is divided into three categories: sabr with sins, sabr with facing difficulties, and sabr with obedience to Allah.

·       Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “Never is a believer stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a sadness, a grief, or worry, or harm, or even the pricking of a thorn but that Allah will expiate his sins on account of his patience.”

·       Parkinson’s Law, which states that work expands to fill the time allotted for it. So don’t set a deadline of six months when you know that it can be done in three months nor should you set a deadline for a week when you know that it can be done in one day.

Muslim Mindset

A very informative book.
I liked especially the break-down into topics.
The summary at the end of each topic was a good review of the main points.
The explanation of words at the end was also very
helpful; and the chapter summary at the end provided an additional review of the main points in each chapter.
I truly enjoyed reading this text and, as a new Muslim and someone who doesn't speak Arabic, found it easy to grasp

Wonderful

One of the very few ‘self help’ booms I found non-repetitive and insightful in every chapter. Truly a gem.
For Muslims in the west especially, trying to find the balance between living well in the world and finding peace in the hereafter.

The Muslim Mindset by Zakia Khalil is a self-help book that aims to help Muslims develop a positive mental attitude revolving around complete trust, faith and devotion to Allah swt. I have devoured all kinds of self-help books, podcasts and news articles so I can say that I pretty much know already what was written there. But, the question is, am I putting it into practice? That's the most difficult thing. The Muslim mindset must be incorporated in the daily life of a Muslim and must be practiced intentionally. May Allah help us achieve this, ameen.

Positive Advice

As someone who has not studied Islam this was an engaging and accessible overview of achieving more positivity in life. The chapters range from practical advice around lifestyle to esoteric concepts I've not encountered before. A thought provoking book.

Inspiring

Before reading this book i became stagnant in my faith and needed some form of guidance. Now having read the book, I now understand what was missing. Zakia gives you an extremely detailed guide on how to channel your energy into your faith by roaming our daily aspects of life. It is an easy read and I found it hard to put down. Highly recommend!

We read this for masjid book club. We were looking for an easy read after Ramadan that might consolidate everything we learned and practiced in the holy month.

This book was more like a khutbah than a book. A lot of the feedback from our club which is mostly made up of mature women with jobs and kids, was that the author is very immature and young given a lot of her perspective on things. Imagine our surprise when we found out she was not that old. Maybe she wrote the book when she was younger?

The advice is vague and there’s nothing wrong with anything she says. But most of all, the biggest problem we had with the book was that it doesn’t really define what a Muslim mindset is. We had a great discussion coming up with our own definitions. Overall i would not recommend this book though. But as she is a fellow Muslim, I pray Allah continues to grant her good in this life and the next. As a read though, this just fell short for me.
