Ever since Soren was kidnapped and taken to the St. Aegolius School for Orphaned Owls, he has longed to see his sister, Eglantine, again. Now Eglantine is back in Soren's life, but she's been through an ordeal too terrible for words. And Ezylryb, Soren's mentor, has disappeared. Deep within Soren's gizzard, something more powerful than knowledge tells him there's a connection between these mysterious events.

In order to rescue Ezylryb, Soren must embark upon a perilous quest. It will bring him face-to-face with a force more dangerous than anything the rulers of St. Aggie's could have devised-and a truth that threatens to destroy the owl kingdom.

With every book I read, I become a bigger fan of Kathryn Lasky and/or Ga'Hoole. Even though the movie is so different, it was my first introduction to Ga'Hoole and the Legends of the Great Tree and the Guardians who reside there. The books had been on my to-read list for a long time, but because they were older, had constantly been pushed down the reading list. But now I am completely hooked and look forward to each new adventure as I finish the previous book.

In this third installment we return to Soren, a Tyto, barn own, and his band of friends who go on a rescue mission searching out their beloved teacher Ezylryb. Ezylryb had gone missing while searching for information about a new villain on the horizon, Metal Beak. The history and legends of Ga'Hoole is a long and intricate tale. They are stories what will challenge your spirit and make you think you can be better than you currently are. They are stories as truth that will help you see the world in a new way. Lasky is a master story teller and these books are masterpieces each unto themselves and as a greater whole. So come join Soren, Gylfie, Digger, Twilight and Otulissa as they embark on yet another heroic adventure.

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series really takes off with book 3. There's action, adventure and character development all rolled into one. And can I just say, it's got Snowy Owls! I heart snowy owls.

Now onto my major problem and why this warrents a three star rating and not a four or five. Repetition. Lasky tends to over describe things to the point that I thought I was going crazy because I swear I just read a description that was worded exactly the same way four pages ago.

While I understand that yes this book is intened for younger audiences there is no need to describe in detail the same exact thing time and time again.

So you want examples? Here goes. The chaws, a reader is told at least eight time throughout the book the exact definition of a chaw, who is in what chaw, and what they did. Readers need only one reminding. I mean after all this is a 200 page book!

Another example, the flecks and Soren's past. These are all constantly repeated to the point of boredom.

Yes there needs to be a little trip down memory lane especially in children's books but if you start repeating information IN THE SAME BOOK you gotta stop and ask yourself if there's a problem.

Besides this little end rant, I liked the book just found this little part annoying.

The Rescue is more of the same--some more secrets are revealed, the plot slowly progresses, and jarringly enough, the prejudice fail gets worse.

Mrs. Plithiver was a terribly offensive and tragic character in the first two books. In the Ga'Hoole world, blind snakes are kidnapped and enslaved by their white owl "masters" (Lasky's word, not mine). They rant about how most birds are disgusting, worthless, and ignorant creatures while they blindly revere whites owls.

Now, Octavia the Kielian snake has arrived to one-up her. Octavia wasn't kidnapped to be a thinly-veiled mammy character, she was kidnapped to be a child soldier. By the protagonist's mentor. Who is a war hero turned pacifist and revered by all the other characters. And this enslavement is never implied to be anything but acceptable. Ezylryb literally buys Octavia from her parents, and no one thinks there's anything wrong with this!

So why is it, then, that St. Aggie's is the root of all evil for cultivating child soldiers, while the protagonists are heroic and noble when they do the same damn things to the snakes!?

But don't worry, because it gets even more hypocritical than that with the arrival of the Big Bad of the series, Nyra and Metal Beak's "Pure Ones". The Pure Ones believe that Tyto owls are superior to all species, and that Tyto Alba owls are superior to even other Tytos. Obviously, the Pure Ones are evil, evil monsters.

Wait, wait, wait. Everybody back up a second. Why is it that when the protagonists discriminate against other species, it's just part of being an owl, but when the Pure Ones discriminate between owl species, it's reprehensible and must be stopped at all costs? What the hell is happening here?

I just don't get this series. The bare bones of the idea (anthropomorphic owl civilization, like a bird version of Warrior Cats) isn't bad, but the actual plot is an exercise in hypocrisy. There's nothing wrong with the idea of a group of owls fighting thinly-veiled owl Nazis. But there's definitely a lot wrong with a group of owls fighting prejudice... all while engaging in it.

I'm almost inclined to take this as a straight-up WW2 allegory, with the Pure Ones being Nazis, St. Aggie's being communists, the Guardians being the Allies, and the snakes being Pre-Civil Rights Movement blacks. It's not a particularly good justification for the hypocritical prejudices of the main characters, but at least it's a little more clever and deep than the characters just being assholes.

Unfortunately, all traces of any such allegory are gone before the series is even half over, so... Nope. Still fail.

I really like this book series, it clearly shows that the author put a lot of emotion into this series. Soren's ryb or teacher named Ezylryb went missing and Soren wants to find him. He flies out with his chaw or group in search for clues about Ezylryb's whereabouts. The chaw gets some information and flies to a castle. In the castle, the chaw learns about something called flecks, and that they can be used to mess around with any creatures brain. They get burning coals from a nearby forest fire and look for the flecks. The chaw finds 3 bags and burns them all destroying the flecks power. In the process they find Ezylryb who was lost because of the flecks. Now that the flecks were burnt, Ezylryb was back to normal. Soon after they find Ezylryb, a group of 10 owls come, one with a metal mask. Soren's chaw and the other 10 owls fight, with Soren and the chaw ending with a victory. In the battle, Soren and the chaw used the coal the their advantage and burned the other 10 owls. Soren melted half of the owl with a metal mask and it turned out to be his evil brother, Kludd! Kludd and his group retreated and Soren's chaw flew back to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. Everyone celebrated the victory of Soren and Ezylryb's appearance. Then the book ends.

This was the first book of the series I read as a child so it holds a special place in my heart because of that. Even so, the plot is very fast paced and full of action. Soren has to deal with the aftermath of what his sister went through, and also aid in the rescue of his favorite teacher. Definitely keep reading!

Oooh yeah. After the more expository second volume, we're back into action. Soren and his band really coalesce, as they embark on two exciting missions. We find out what 'You only wish' was all about (hint: something to do with Metal Beak). This is a fun series that touches on deep and dark themes, and the kids I know who have read these books love them. One caveat: they're only for series freaks. Despite some cursory stabs at backstory, Lasky mostly charges into each episode and I don't think any after number one would really stand alone.

An entertaining series up to this point, for sure, but the latter half (approximately) of this installment really ups the ante in excitement and intrigue. I thought maybe 4*, since the first part of the book didn't neccesarilly show its promise, but I've been reading so many awful, awful books lately that I'm just too excited for actually having found one I thought was good!

On a more critical sidenote, I'm not a fan of how the reader is reminded several times every book about flecks, chaws (who's in them, what position certain owls fly and the chaw's function), owls having to take every class subject regardless of chaw assignment, and that sea gulls are considered gross even though everyone seems to love their jokes (albeit often secretly). I can even let all that slide, being a kid's book, but most egregious in my mind is how POV's often switch in the very same paragraph. No problem with differing POV's, not one problem, at all; I'd just appreciate it incorporated in a way that doesn't give me whiplash when it does happen.

I love the premise of this series. But I just finished book 3 and ranted to my family for 30 minutes. The repetitive sections of backstory were my first hint that the delivery of this great story was going downhill. How many times do we need to be reminded of Soren's experience with flecks? Or that Digger prefers to walk? Or any other characteristic that we already read about? Not this many. That's for sure.

I have grown so tired of every character's perfection. Mrs. P was a perfect musician in book 2. Digger a perfect tracker. Soren perfect at hearing and various other skills. Every time there's a problem it's really not a problem because someone is perfect. Even Eglantine's amnesia is solved to perfection. There's no real danger.

And let me talk about the flecks for a second. Book one revealed to the reader that they're magnetic when the armored owl was pulled into them. Book two had Soren et al going to school with the requirement they all attend every class at the most revered, special owl place in owl history, where great knights live to protect owl-kind. And they even talk about the flecks being magnetic. Yet Soren never talks to any adults about the flecks to understand magnetism, nor does Gylfie with all her studying and knowledge. But near the end of book 3 suddenly Otulissa, whose entire role has been to annoy Soren with her snobbishness and talking, she suddenly pipes up that, "It's simple." She explains the magnetism and Soren's brain explodes with this new knowledge. I almost threw the book.

I hated this book. I still love the story premise and the world (1st ⭐). I love the characters and Soren because I'm a sucker for a hero (2nd ⭐). But I despise this book. Soren's team fear being found out for running off the first time, but when they are - gasp! Will there be a problem? - no, they weren't really found out and they just had to do extra chores. The second time they run off, this time after stealing from the armory - for no reason because they ditch the claws later - they return to a peaceful day's sleep as though they had no reason for concern of any consequences. There's not even a talk with the owl leaders about how they saved the greatest ryb or encountered Metal Beak. Nope. Just a short on time, quick, end the book, and everyone go to bed.

But my biggest peeve. My biggest oh my hoolies I hate this book moment. Was after Kludd flies off and Soren is wrapping his featherbrain around the idea that his known-to-be-evil and a baby owl killer of a brother is the notorious Metal Beak. Despite the fact he knew what a bastard his brother was, "it's all too horrific to dwell on," so he thinks about... Gylfie, her perfection with words, and what Gylfie thinks of her own parents. What the Hooliebajoolies?!!! Left field much, Soren? "My evil bro is the villain we've been scared of, but, hey, do you think your parents are dead?" WTH.

Honestly, I think the author is soft. I think she thinks kids are idiots who need constant reminders for everything they already read. I think she thinks kids can't handle her owls having flaws or problems they have to work to solve. I think the author put the snakes in as nursery blankets to reassure kids that everything will be cosy and breakfast served in teacups. Even Ezylryb biting off his own toe is there to soften the fear and horror that she thinks kids would have if he'd lost it in a battle. And because it's kid owls adventuring in a consequence-free world, Soren never relies on the great Ga'Hoole knights he's so fond of, and that makes no sense at all.

This series is on a fast track to becoming a favourite, it has somehow ignited a keen interest in Owls that I find myself exploring every chance I get. Soren is finding his Talons in the word of Ga'Hoole and making connections that will help defeat the evil that lurks in the shadows. Seeing him become a fully fledged owl is so exciting and the adventures just keep coming I am so excited to continue to dive into this world.

Have you ever been worried about a great teacher and friend? Or maybe knew that they were in trouble and wanted to help them?

In "The Rescue" by Kathryn Lasky, Soren and his band of friends must go on a mission to save Soren's chaw teacher, Ezylryb. But there is a dark secret to Ezylryb's disappearance. Will Soren and his friends be able to save Ezylryb? And what dark secret will they find? Find out in the amazing third book of Kathryn Lasky's series The Guardians of Ga'Hoole. "With that Sorne swept from the Great Hollow but the entire time until the moss curtains parted, he felt the eyeless gaze of Octavia boring into him. Outside, the night seemed tinged with red. The moon, still newing, was just a sliver slipping over over the horizon. In the light of the comet it looked like a battle claw dipped in blood." I love this book and I think it will be one of the few books that I will reread within a short time of reading it for the first time.

Ezylryb hilang!!

My rating :
Star : 3/5

Good grief. I think this series is doing the opposite of improving. It's just silly now.
And the inconsistencies are fairly frequent and extremely visible.

For example, didn't Ezylryb or whatever his name is scare the heck out of you Soren? What's all this business about 'he was such a great teacher, I'm going to miss him so much????'

And that plot twist is either unfinished or impossible. Because that literally cannot be true.

Anyway.....

More exciting than the 2nd book. I like Soren's friends becoming their own chaw. Everyone develops their own strengths and talents and contribute to the group.

Likes:
* Barn owl Soren's point of view
* First chapter is a summary of the story so far
* Cast of Characters listed at the end of the book, a great reference
* Owl information ~ digestion, nesting habits, etc.
* Feel it in my gizzard
* Mrs. P the blind nest maid snake was a decent parental authority (imo usually the adults in children's books are either cruel or incompetent)
* Friendship
* Family
* Loyalty
* Gylfie the spunky elf owl
* Large gray owl, Twilight ~ tough and defensive, but strong and courageous
* Digger, ground/burrowing owl
* Tiny Martin & Ruby from weather chaw

Dislikes:
* Ezylryb, Soren's mentor has disappeared and has been missing for several months
* Disobeying rules for the greater good
* Grownups not taking young owls ideas seriously
* Glossary of owl terms would've been very helpful
* Yarping up pellets
* Rat drops ~ owl swearing
* Wet poopers ~ other birds who chew and don't use gizzard
* Going yeep - crazy

With-reservations:
bullying, violence, death, kidnapping, ghosts

At this point in the series, Soren and his friends are finally stepping into their own and taking off on their own to discover the mystery of Metal Beak and rescue Ezylrib. I enjoyed this book because, unlike the previous one, the youngsters are taking matters into their own hands, and Soren steps up to the plate as a leader. We also see him wrestling with finally facing the death of his parents and with what happened to Eglantine. There's so many different angles of this book and this world that we discover, like Ezylrib's past, the purpose of the Flecks, and a hint of Kludd's involvement in the very heart of evil.

Also, I'm hoping in the next book that the author uses Ezylrib's experience of being betrayed by his own brother to help Soren navigate this betrayal by Kludd. It would also be great to know how the heck Kludd ended up as Metal Beak when he's barely over a year old!

The rescue was the best of the books so far. It is well conceived in it's focus and direction and allows for the main characters to have a thorough, interesting adventure, along with several supporting characters, while providing additional backstory and lore. My only gripe continues  to be some of the songs/chants. At the end, Twilight actually intimidates/scares a group of bloodthirsty owls by calling them big fat hens. So there's that. But otherwise, quite good. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I really liked this book and this series! I thought that it was very suspenseful when Soren's brother, Kludd, ended up being the most feared owl in Ga'Hoole. Who would have thought of that ending to such a sweet and graceful book? I am planning to read the 4th and final book so YAY!
