A demon seeking redemption, Silex has kept vigil over Edinburgh for countless years atop a local church as a gargoyle. With the help of his human assistant Craig, Silex solves the mysteries of the city below. But now a mystery lurks inside the church in the form of a young woman seeking sanctuary.
The panicking girl raises Silex's suspicions. Craig has a more welcoming spirit―but he lacks his gargoyle mentor's centuries of experience. When they discover the young woman's connection to new threats menacing Edinburgh, will any of them be prepared for the danger that comes next?
The story unfolds against the moody backdrop of Scotland in the 1930s, and feature infamous grave robbers Burke and Hare who return in this work of dark fantasy.
Adam Stemple is an award-winning author, poet, and musician.
Like most authors, his life experience is broad and odd. He spent twenty years on the road with a variety of bands playing for crowds of between 2 and 20,000 people. He started, ran, and sold a poker training site with poker pro, Chris "Fox" Wallace. He worked in a warehouse. He picked corn. He traded options and demoed houses. He drove pizzas for nine months in 1986, which for twenty-seven years was the longest he'd ever been employed. He drank too much and has now been sober for over fifteen years. He published his first book at the age of sixteen, "The Lullaby Songbook," which he arranged the music for. His mother is a famous children's book author. His children are artistic. His wife is a better person than him in nearly all regards.
Dark broody art adds beautifully to this story about a gargoyle and his human assistant, Craig. In the second title they are trying to solve the mystery of a young girl who comes to the church claiming "sanctuary"--a concept from another time. Even though I read this one first, I really had no trouble following along. Good story.
Craig is working for Silex, The Stone Man, a gargoyle detective whose office is on the top of an Edinburgh church. They have dead folks roaming the streets and a lass claiming sanctuary. And on top of that, there is a new priest for the church. Silex and Craig need to figure out what is happening and why before disaster strikes! A nice, spooky, supernatural mystery in comic form.
Very strange. A demon gargoyle has an apprentice go out about town and helps him solve mysteries. It was pretty dark and creepy, picture and story-wise. Don't plan on reading anymore in this series.
