This Eyewitness book gives an overview of criminals and the people who investigate their crimes. The book's primary focus is on the UK and US; although a few other countries are also mentioned. Each two page spread is dedicated to a topic such as "theft and burglary," "crime scene," "following a scent" and more. An introductory paragraph in large font is accompanied by a number of photos and drawings with captions. The back matter includes a page of amazing facts, a page of questions and answers, a timeline, useful websites, glossary, and index. Unfortunately, the people in the double-page spread of mug shots are not identified. A decent introduction that will leave interested young people wanting to read more on the topics.

For anyone interested in pursuing a career in solving crime, this book would be really helpful. I've thought about being a criminal investigator before, and this book helped me realize that it could be an option for me later in life. This publication first tells you about the history behind our laws today, and how different cultures and religions have contributed to the rules we have today. As well, it shows people who have defied these laws and have or haven't lived to regret it. I learned a lot about how punishments for crimes have changed throughout the years. If I ever wanted to commit a crime like stealing or murder, this book would be really help! Just kidding, I'm not planning on killing anybody anytime soon. This book goes over basically every possible crime, how they did it and how those specific criminals got caught. Also, this book talks about famous detectives, whether real or just in books, and how they came to be as well-known as they are. Altogether, this book is an interesting nonfiction work that would be thought-provoking to anyone thinking about or already are involved with police/ detective work, or even anyone who is curious about any sort of crime in general.

traits: Organization - This book is laid out historically and by both crime and prevention. The text always has pictures accompanying the topic and multiple reading levels which keeps students from reaching that frustration level of reading.

I picked this series because it was and particularly this book because they were popular with many of my students. Although the reading levels is a bit above their heads, the subject matter and pictures compels students. The book focusses on crime strategies, items and in response police items, tactics in response. It is a great organized book that has some chunks of reading for multiple levels. This whole series is a great resources for students if they need to research.

OK I know these are supposed to be kid books but they are awesome! Great pictures and just enough text to make you want to learn more. Great choices for a beginning history reader or to start an older reader out in a new area. Every time I pick one of these up and read it I learn new things. Highly Recommended

if you have kids, teach kids, or have any influence in the local library this DK Eyewitness series is a must. it is easy to use, broken into kid size bites, and has very cool pictures. a perfect home reference collection for any household with children!

The use of pictures in this book is a nice break from the text. These type of books could be nice in a classroom library because they can be easily understood and enjoyed.
