While Debbie Herbert isn't a new writer, she's certainly a new writer in the Intrigue line, and if this book is any indication, a welcome addition! Herbert gives exactly what I look for in these books - a romance with believable complications, simmering suspense, and a complex plot! And how refreshing to get an Intrigue book not set in Texas or Colorado! The plot has Lilah Tedder returning to her hometown after the murder of her father. Not much later, her sister is killed as well! Weaved into ...more

I truly enjoy Debbie Herbert's books. Her characters are very realistic, her descriptions of the local area are spot on and the story moves at a quick pace.

Lilah Tedder is the daughter of the local moonshiner. She returns to Lavender Mountain after her father's murder, only to be dragged into the mystery surrounding his death. After finding a large sum of money and some cheap costume jewelry underneath the mattress in his cabin, several attempts are made on Lilah's life.

Add in the fact that the

Second Chance Romance with a healthy dose of Suspense to keep you on your toes! Lilah is a girl from the "wrong" side of the tracks who is trying hard to escape her past and her family's reputation. Harlan is the career-driven police officer who fell for her. Unfortunately, he chose career over romance and the two fizzled out...badly. They are forced to come together when they discover that Lilah's father may have been dabbling in something dangerous. Now in order to save herself and her loved ...more

Yes she still wants him but he is more interested in his ambition and being associated with her will damage that. However when the killer now targets Lilah he becomes her protector. Can they uncover the family secrets before they end up paying the price?

Liked the setting and thought the mystery was good. Wanted the hero to grovel a whole lot more and the heroine had a couple of moments where she definitely could have been smarter. I also found it a bit out of touch that the illegal drugs mentioned in the story predominantly centered around marijuana with a couple references to cocaine. In 2018, marijuana is still the illegal drug boogeyman? In a romantic suspense? Set in northern Georgia? Really? Not one mention of heroin or fentanyl anywhere - ...more

I love this story. Its about old prejudices and new. Lilah Tedder is from a family of secrets whose family business is moonshine. Harlan Sampson is a deputy because of that any association with someone whose papa does moonshine could kill any chances to become sheriff. Hence the problem of prejudice old and new. But add to it a few murders. This will keep the pages turning trying to figure out who done it. Its an awesome book my 1st time reading this author and looking forward to the next book ...more

Very good! This book was perfect to start my year as i really loved it. It's a second chance romance if you want ( i'm not fond of those but in this case no cheating was involved only misunderstanding or something like that) but more importantly a romance suspense and i LOVE those! really when it's cold or raining outside staying in front of the fire immersed in a good investigation is a real pleasure. In this case it's even

This is the first book in Debbie Herbert’s new suspense series- Appalachian Prey. I’ve read several of Debbie’s paranormal romance books about mermaids, shape-shifters, and witches, and I love her writing! This book too does not disappoint. Here’s an example of Debbie Herbert’s vivid description that draws you right in: “A thousand shades of green dotted a turquoise sky. From here the wild Chattooga River, which served as the border between Georgia and South Carolina appeared as a thin line of ...more

Realistic with true-to-life characters and an original premise, APPALACHIAN PREY grabs the attention and never lets go. I was immediately captivated by how genuine the setting plus people were at all times. Debbie Herbert certainly makes the Appalachian locale come across as very credible, and the manner in which several individuals were determined to do things their way also seemed to fit their personalities. The author had me believing in every situation that arose, regardless of whether the ...more

After having left twelve years ago, Lilah Tedder came back to oversee her father’s affairs. Chauncy Tedder was murdered a week ago; Chauncy might have had a moonshine operation, but he wasn’t into drug dealing, which is one of the first things Lilah heard after her return to Lavender Mountain. Three months before, Lilah had visited, and during her break she and local deputy Harlan Sampson spent a glorious week together. Lilah was hoping for more, until Harlan confessed that he wanted to run for ...more

Appalachain Prey is a second chance romance slash suspense. This story actually surprised me. I had the sinister culprit picked entirely wrong. Debbie Herbert kept me on my toes. She left me with so much to think about while reading. I loved it.

Lilah came home after the demise of her father to tie up family affairs only to be put in the middle of a bloody feud. She had a secret that she wasn't ready to openly share with the entire clan. She needed to decide if she wanted to share her secret

While Lilah is home to clean up her father's affairs after his murder, she begins to uncover more family secrets. With another murder in her family happening so soon after her father's she has to rely on the help of her old flame and father of her own child. But can she trust to work with Harlan without falling for him all over again? And will Harlan be able to help her before the killer gets to her first? Loved seeing the love between Harlan and Lilah grow again.

I really wish I could give books half-stars. 4-stars doesn’t do this, and many other books justice, but I don’t give out 5-stars easily either.

I’m sent prolly a dozen books to read each month. I don’t accept many, but I had read a previous book by Herbert, and I liked her style. However, when I opened the kindle file & found it was a Harlequin, I grimaced. I am not a sappy-romance fan. I remember my mom’s shelves & shelves of Harlequin books. I didn’t understand how she could read 2 of

After seeing all the great reviews, I took a chance and purchased this book, but for the life of me, I can't understand what was so great about it.....

You have a stupid moron of a H who is career driven and thinks the h is bad for his career because of who her family is, so he breaks things off and 3 months later, h comes back to town, pregnant, and telling H that the baby is not his because she doesn't want to pin him down and ruin his chances of becoming a Sheriff. She is also rightfully hurt

From start to finish this was a real page turner, I finished it in just a few hours. I took an instant liking to Lilah Tedder, and Harlan Sampson. Though I did want to kick Harlan in the butt for choosing his dream of being Sheriff over his love of Lilah the moonshiner’s daughter. Throughout the book I had picked out different people to be the murderer, boy was I in for a shock when he/she revealed l themselves. Appalachian Prey has all the elements you look for in a romantic suspense; danger, ...more

I received a copy of this with no strings attached .

This is a very good story and another outstanding effort by Ms. Herbert. I have read 8 or 9 of her books and look forward to many more!

In this story, Lilah, a woman who has seen too much tragedy and sadness but must face the daunting task of settling the family business while hiding a secret that continues to grow.

So many things are lurking in the shadows including a past lover, a recent rise in crime (possibly tied her kin), and those that

Engaging and fast paced, this book leaves you wondering how peaceful the mountains really are.

Danger lurked around the corner, just far out enough to make me wonder, who is the killer? And what secrets does the Tedder family keep?

It was an amazing book, and I really love the new direction that Mrs. Herbert took with this Intrigue novel. Mystery is defiantly a strong suit for Debbie! Usually I can tell who the killer is right away in books like this, but the ending was a big surprise.

Lilah's back home to settle her father's estate and property when she crosses paths with the Deputy who she never thought she'd see again. When there's more danger surrounding her then her father's old customers coming around for moonshine, they find themselves thrown together again.

Appalachian Prey;

Lilah Tedder only came home to Lavender Mountain to find out what happened to her father. Him selling moonshine could have gotten him murdered, but it could be more. It could be dangerous, and that’s where Harlan Sampson comes in. He’s the deputy of Lavender Mountain, and they have history.
A secret she keeps from him will either bring them together or tare them apart.

What will happen between them.

Suspense is amazing in this book. My first book by Debbie Herbert. I look

A mystery and a love story combined

Good plot with an interesting variety of characters. The setting was very different from most stories in the genre, and I did enjoy reading about a different area of the country. The main reason I didn't rate it give stars were numerous grammatical errors in the book, including missing words and misuse of words. I'd love to see this story edited and re-released with the errors fixed. I will be reading the next book in the series, though, as the plot kept me

I read this book in one day was really well written. It flowed in away that i had to know and couldn't put it down. Small town Bigotry based on who your family is hit home to me some . I wanted to smack Harlen in the back of the head and tell him stop being such a people pleaser till he redeemed himself in my eyes. Lilah had so much happen to her in such a short time period my heart hurt for her. This book was a great read and would recommend it to everyone.

This book was a great read. I absolutely love the writing style of Debbie. She has a way of churning a web in this story. I am left wanting more. Lilah is my favorite character right along with Harlan. They just fit well together. Lilah went through a lot of pain in this book. I am glad she got her happy ending even though she lost s much. If you haven't heard of this author just take the leap and try her. I am glad I did.

I honestly feel like this could've been written about my family, LOL! Seriously, though. Lilah was a badass, preggers and all. I love second-chance romances, and Harlan and Lilah deserved their do-over. Their past turmoil added a great combination of hope and tension to the relationship. They each had their own aspirations apart from each other, which kept their characters grounded and realistic. I wanted it to work out for the them so badly! Another great book from THE Debbie Herbert!

Great read. I loved the mystery, it was very interesting and different than what you would normally read about. I love harlequins, I have read so many that I can usually guess the bad guy early on. This one however had me guessing at every page. Which I loved. I was surprised my the little twist on who the killer was. I look forward to the second book in the series.

Debbie never disappoints me! A great mix of real life crime, screwed up family and romance that doesn’t make you gag! This author weaves a world that’s easy to fall into keeping your mind guessing as there’s never an obvious villain sometimes there’s s handful!
