Before the coming of Christopher Columbus to Haiti in 1492 the country could, without danger of sounding too romantic, be described as a relative paradise. It was well populated (some put the population at over 30,000) and divided into six different tribes. Within a generation most of them were dead. The islands were a graveyard, partly due to Old World diseases to which the natives had no immunity but also due to the immense cruelty inflicted upon them by the settlers.
