I received a free copy of Southern Storm The Tragedy of Flight 242 by Samme Chittum from Goodreads for my honest review. An absolute masterpiece of a book. The history of Southern Airways Flight 242 is so detailed and well told. The book takes you through all the details of the crash and the day it took place. The details of the weather the day of the crash, the aviation mechanics, the lives of those affiliated to the crash, and how it impacted the community of New Hope, GA. This book is a must ...more

Overall, didn't like this one as much as Chittum's other plane crash book, the Flight 981 Disaster. (Yeah, our girl Samme has a weird thing with plane crashes). It was a little more disorganized and jumped around more, and felt repetitive at times.

On the other hand, this plane crash is almost inherently more interesting than that of Flight 981, which just crashed in a French forest. Flight 242, by contrast, crashed on a highway in Georgia (an attempted "crash landing" which was more crash than l

This is an episode of “Air Disasters,” only with a little more meat on its bones. A quick look at the devastating crash of Southern Airways Flight 242 in April of 1977, following a battering from a hailstorm and horrible intel from the control tower.

A basic just-the-facts account, but with some insight and reflection provided by crash survivors and witnesses. Laurence Gonzales’ “Flight 232: A story of Disaster and Survival” about the events leading up to and following the crash landing of Unite

This is a reasonably well-researched, if concise, look at an air tragedy of 40 years ago. Flight 242 was well-covered at the time, and as the book shows, yielded some important lessons on aviation weather hazards and emergency flight procedure. The incident was simple enough, as reconstructed: the DC9 flew into a dense hailstorm after missed warnings, the hail was dense and heavy enough to ruin both engines and damage the cockpit windshield. The pilots tried to glide to a dead-stick landing, alt ...more

WOW! This was as good or perhaps better than the first book I read by this author. Really riveting stuff! So fascinating all the way through. And so many interesting things (the near death experiences of several passengers, the terrible aftermath for Robert St. Martin's family...) I wonder that this hasn't been given the great big Hollywood treatment because it has such epic sweep.
If you have any interest at all in the subject then I would recommend this without hesitation. I'm still a bit breat

Closer to 3.5. I was initially apprehensive because of the tie-in to the show "Air Disasters", which I love in its repackaged and its original Canadian form, but was worried it would be a straight adaptation of an episode I've watched several times already. I needn't have worried, as the story behind the disaster was fleshed out and its causes and aftermath described in clear, yet not blunt language. ...more

This is a Goodreads win review. This is a good book about the crash of Flight 242 where the plane flies into a heavy hail storm because they missed the warning.

Very throughout telling of the event, with many insights from people involved with the crash. Second great book I have read by Samme Chittum.
