An extraordinary book written by a gentleman truly beloved throughout the rural East Texas areas in which he practiced 'old~timey' medicine come rain or shine, birthing, trauma, adversity, joy, and dying. Gene Schulze was a seminal influence upon my husband, as a physician, a philosopher of life and a noble man. I was delivered and tended throughout my youth by just such a physician, and I am formed from the very soul by such beauty and meaning For anyone who enjoys medicine, tradition, innovation in thinking, challenge in life, the forging of the heroic journey, the poetic~ this might be a great read and influence upon all aspects of your soul, heart and life.
I am the son of a small town doctor. I occasionally accompanied my Dad when he made house calls in the early 1950's in Southeast Texas. This book is about a physician who started his career in Schulenburg, Texas. Although the time he wrote about predated my birth, the experiences he described reminded me of stories my Dad told me. I am purchasing a copy of the book for my son-in-law, who will begin his own medical career in 2012.
Fairly entertaining and interesting book about a country doctor who deals with patients who are from the old country and have superstitious beliefs and practices. They are backwards in their health care but quick to seek out the doctor.
