The only way to fight a powerful darkness is with a powerful love

Olivia Moreland prides herself on discrediting charlatans, particularly the false mediums that flock to London. But when Lord Stephen St. Leger requests her help in investigating an alleged psychic’s claims, she can’t deny the ominous feeling she has within the walls of his ancient estate—or the intimately fa

Good start for this series! I enjoyed the writing and liked the characters. The plot of a possible ghostly encounter, debunking a charlatan and a good romance worked well. All things felt believable.

I will definitely continue with The Mad Morelands series!

PHENOMENAL read!!! I have a feeling I am going to run out of superlatives before I am through reading this entire series. I read the sixth book in the series first – because I received a review copy. I was so in awe of the writing, the story and the Moreland family in that book that I just had to go back and read all of the first books. Boy am I glad I did. I can’t think of a b
Mesmerized is the story of a paranormal skeptic, Olivia Moreland, who has made it her mission to debunk fraudulent mediums and psychics but who finds herself faced with truly inexplicable phenomena.

The story was good, but I'm afraid it fell short of great or even very good. The biggest problem with all of the various subplots, I felt, was pacing. Most of the last half of the book dragged on as the characters rehashed the same ideas and conversations over and over again. "No, it couldn't be!" "B

Candace Camp has come through again for me with another great read! Mesmerized, kept me coming back for more romance and suspense of what will happen at the end. It was a who done it, oh no she didn’t and man, I better start sleeping with a bat. Once these 20/20’s see something travel through a wall and disappear. I wouldn’t stand there and ask did you see that?
No sir! I wouldn’t care what I’m wearing, even if I was stark naked. I would yell: Tom, I’m outta here and head straight for door. In m

Mesmerized was an intriguing blend of paranormal with historical romance and I enjoyed it quite a bit!

Olivia Moreland is in the business of exposing charlatans and it is during the course of such an investigation that she meets Lord Stephen St. Leger who inadvertently exposes her intentions. After his brother passed away leaving him to inherit the family title as well as the ancestral home, Stephen has returned home to discover his mother has become intertwined with a woman who claims
When I saw Candace Camp's Mesmerized on Netgalley, I clicked without thinking. Candace Camp's books are published in Turkey too and I

Much to my surprise, I greatly enjoyed this book! Historical fiction is not my favorite, but the characters in this story were very easy to relate to. I am definitely going to continue with this series.
I really was excited about this book for the first 100 pages. Mesmerized was going places! It seemed to be a unique Victorian Romance about a paranormal skeptic out to prove that a "Russian psychic" is a phony. There was a bit of mystery and the tone was suitably dark and serious. Candace Camp's writing...wasn't stellar, but I was so excited I let it slide. I felt like I'd discovered the historical romance equivalent of Nancy Drew, and I was really excited.

But There was too much going

Olivia Morelands is the youngest daughter of a noble family known by the lots as the  Mad Morelands.  Despite being a lady, she made a profession of investigating and exposing charlatans, specifically those who are engaged in paranormal activities, and in such investigations she met Lord Stephen St. Leger.

After his brother's death, Stephen came home to clai

When I first opened this book, I’ll be honest, I expected to be reading a bodice-ripper. Thankfully, this book mixed historical romance with a dash of the paranormal to produce something rather different- and something that I rather enjoyed!
Olivia Moreland is one of the ‘Mad Morelands’- a suspiciously ahead-of-their-time family, who have been marked by society as ‘odd’ because of the progressive beliefs that they have and crazy adventures they all get up to: Olivia’s sister is a budding chemist,

Olivia Moreland investigates psychic phenomena in order to debunk them. So when Stephen St. Leger invites her to his country estate in order to discredit a so-called ‘medium’ who has her claws into his mother, and strange phenomena begin to occur, Olivia and Stephen have to band together to try and find out what is behind the disturbances. They also have to contend with Pamela, the conniving widow of Stephen’s older brother, who seems determined to get her hooks into Stephen now he is the holder ...more

Mediums were very prevalent in Victorian England, as were those who tried to debunk them. Lady Olivia Moreland is one of these debunkers and she's hired by Stephen St. Ledger to unmask the medium that's bilking his mother of both her jewels and her peace. Thus, Olivia travels to Blackhope, Stephen's ancestral manor, and discovers that there may be something more sinister at work that she could have imagined. (FYI...the description in the book says the brother was murdered but this w

Mesmerized is about a young lady who makes her business to oust charlatans who pose as psychics, etc and one night when she was about to catch one in the act she is caught by Lord Stephen St. Leger who thinks she is part of the act and that he is catching her.

Once he finds out who Olivia is he decides to hire her to go with him to his home because his mother has invited some psychics to come to the house and he is afraid they are taking advantage of her because she wants to contact her dead son.

This was the Barnes and Noble serial read for the month of February.

I've been reading these serial reads on my nook app for a while now, and this was the first one that made me want to buy a copy and read the whole thing instead of waiting for each section to be released over the month. Olivia was such a great character, and she was a paranormal investigator before it was cool. Hashtag goals. Her family was crazy and amazing, and I definitely want to check out the other books in this series that

I absolutely adored this book! It reminded me so much of the gothic mysteries of old with the Lady Olivia trying so very hard to prove that ghosts don’t exist but unfortunately for her and Stephen the current Lord of Blackhope they keep getting visited by the past inhabitants of the manor to solve an age old mystery. Plus they have to solve the mystery of what is happening to them all with a group who is performing fake seances. This is definite must read!! I was gifted with this ARC and am so e ...more

This book has two plot elements that I love:
1. Anything to do with psychic investigators and
2. A historical/paranormal combo.

So did it deliver on the implied goodness? Kind of. The heroine is a psychic investigator -- somewhat open-minded but spends her time debunking fake mediums and spiritualists -- and there is an actual paranormal element. The paranormal part was fairly weak, though. As a historical romance, it was okay. I would definitely be willing to read another book by Candace Camp, so

This was my first reading experience with Candace Camp and all I can say is WOW! I loved the Moreland family. I love that society calls them the mad Morelands. I loved that the heroine runs a business, even though she is the daughter of a Duke, and that the business is to debunk fake mediums in London! Everything about this story was a surprise and yet familiar as a regency Romance. I highly recommend this series!
***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***

I LOVE Candace Camp's books, but I was left unsatisfied by this one.
The main characters didn't hook me enough, in fact, the supoorting ones captivated me a lot more and made me want to read their books.

As you know, historical romance is one of my favorite genres and Candace's books are usually all up on my alley. This one was a bit flat, sometimes boring. The supernatural side of it diverged my attention and not for the best. I wanted something

I've never read anything quite like this before - historical romance, with a solid haunted house plot to boot! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main characters were likable, particularly the heroine - a bit more prone to fainting than I'm usually okay with, but intelligent and spunky nonetheless. The paranormal plot wasn't scary, but it did present a good mystery, and the glimpses of the past were intriguing, to say the least. I also appreciated that it was ...more

Worse candace camp book

Unfortunately r innately I skimmed thru most of the book. I was looking for a recency romance but that went into witchcraft and other items that made no logical sense. I will it be reading the rest of the series. It is unfortunate since I normally like candace camp books.

Very different from any romance that I've read lately. The backdrop of a love story of long ago along with the whole pychic phenom that became so popular in the late 1800's gave the story an unusual flair.

It has been such a long time since I have actually read this book... But it stuck with me. This was one of the first Camp books I had read, and to be honest is scared the sh@$!! outa me...

It was an awesome love story, with a little historical paranormal thrown in the mix...

I loved it.

This book was really two books in one. The first part of the plot involves Olivia Moreland, daughter of an eccentric duke who has taken up debunking fake mediums who claim to help rich people reach their loved ones who have passed away. She meets up with Lord Stephen St. Leger whose mother has been taken in by a phony medium who is pretending to talk to her oldest son who died earlier. Stephen asks Olivia to come to his home to help expose the medium and stop his mother from having her grief tak ...more

There are some aspects of this story that I found thoroughly enjoyable, and a couple of things that I didn't enjoy (or found unrealistic that had nothing to do with the paranormal aspect of the story).

Because I like to end things on a positive note whenever possible, let me begin by going over the things that I did not enjoy. To begin with, some of the phrases used seemed entirely too modern to have been set in the time period. I also found it highly unlikely that Olivia would have been allowed

“Good God!” he exclaimed, with some amazement. “You’re not—you’re one of the ‘mad Morelands’?”
Olivia jerked the door open and stepped up into the carriage, shrugging off his helping hand. She turned and sat down, leaning forward and saying, “Yes! I am definitely one of the ‘mad Morelands.’ Indeed, I am probably the maddest of the lot. If I were you, I’d burn that card, lest some of it rub off on you.”

A perfectly acceptable and fun historical romance. I really enjoyed the addi

February's B&N Readouts selection is a tale of a fierce woman named Olivia Moreland, descending from a family with a reputation of peculiarity, who spends her time disproving the abilities of charlatans around London in the late 1800s. The book steps right into the action, with Olivia attending a séance and attempting to discredit its host, but instead gets thwarted by Stephen St. Leger, who is attending the event for somewhat similar reasons, to prove that they are frauds, after the way one of ...more

This was February's Free Serial Reads on Barnes & Noble's Nook app. And it was a great choice!

Olivia Moreland, who prefers "Miss" to "Lady," is quite unusual for a young woman in 1876 and comes from a family who holds quite progressive views. She is not interested in being in society, deciding her calling is exposing mediums who prey on the gullible who hope to make contact with love ones who have died. While attending a seance, she is accosted by Lord Stephen St. Leger who thinks Olivia is work
