I felt useless when my mother had to have her knee replaced. Neither one of us knew what to expect, nor what questions to ask. I was learning as I went along, which was not the best way to go. Now that she is having hip problems, I decided to start seeking information ahead of time. I was pleased to get my hands on “Butternut to Bionic,” because the author, Tiffany Anderson, has created a concise resource guide that covers hip replacement from beginning to end. She writes it from both her professional experience in the healthcare field, and from her personal perspective as a woman who had to have a double hip replacement after developing a life-threatening illness. This illness began with her developing such a horrible case of jaundice, the whites of her eyes turned butternut yellow. It ended with her fancy new “bionic” hips. Hence the title, “Butternut to Bionic.”

Anderson uses her knowledge to provide readers with extensive, yet concise information that includes resources, suggestions and a checklist for people who are either going through hip replacement or assisting someone going through the process. Where she suggests questions for doctors, she leaves room for the reader to record the information gathered. I loved seeing this in her section about building a medical team. Going through a nerve-wracking experience would make it easy to forget what to ask when you have your surgeon directly in front of you. Having the questions in the book already laid out for you makes the process much easier. Anderson also includes notes providing information from her own experience. I also appreciate that she provided extensive information about alternative healing techniques that will assist the reader with healing and recovery.

As an individual who will be acting as a caregiver for my mother, I learned a great deal about how I will best be able to serve her as she heals. But, I also gained additional knowledge that I hope will help keep me from needing my own replacement. This includes learning about how five extra pounds adds twenty-five pounds of stress of my joints. Since I have a lot more than five pounds to lose, I am going to use this knowledge to motivate me to stick with a program. My body depends upon it.

“Butternut to Bionic,” by Tiffany Anderson is a must read for people involved with individuals needing hip replacement surgery. The author writes in an easy-to-read, friendly manner which will help reduce readers stress. She explains everything as she goes along, so someone without a medical background will not feel left behind. This resource is also laid out well so that the reader can follow along as they proceed with their own experience. The detailed timeline at the end of the book will really help individuals know what to expect from the beginning to 5+ years in the future. This is highly recommended reading.
