What a wonder this novel is. It’s tender, humane, and moving in its treatment of its fascinating cast of characters. It’s also a compassionate meditation on time and fate that could have come from Camus or Sartre, or Ingmar Bergman. Akebrand’s style is sharp and scintillating. My favorite kind of book. Poetic. Metaphors that will change forever the way I think about some things. Quiet almost seems like the wrong word because all the big themes of loss, love, death are here. But the way the novel talks about them is through everyday things like chores and cooking and the weather, and this novel helps us learn the way those things have always been inflected with the big events of life and the big events in life with the quotidian.

Äkebrand is brilliant with words and creating images and feelings. She recognizes meaning in everyday interactions and scenes that make me marvel. This novel is a poem that doesn’t underestimate its audience.
