Step-by-step color photographs and descriptive detail make this book indispensable for beginners looking to create beautiful and functional scented candles on their very first try, and for experienced crafters who want to sharpen their skills. Precise instructions eliminate the guesswork that too often creeps into how-to books and help you avoid common mistakes. Gleaned from the expertise of master candle makers, this guide presents everything a novice needs to know to get started crafting traditional tapers and molded candles, container and rolled beeswax candles, and interesting variations on each. Includes guidelines for buying tools and materials, preparing the work space, and working safely and effectively, as well as suggested shopping lists and information on scents and dyes. New edition includes a gallery of candle-making projects.
Compared to some other candlemaking books I've read, this was a great find. It included more detail without overloading you with information. Tons of pictures to show every step. Great material for a total beginner.
A very in-depth guide, covering all aspects of beginning candlemaking. The emphasis on petroleum-based wax is not for me, but I understand why the author chose to work with it in this context.
This book starts with very basic container candles and progressively moves to more challenging projects. Each project includes an approximation of how much time crafters need to dedicate to each one.
Now that I have read a few other books on the subject, this one is one of the better ones. Full of color photographs and detailed step-by-step directions, I found this book most attuned to my tastes (i.e., not gaudy or questionably safe) and style of learning.
I’ve only tried making candles once before with a neighbor. I had no instruction other than his experience, but he was out of practice and we had poor results. Enter this book. It is definitely basic, and sometimes really overdoes it. Who needs four pictures of someone submerging a wick in hot wax, or a full seven pictures illustrating how to wrap a wick around a wooden stick? But overall definitely helpful. I expect more success next time, with this book as a guide.
