Gideon Jane earned the name Ghost for his reclusive nature when he joined a group of guys in Powers, Georgia in a band called Executioners. It had been his way of settling into small town life after living in New York for the past twenty years. He loved the band and his small organic farm. What he didn’t love was being single, but it appeared it was his new reality. He didn’t want his ex back, although he did want something. What that was eluded him until the evening he walked into Nightingale’s Books.

Small town girl Harper Sage knew pain, and she’d lived with it—she had the scars both mental and physical to prove it. It would’ve been easier to hop in her car to find safety and anonymity, but Harper stayed to prove she was stronger than hurled fists and bruising prejudice. She found herself within the safety of a close-knit group of rough bikers and bar bouncers. That didn’t mean it was all perfect.

What’s a girl to do when she craves normalcy and acceptance: she just smiles. Choices are made, some with dire consequences and others that bring her closer to her dream. Will she make the right decision or finally discover escape is her best option?

Author Note: This book contains scenes of violence and descriptions of self-harm.

I've been patiently waiting for Harper's book. I knew her story would be heartbreaking and it was. The abuse she endured from others as well as her own self was so sad. She definitely deserves a HEA.

In steps Gideon, "Ghost". He was absolutely perfect in every way. And so damn swoon worthy.
“At this moment, I don’t want anything from you, just this. Conversation, your presence, your smile and rare laughs. One day I’ll want a date, in the outside world, holding your hand and not see this…” His rough fingertip stroked the grooves she knew were between her brows. “On your face. I like you. I think you’re beautiful. And one day I hope you’ll believe me. That’s it, no ulterior motives. I only want to spend time with you.”

He was exactly what Harper needed. He does everything right and takes all the steps to help her become the person she is meant to be. I love how he accepted her the way she is and doesn't try to make her into something she's not.
"I’ve been bi for as long as I remember. Why should gender or gender identity change how I feel about someone—feel about you? I want you confident in your own skin and body, independent and happy. I don’t want to change you. You be you, I’ll be me, this is just us in this relationship. No one other than us has to get it or approve.”
I'm looking forward to more of this new crew. I can't wait for Joker...another tortured soul.

Very nice start to JM Dabney's new Executioners series. This borrows people from Twirled Ink and Brawlers to add flavour to Ghost and Harper's tale, but at the same time manages to create a new world based on these characters that seems to seamlessly fit in to this utterly wonderful world!

Note: whilst this can certainly be read as a standalone, you'll enjoy it much, much more if you read Twirled Ink, then Brawlers first!

Sighh, I've been waiting for Harper.
Boy, did I know she was gonna break my heart. She really did.
Stuck in an abusive, secret relationship, I could 100% understand how sad she was all the time. Being cast out as a teenager who didn't feel who she was in her own body, then judged for it... I couldn't even imagine. Over the years, she was branded the freak, and she was used to being used or ignored, or worst....abused. I just wanted to hug her.

Ghost, or Gideon, as Harper liked to call him, was so different from all the other guys in the rowdy crews of the other books. He wasn't as alpha'y and in your face! He was patient and sweet and maybe even a little vulnerable too, after moving to Powers after a bad breakup. Once he set eyes on Harper though, there was no one else for him. I love that, insta-love doesn't bother me at all... maybe because I believe in it. Most say it isn't real and it makes stories unbelievable, but I think the opposite.

I also loved Joker. He reminds me so much of Psycho, but maybe with a darker past, if that could be believed. I can't wait for his story! I hope he's next. Just like Psycho, I think he'll be my favorite.
I'm impatiently waiting!

So, okay... Harper has some trouble with an ex...or really just some dude that comes around when he wants to use her and humiliate and hurt her. She's been trying to get away, but he's not the kind of guy who goes away easily... or at all. That's where Ghost can finally make his move, and he takes care of her. I love the way he takes care of her.... he's everthing that she needs and he does it so selflessly. I just loved him.
I'm also glad that the bad guy didn't get away with being a terrible person. If you follow my reviews at all, you know there's nothing I hate more than bad guys who get away. Grrr, not here though. I feel like justice was properly served with this one and it makes me just as anxious to read Joker.... can you tell I'm impatient for Joker?
Sigh...
but okay, alls well that ends well and these two have such a happy ending... or beginning I guess. Harper deserves it so much and Ghost does too, and in my opinion, he's the best to give her what she's always dreamed.
5 well deserved stars from me!

To say I have been waiting for this book would be an understatement. Waiting implies patience... I had none. I know the title is Ghost but it's really more Harper's story. We met Harper in the Brawler series. We knew a lot about her there.

Who is Harper? Without giving away the plot. She is a trans woman. Her whole life she longed for peace within herself. She accepts the wrongs that are done to her by others. She needs to be rescued not only from an abusive relationship but from herself. Enter Ghost. Now, it takes a unique person to love and heal another. Ghost does this almost effortlessly for her. He makes her love herself.

There's a point in the book where she looks at herself in the mirror, naked, for the first time in forever. She says words that show her appreciation for all her parts. It's this moment in the book that even I, as a reader, felt the vulnerability and yet strength of Harper the person.

Even though this book is serious, dark at times, and emotional the author adds levity. She adds humor to tense situations and showers Harper with the love she so much deserves. If you knew of her before you too have longed for her happy ending. If you are just joining that's fine too. The author takes the first chapter and brings you into the life she lives. You see her struggles, her pain, and the prison that is her life.

I commend the author for tackling so many hard issues in this book. Self-harm, depression, suicide attempts, and cheating (this is a past conversation BTW don't freak out). The author gave the transgender community and the LGBTQA community an amazing book written with so much respect and justice. I've read transgender books in the past and often times I feel that I'm just not in the character's head. I can't understand. I didn't feel that way with Harper. I cried with her, laughed with her, I felt the moment the cloud of suffocation lifted and life was breathable again.

I've said this many times, this is my favorite JM Dabney book to date and I can't recommend it enough!

Prior to starting this, I had no idea this is a spin off series and also no idea that this is just a 157 pages novella. Thus, I felt that is not right for me to complaint of the lack of background story for both Harper and Gideon. I didn't read Brawlers series before, so I find the cameos of all the previous couples a bit overwhelming. There seems to be a lot of them together with a bunch of kids and I lost count of the people involved.

Harper is a trans woman who grew up in the same town that she was born in. She seems to have a great support system. She had some loyal friends such as Kyle and Jokey who are ready to defend her honor, so I can't understand why she would self harm and involved in such a toxic relationship with Bill.

Gideon moved into the town two years ago, but this is his first time meeting Harper in the bookstore. From what I understand, Gideon motive was to befriend her with the intention of dating her. His lumbersexual outlook definitely added to his overall appeal, but I just don't really get why did he set out to look Harper in the first place.

Their relationship progression is slow and tentative due to Harper's reservation. Gideon is a perfect gentleman and have all the patience in the world for her. I actually wanted to find their connection and chemistry beside of Gideon just plainly said he was attracted to her.

This book is a really rough read which is why I didn't read it for long time despite liking Harper, the heroine, a great deal in the other books.

There is brutality of all kinds and a good deal of it is on page and even the pieces that are flash back are awful and leave that helpless kind of ache that so much ugly exists.

There is good revenge here and a really sweet and gentle love story.

But the more over the top elements could be replace with more careful writing.

Love this couple though.

This is the first in the Executioners series and it features familiar faces from the Brawlers and Twirled World Ink series’. They’re hard, tough, full of brawn and attitude and you could be forgiven for being a little bit leery of them but once you’re ensconced in that world and they claim you, you’ll have no-one better at your back. We know that even the toughest ones have a heart and will do anything for the family they’ve found in their close-knit group... In this story, we have Harper, a small town girl working in the local bookstore; she’s tormented, full of pain, sadness and resignation. She’s desperate to remain anonymous and feels so undeserving of any form of love of happiness and Ghost - or Gideon to use his given name – a big gruff bearded redhead and a transplant from New York who needed to get away from it all and get over a lovers betrayal. He walks into the local bookstore and meets Harper and what follows is an exquisitely beautiful beginning to a relationship. Harper is extremely damaged, still haunted by her past, of living in a small town as a trans woman and never feeling worthy of any love or kindness, even from herself. Ghost takes his time with her and with lots of patience and tentative steps, shows Harper that she does have worth and she begins to learn to trust again. This isn’t an easy task and there’s also someone out to remind Harper of her demons. I love this world that J. M. Dabney has created, it’s tough, it’s brash, it’s colourful and full of love and I’m sure I can even smell the beer, sweat and leather as I’m reading . This is a fantastic start to the new series and I’m chomping at the bit for Jokers (and Killer’s!) story.

Such a tender story told with striking sensitivity. The MCs are each so believable. I like the individual characters separately but I adore them together. As usual, Dabney creates surrounding characters that I can't wait to learn more about in future books. Also the exact right amount of info from past books/characters is included. Some series and/or spinoff books tend to rely too much for my taste on established characters from earlier stories. Definitely check the topic warning on this one. It deals with sensitive, potential "trigger" issues. In my mind this book ranks with the book "Scary" by Dabney. That is saying an awful lot as that is my personal favorite of all books I've read in the last few years. You'll just have to trust me when I say that's a lot of books.

I have not read any of JM Dabney's other books and that lessened my enjoyment of THIS book because it continuously mentioned characters that I am unfamiliar with. Furthermore, I did not really like the author's writing style and do not think I will read anymore of her books. However, when browsing through this book's Goodread page, it is full of five star reviews, so probably it is me, not the book.

I am currently readng the story but - stupid question but i will still ask- what is the book label as a "MM Romance"? From what i understand, Harper was born as a man but is a woman, but she considers herself being a woman so i don't undersdand why the book is put in the category MM romance + transgender instead of MF romance + transgender?

Edit: i finished the book. It was ok but i just didn't really feel the connection between the characters and i don't understand why Gideon's nickname is ghost... I mean, there is an explanation in the book but i don't feel like it fit with the way Gideon acted during the book...

Ok. So you guys know I have stupid moments. And if you don’t, I’m letting you know, I do. Often. When I made a comment about Ghost and his story, I was talking about this being a m/f book. And it is. To a point. Stupid ass me forgot about Harper and she’s a trans. M to F. The only thing that makes her not completely female, is that she has something between her legs. So I wasn’t even thinking of it in any other way. She’s a girl. Period. So as I said, this is the first m/f of all the series and it’s a beauty.
Harper is used to pain. Having know she was in the wrong body from an early age, she was bullied constantly. Especially when she bought her first dress. Her own parents were indifferent to her and her best friend, Kyle and his parents, basically took her in. They didn’t care she was different. They loved her no matter who she was. Kyle’s mom even helped her learn to apply her makeup. But as the bullying and things got worse, Harper turned to cutting. And after Kyle learned what she was doing, he begged her and asked her to promise not to do it again. So she found another way to get pain, in the form of Bill. Who is psychotic. He lives to humiliate Harper and put her in the hospital or whatever. And being who she is, she feels she deserves it. She couldn’t be more wrong. No one deserves to be hurt. Well, maybe psychotic people or murderers and stuff. You get the drift. She doesn’t deserve to be hurt because she’s different. Everyone thought her and Joker were going to be together, but they are just close friends. The man that got her going in ways she hadn’t dreamed again, was Ghost (Gideon). Gideon was patient with her. He never pushed her. He never hurt her. He always told her she was allowed to say no. He made sure she knew she was always the one in control and nothing would change that. But Bill doesn’t want to give Harper up and he’s determined to basically kill her. And he’s tried to several times, as well as Gideon. This last time, he almost did kill Gideon and Joker as well. And Harper feels full of guilt. What if she lost the men who showed her the only love she’s ever known?
I love Harper. And it breaks my heart the hell she’s had to endure. No one should have to go through that shit. I love that Joker and others do everything to make sure she’s safe and protected. But they can’t stop something she does. She has to make that decision on her own. And she finally does. She breaks it off with Bill, but Bill doesn’t want to let her go. He gets off on hurting her and causing her harm. When Gideon joins in her protection detail, I’m ecstatic. Not only does she get someone who wants to protect her, she gets a man who is the Prince Charming she’s always wanted. Along with dogs as well. Gideon treats her like a queen. She often doesn’t know how to deal with it, but she’s doing her best. And Gideon constantly does everything he can to show her, she’s desirable as she is. For him, she has the perfect body. He’s bisexual, so he has the best of both worlds. Now don’t take that the wrong way. But often trans people have dysphoria issues because of what’s between their legs. And because Gideon is bi, he can accept every single inch of her with no problem. And it made me so damn happy. Harper needed some love and happiness in her life finally and she was getting it. Now if they could just get rid of Bill.
I love, love, love this story. It was perfect, even in it’s harsh moments. And it does have some. Attempted murder, self-mutilation, (cutting) and other things. If it’s a trigger, be careful. Otherwise, enjoy a beautiful story.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

This is the third series by JM Dabney that all kind of link back to each other with a group of fierce, loyal and often crazy men that I have grown to love. If you have read the books from the previous series then I expect like me you have been waiting for Harper’s story. This was always going to be a toughie as it was obvious that Harper had had such a tough time growing up but Ghost lays it all bare and you realise just how much she has suffered at both the hands of others and her own.

Anything different in a small town is always a talking point but for Harper, a Trans woman, her differences were not only talked about but were used as an excuse to bully her and make her feel like less. The effect this had on her mentally was heart-breaking and her coping mechanism involved pain – first from herself and then from anyone who would dole it out. All Harper ever wanted in life was to settle down and be loved but she long ago gave up on her dream and accepted the way others treated her.

Gideon or Ghost as he is known to his friends comes along at just the right time and immediately sees Harper for who she really is. He sees her personality, her humour, her strength and her weakness and he takes it all in his stride whilst offering friendship and a shoulder to lean on. He takes it slowly, careful of her vulnerability but he makes it known from the start that he likes everything he sees and he is willing to wait until Harper can accept more.

This story is painful, gritty and covers a lot of dark subjects. It’s also uplifting and gifts us with hope that you can first rise up and secondly move on. Harper is an inspiration to anyone that has ever felt that they didn’t fit, to anyone that has suffered alone and to anyone that has grabbed a chance and run with it. Ghost may have been her saviour but first of all she had to want to be saved – Ghost gave her that desire to live and slowly but surely he gave her love and trust. Definitely one of my favourites from this author so far.

Now to wait patiently for Joker’s book which I’m sure is going to be explosive.

Finally Harper got her HEA!

Harper, living openly as a transwoman in a small town where everyone knew her before the dresses and hormones. Surviving the bullies and taunts and punishing herself for trying to be herself, it was heartbreaking. Billy is the previous sheriff's nephew and she suffers almost daily from his physical abuse, she longs for a Prince Charming. Gideon/Ghost had left a lucrative events company in New York to move to a small quiet farm to get over a bad breakup, he is private man, sweet and charming. Gideon sees Harper at the book store and falls hard and so begin his courtship - patience, kindness, sweet words and gentle touches.

There are some dark moments, some pretty horrendous moments, and can I say a joyous fatal incident - yeah, he had it coming! It was also nice change to have a softer MC, not the "alpha in your face" as previous books. Gideon stood patiently, supporting Harper, encouraging her to flourish and it was all the feels!!

There were some lighter moments, the side characters were still many (giving Harper and Gideon marks out of ten outside the trailer made me grin), but the predominant one was Joker, he was Harper's "big brother" and literally fought everyone - his life growing up wasn't a bowl of cherries either. I grinned like a loon when Joker was presented with a micro puppy he called "Killer", she had him with her first tiny growl!

Overall, it was an entertaining read and it finished on a great big fat fluffy fairytale ending and it left me with a contented *sigh*.

Joker is next...bring it on....

Simply wonderful storytelling!

The most fleshed out main characters, Gideon (or Ghost) and Harper, a transexual, identified as she throughout, who has suffered terribly with body dysmorphia. Harper is depressed and hurts herself, first by cutting, attempted suicide, then allowing sexual and physical abuse by a homophobic creep, a man named Bill.

Gideon has not had the best of luck in the love department. He is a quiet, somewhat unassuming man.

He falls for Harper, but oh the baby steps! Sweetness and kindness, caring for Harper. Nice and slow, Harper becomes more self-assured. Learning to love herself and, in turn, falling in love with Gideon.

There are two distinct instances of lovemaking, yes lovemaking. Fucking has no place in this story. Beautifully written with a respect for the characters.

Out of all of the books I’ve read so far by this author, I’ve been on a role, this to me is by far the most exceptional. I still have a few more to go and I will continue to read this author’s work. I can say that the writing is getting better. The edits are better but I still find some whoppers. :( Correct that please!

Highly recommended and a good addition to my Ready Steady Ray shelf.

What an amazing start to this new series from this amazing author.

I loved this book. I already knew that Harper's story was gonna break my heart but I still was gutted when reading what she had been through. This book is amazingly written. The sensitive subject matter if written with such care and understanding that it is easy to feel the same emotions as the characters as if you as going through the exact same turmoil.

I wish I was able to give this more than five stars because it really if that amazing. I can't to read more of this series in the future.

Definitely not my favorite out of the books in the world of Twirled Ink/Brawlers/Executioners.
I liked that Harper finally got her story and that she got a nice HEA.
I must say much of the story leans on previous books and I would recommend readers who are not familiar with the previous series to start with Berzerker to get a feel for the characters or at least to read the books about the Brawlers first since those characters and events are present in this story.

"Tell me something good.”
"Gideon.”
"I thought it was Ghost.”
"I like Gideon better.”

I'll admit, I thought Harpers story was going to be an emotional massacre, and whilst it was sad at times and we got to see how they felt about her body and her headspace, for someone who's story could have been annihilating, It was quite light.

I barely cried, there wasn't a huge amount of push/pull as you'd expect, there wasn't any instances of random abuse on the street which I'd also expect, I was prepared for detailed scenes of her self harming, there wasn't any of those either.

What we got instead was a very sweet romance; the Hero, Ghost aka. Gideon, (A name I didn't like in the beginning but actually warmed to because of his character) was super sweet and *key word* patient, you really could experience how deep his feelings were and how much he wanted her from the beginning and here's the important part, I understood why.

Harper was what most of society would deem flawed, yet there was something extremely delicate, kind and lively underneath the ghost that the girl had become. She didn't push away as much as you'd think, if at all, but nearly every time Gideon would show his love for her; she'd been surprised.

“He likes you.” “But why?”

It took a lot of patience on Gideon's part and a lot of risk and faith on Harpers, but they spent time together at the farm and formed a 'light on the romance and sex' companionship that everyone (for the most part) respected and let blossom on its own and in the end it meant that they both got their HEA with hope for more good things to come.

Of course there was also the villain of the story, who caused the pain and drama, Bill. There was a few incidents with him that were violent and all but the author made the scenes brief and light on detail, so you understand what's happening but don't experience the horror.

"I found a loophole.”
"Bill?”
.........
“You turned him into your razor.”

I have to say out of all the books, one of the funniest moments yet happened in this book, i laughed so much that I'd almost say this book is worth reading just for this scene.

"She lifted her head to find the whole Brawlers Crew including Tank, Elijah, and Scary outside, Twitch, Hunter, and Gregory held up signs scrawled with 10s. They were all smiling as they stared toward the window. “Oh hell, they didn’t.”"

The editing is still a pretty big issue for this authors books, if you decide to read this, be prepared to notice mistakes and errors throughout, it has gotten slightly better but there was still missing question marks(something the author seems to have done on purpose if I'm not mistaken) and missing words.

The author did a really good job of providing intrigue and a subtle build up to Jokers story too so I'm super excited to move on to him next and find out what's going on and who will be the one to have the ability to touch him. (Because if there's no cuddling and affection - I'm done).

Safety.
•contains very brief and lightly detailed scenes of attack, rape, self harm (in the past).
•no cheating, no OP(see below) no disloyalty.
•In the beginning, before the relationship, Harper gets an unwanted 'visit' from Bill, he strangles and rapes her. Obviously she doesn't 'ask for it' or anything but because of her mind and self hatred she sees Bill as her way of self harm without cutting.
•Gideon hasn't had sex since his cheating ex which I believe was 2 years ago? And Harper has only ever had assholes 'bending her over' she had never been kissed before Gideon.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book but not as much as the Twirled World Ink Series & the Brawlers Series. Maybe, it was because I found that it was a slow-burn book and a lot less s*xual than the books in the previous series, apart from Lucky & Priest’s book after Priest was gang r*ped by his ex and his friends. It also made sense after everything that Harper’s been through in the past. I liked that we got more bonding between Gideon aka Ghost and Harper before they take their relationship further. Harper needs slow as she’s had extremely sh*tty luck. It’s been hell living in a small town where everyone knows that she’s a trans-women.

I thought Ghost and Harper were great together and they just clicked. I liked that Ghost took things at Harper’s pace and asked if he could kiss her before he did, and then let her lead the kiss as he didn’t want to make her panic. I love how protective of her Joker is and that he even threatened his friend Ghost that he’d f*ck him up if he did anything to disrespect Harper. He knows what a good guy Ghost is but Harper’s been through so much and she’s also his best friend. Man, Joker’s new puppy K*ller was totally adorable and the way Joker smiled at her was cute. I found it funny that Harper decided to give Joker her as a gift because he needs someone that’s his own and it’s even funnier that she’s Joker’s spirit animal.

It was heartbreaking hearing a bit about Joker’s past and then seeing him have a flash back after his fight with Harper’s f*cked in the head (kind of ex) Bill when he jumped Ghost and Harper outside Brawlers. I really just wanted to hug him but he can’t stand being touched so that wouldn’t have gone down well. I really want to find out more about him, and his story is definitely going to be an emotional read that’s for sure. Joker deserves to find his happily ever after but he’s not going to make it easy for the guy to break down his walls but it’ll be so worth it in the end. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.

Ghost starts off by introducing us to Harper, a character whose raw pain, grit, and vulnerability is on display through the mental and physical scars she bears, inflicted at the hands of hatred, prejudice, and self-loathing. It makes it easy to feel protective of Harper and want her to find healthy happiness, understanding, and love. It’s almost palpably painful to read her story, but then to be faced with her empathy, especially towards Joker and his tormented life’s story, is uplifting and humbling.

Gideon, known as Ghost, is a kind and gentle-hearted man who truly only has good and loving intentions toward Harper. He had heard some of the stories about the sullen and private young woman, including the fact-based rumors about Bill, and how the physically abusive man struck out against Harper, his favorite defenseless target.

As much as I thoroughly enjoyed the compelling creativity and ingenuity of the storyline, it was confusing at times to keep track of the various secondary characters and their respective affiliations, but the names and personalities/demeanors were creative and memorable. I knew going in to the book that Harper was transgender, but I wanted my questions answered/backstory provided earlier, perhaps. The puppy sub-plot was sweet. True love and romance was evident in the evolution of Ghost’s and Harper’s relationship, and it was delivered in a tasteful and heartwarming way. The twists and suddenness with concluding the Bill story angle was blindsiding and unexpected – brilliantly done.

The lack of editing/proofing was distracting for me (granted, it was an ARC), and suspect it was remedied prior to official release.

One definite resulting from this book? I am so intrigued by Joker, and already have his story uploaded to my reading queue!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Ghost.
