Richard Verrell is looking forward to a quiet weekend in Kent.

It certainly starts out that way – that is until he wanders across his host’s fields for a spot of rough-shooting.

Coming across a little garden shed, he’s amazed to find an immense ‘blower four and a half’ Bentley inside.

Arriving back at the house, he convinces himself that something isn’t right and

Sandy *The world could end while I was reading and I would never notice*
This is the third book by Roderic Jeffries that I have read, but the first of the Blackshirt series and, liking-wise, it falls right in the middle with a 3.5 rating.

AN EXTRACT: ' "Dead! How? "
"He had an accident late last night. He was unfortunate enough to fall in the river, which as you know runs past his garden. He must have fallen, knocked himself unconscious, then have rolled in the river and drowned. He was inclined to be a little careless."
It was all too obvious that these men did not

Blackshirt is a British pulp hero, much in the same vein as The Saint.

While on a quiet weekend visiting a friend in the countryside, Blackshirt discovers some sort of electronic device, then a body.

Blackshirt investigates, of course, and finds a bureaucrat who wants to keep him out of the case.

Some pretty exciting stuff. Surprised this guy never had a movie.

This was such a romping good time with a mix of AJ Raffles, the Scarlet Pimpernel, the Black Stiletto (Raymond Benson) and Richard Hannay all rolled into one smooth gentleman cracksman.

In this book Blackshirt is up to his usual ways in and extraordinary high action and adventure solving the mystery and collusion of a madcap conspiracy involving Bentley cars and much more. is is a sequel of the book also by Roderic Jefferies Black Shirt Passing by, which is also an outstanding work of fiction on its own merits. I Loved it. A compelling story line with as stated previously high levels of action and suspense or what is known as Adventure. This Thriller is one for everyone to ...more

Blackshirt was published in '52. The first Bond published in '53. If Bond hadn't ended up a double O, he'd have been Blackshirt: a successful writer, successful thief and savior of England's nascent atomic energy program. All done with a splash of grace.

A brilliant blend of Jack Reacher style and Raffles.

I loved reading the Blackshirt books as a very young man in the 1950's. I was delighted to find they are available on Kindle. I shall really enjoy the re-reading them. The fight scenes will thrill lovers of the Jack Reacher style of protagonist, in the form of the 'Gentleman thief' Blackshirt.
