MUSTAPHA KEMAL ATATURK, the great Turkish dictator, is a figure of great significance to the modern world. He did in Turkey what, in effect, Nasser and the other present-day “strong men” are trying to do in their countries, and he is their model and ideal. In fact, Nasser said of this book specifically “This has been the most important book in my life.”

Yazarın bazı yerleri acayip salladığı; özellikle Atatürk'ün özel hayatını bariz belli. Okurken "Orada mıydı be adam dediğim oldu." :) Bunun dışında yanlı bir biyografi okuyacağımı zaten biliyorum. Karşılaştırmalı okumanın kıymetini bir kez daha anladım.

This is probably the most distinctive Ataturk biography that you can read, as it is written from a completely different view, though I would definitely not recommend it to newcomers of the subject. For people who have knowledge about Ataturk, who have read the usual biographies of him which are meant to be impartial (Mango, Kinross, Atay, Aydemir), this book offers a new way of looking at things although it is not meant to be historically accurate. The author makes it clear that he is not fond ...more

Vaguely interesting from a historical point of view, if you want to read a profoundly xenophobic Westerner's account of Turkish history. It's definitely a very different take on events than the one you get when you visit Anitkabir, but it doesn't seem any more accurate. Much is made of his "cruel, Oriental mind," which gets old quick. Most of the book is about his military career and rise to power - his reforms (which are absolutely mindblowing) are given short shrift. Though one can't help but ...more

"I will lead my people by the hand along the road until their feet are sure and they know the way. Then they may choose for themselves, and rule themselves. Then my work will be done."

That would be better starting to state some thoughts briefly with the astonishment occurred on me by the non-solid arguments about the book from the people who take different sides on Mustafa Kemal (MK):

Those who don't like MK, generally use this book for their own shrewd benefits to degrade MK with the

I must admit I enjoyed this book enourmously, though it is of course deeply Orientalist as per Edward Said. The style has the ring of Greek and Roman biographies, with its spare, simple narrative, pithy quotations, and set-piece demonstrations of Character. As previous reviews have stated, this book shouldn't be used as a historical source, but as literature it is superb. I also think it resonates a deep respect for Ataturk and his determination to save Turkey, while also characterising him as ...more

Dünya Savaşı'ndan ...more

Appears that a lot of Turks just decided to storm this book for the fact that it didn't fulfill their fantasy of a great democratic liberator who was Muslim. The only reason I rate this 5 stars is to get the rating higher from all the people spamming it 1 star without even reading it. They come from Turkish Propaganda video's and books, claim things that aren't theirs as theirs and even go as far to say as Germany was *ONLY* using the Ottoman Empire during WW1 when in reality they did much for ...more

I found this book very eye opening. It reflects both good and bad about Mustafa Kemal which leaves you with lots of questions about everything you know.. Hence, it gave me the sense of objectivity. The story spans the most important period in history of Turkey. So, it’s not only about him but also the history of this country.

This book is totally worth to read. We can never be sure how much of the story is true but as a whole, the facts within the book support each other and make good sense. Looking at Mustafa Kemal in a realistic way impressed me and made me think a lot. Definitely read the English version!!! For Turkish folks, There are a lot of banned parts in Turkish version.
