The Connaghers #6

Mine to Break

The Mistress of Dallas doesn’t date vanilla men. Mal doesn’t need to—not with all the submissives she meets at the club she sponsors or her job as Executive Producer of the most risque adult television station in Texas. But then she meets Detective Colby Wade and decides to make an exception. As a former soldier now working the narcotics task force, Colby is lean, tough, and cocky. Certainly not a submissive bone in his body. But her Mistress instincts insist that there’s more to Detective Wade beneath the surface. A silent challenge that she can’t refuse. It’ll be a fun night. Have a few drinks and a nice dinner. See if she can make the confident man blush or sweat a little. She’ll enjoy him while it lasts, but she fully expects him to walk away after a little taste of what a powerful, dominant woman expects in her bed. If he’s even brave enough to make it that far.Colby’s never met a battle that he couldn’t face with the supreme confidence of a combat Marine. After two tours in Afghanistan and years working the streets as a cop until he made detective, he’s feeling… ragged. On edge. And yeah, desperate. So far, he’s managed to hold his shit together well enough that he hopes his partner doesn’t know how close he is to exploding. He needs an outlet, a safe way to release the pent-up emotions that he keeps buried. It’s bad enough that he’s actually considered re-enlisting.He needs a new battle, but he doesn’t want to bring a war to the streets of Dallas.Instead, maybe he’ll bring that war to the Mistress of Dallas’s bed.

Not a standalone. You’re expected to be familiar with how they met. It’s referred to, but not explained or revisited. Tried really hard to like this. Kept reading past my boredom point. The problem wasn’t the H. I rather liked him. It was the h. Absolutely no development up to this point. So many references to whatever happened to them in a prior book. Except I didn’t read that book. And I’m not going to read that book. I didn’t buy the h as a dominant. She is hot and lowers her voice. And by hot I mean she actually is a furnace. I didn’t buy that she wanted H for anything other than to fill an open position left by her prior sub Andy... again not in this book. If her development all comes past the 50% mark, too bad. She also has a propensity to call him “sugar” which seemed affected. A lot of words spent on other character noise. Blech.

4 stars for a surprisingly sweet, tender, and emotional story, considering it is the love story of a famed Domme and a cocky cop who isn't ready to submit to anyone or anything. People who, like me, may not be big fans of Domme/sub stories, may find themselves seeing them in a whole new light. That, and blackberry cobbler.

As the famed Mistress of Dallas, Mal shouldn't be a good fit for Colby, a former soldier turned cop who is battling severe PTSD. There's the issue of BDSM - Colby doesn't think he's submissive; not to mention issues about age, race, and families. Yet, somehow, Mal and Colby recognize in each other a kindred sexual and emotional spirit. Their fling turns into a beautiful, almost old-fashioned claiming with both standing up to family and friends to be together.

Note: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review.

Endearing

The fem dom or domme, is not my kink. But, Ms Burkhart writes them in such a way that I not only find the fem dom palpable, but likeable and enjoyable. Not to mention I have been waiting for Mal's story since we first met her back in Hurt Me So Good. It was worth the wait. We met Colby in Yours To Take where there was a hint of things to come. But this story went beyond expectations. I found Mal and Colby endearing. Their story inspiring. I loved the brief visits with some of the Connaghers. Love them! Mine to Break is a fine addition to the series.

Colby was looking for something different

I've read most of the stories in this series, our of order. This is an enjoyable, stand alone, done in one story about a Military Vet who is struggling in civilian life. He knows is looking for something, but until he met Mal in a previous story he had no idea what he might need.. honestly he still doesn't know what he might need, he just knows that things start to feel right when he works with Mal.

The story has some interesting scenes about power dynamics among other things.

Not so domme.

This story has the potential to be very thought consuming but alas falls somewhat softly to the wayside. When we read books about a dominant, the sub is usually treated more severely than the sub is in this book. The difference is that the sub here is a man . I was hoping to read a plot where the domme was more dominant shall we say ? Well , anyhoo...I'm off to read something else...

Yay, finally Mal and Colby! A great story about two strong characters who have different life stories, but who are able to merge into a cohesive pair while retaining their essential characteristics. Love these strong women (read also the billionaire submissives) and equally strong men, who don't lose their masculinity in bowing to their mistress.

Very sweet book about two people who are damaged and find that, despite what it may look like at first glance, they are each what the other needs to heal and find love again. The writing is, as always, wonderful and the book is steamy, but also has a wonderful plot and characters that make up with central focus of the story.

Rather lovely story about H who has PTSD, struggling to find himself. The h is a Domme, and she sees his pain. He doesn't know about BDSM, assumes the h will want more than he can give. But to both their surprise she is very sweet, sees his struggles and finds a way for him to calm and meet both their needs. Loved it.

Sexy BDSM

This was a BDSM novel about a Dom Mistress and her new sub. Colby is a cop who is an ex marine with PTSD and self worth issues. Mal helps him with his issues and an unlikely relationship forms between them. It is a sweet story of their love with a HEA. No cliffhanger. This is the first story i have read by this author and not sure if I will be reading any more.

A very sweet romance with kink elements. Which is rather low-key, since Mal is "the Mistress of Dallas". But the actual kink practice is very low-key (which is in line with the rest of the series, and is not a bad thing). Colby is Marine and cop and tough. But his service has scarred his mind and soul, and Mal can heal him.

Anyways, an excellent romance.

An excellent book - gives a light, un-scary glimpse into an alternate lifestyle as well as an extremely socially relevant miitary problem - very emotional, has a LOT of " feels" - even made me tear up - great story line with multi-dimensional characters that you will care about.

Beautiful

Yet again, Joely bowls me away with her storytelling. I want to live in this world with Ma’am and soldier boy - this is heartfelt, with characters that jump off the page and a love that feels real.

This author is amazing when it comes to an accurate representation of the BDSM community. This book kind of barely has a plot, but it doesn't really need one, either. It's a love story and it does a good job of that, and this whole series is a perfect antidote to the bad BDSM books out there.

I love me some Fem Dom w/a strong sub and this book has it to the max! I’ve read this whole series and enjoyed all of them but this is my favorite. Highly recommended if this is your thing.

Mal finally gets her story. She is the big bad Mistress. Can she break a cop, ex soldier. Can he bend to her will and become her submissive? A great story!
