Dr. Tala Matapang thought the most challenging part about getting kidnapped by slavers from another planet would be escaping, not butting heads with the obstinate Star Guardian captain who rescued her. She’s been working in his sickbay, and it's refreshing not having to deal with the politics and bureaucracy she faced as a surgeon back home, but Captain Sagitta is as infuriating as he is handsome. He's got this crazy plan to take her and the other women home against his government's wishes, and he didn't even consult them about it first.
Captain Sagitta "Sage" of Dethocoles believes in doing the right thing. That's why he's defying his government to take Tala and the other Earth women home. Unfortunately, he has a couple of problems. First, his government is sending a surprisingly aggressive pursuit after them. Second, he’s having a hard time imagining dropping Tala off and never seeing her again. She’s a capable doctor and is doing an excellent job heading up his sickbay. More than that, he’s attracted to her and is starting to care about her. Too bad he’s better at barking orders than sharing feelings, and he seems to argue with her every time they speak.
With trouble stalking the ship from behind and obstacles blocking the route ahead, Sage and Tala will have to form a bond and learn to work together, or neither of them will see their home worlds again.
The Star Guardians Series
Book 1: Orion Book 2: Treyjon Book 3: Sagitta Book 4: Hierax (August) Book 5: Zakota (fall)
I admit to being a little let down by this book. I've read the others in the series, and leading up to this point, Capt. Sagitta (Sage) and Dr. Tala were my favorite characters. Their romance was the one I was waiting for. Seeing the starch leech out of their shirts was going to be serious fun. Unfortunately, the romance was flat, and the sexual tension was limp. This book folded in the heart department, but excelled in the fight scene department.
I was really looking forward to how the push-pull between two dedicated-to-their-work, mature adults would shake out in an outer space atmosphere. To this point, the level headed ones in the room have been Sage and Tala. I couldn't wait to see how Lionsdrake was going to shake up their world. First off, I was disappointed that their attraction didn't unfold in little moments and big moments, flirts and insults. Instead, we spend so much time in Internal-Monologue-Land, replaying a few incidents from the last books, that I was BORED. And a little insulted out how lazily the romance angle was being handled.
Then, 58% into the book, RL saves it with the tension of a Zi'i assault. Suddenly I am absorbed in the story. Sage and Tala save the day in dramatic ways very worth reading. Sage saves the day with both his strategic battle skills and his one-on-four hand-to-hand combat that kind of reminds me of a guy in an MMA octagon cage with four crazed creatures. It was awesome. Plus, Tala's brains and intuition are much to admire. The story has twisted in an unexpected way, and there are a few more romances I want to see. However, I won't be so forgiving with another lazy romance. I want as much tension and excitement in the romance as with the laser fire and en-bolts and animal claws.
Sagitta is the second intriguing book in the Star Guardians series. I felt a little let down with this book. I would have liked to see more romantic interaction between these two characters. I know they are private people, but I wanted more.
She was a good surgeon, but was let down by the higher-up. Getting kidnapped and waking up in a strange place is bad, but it's even worse when you are in the hands of Aliens. But then you end up in the hands of humans who do not even live in your galaxy; things get interesting. Being shoved into being the doctor on an alien ship, not knowing their medical equipment, seems like an impossible task.
There is plenty of action, danger, and violence. It is also sexy, has chemistry, and humour.
Got a few hours spare, then grab a book and get stuck in.
I like this writer but I found this particular book slow and quite boring. I just didn't connect to the characters or storyline. I'll read more of this writer's work but no more in this series.
The third book in the Star Guardians series by Ruby Lionsdrake. Dr. Tala Matapang is one of the many women that were kidnapped by slavers. Captain Sagitta has requested her help since the previous ship's doctor died. The captain is disobeying orders and is taking the women home.
There are a lot of interesting characters in these books and it has been fun getting to know them. The captain may be the only sane member of his crew it seems. I didn't really feel the romance much in this one. Yes, it was there but I didn't really connect with them as I did with the previous couples. Too much going on for the captain to really get his groove on. Anyway, they say their "I love you's" but again the story is not over.
Highly anticipated this book and was not disappointed! The story continues with Sagitta (Sage) disobeying orders from his High Command and escaping Dethocles with the women where High Command decided they wanted the women to stay. Sage ends up having to navigate Falcon 8 through the Cronos Nebula that alters everyone's regular personalities. He entrusts Tala with keeping everyone mostly sane and safe, including himself because she's come up with a way to reverse some of the effects. From there there are more Zi'i encounters as Sage tries everything in his power to honor his promise. I think this is definitely my favorite book. There was a great balance between the plot and the romance. Sage and Tala have had this sort of slow burn chemistry since Book Orion. Sage is the tough, no nonsense workaholic and Tala, who's past life was a surgeon, sees a lot of who she used to be in Sage. It's one of those attractions that I felt Ruby executed beautifully. I hope we get a revisit between these two in a later book and I can't wait for the next one considering the people of Falcon 8 are not out of the woods quite yet.
I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
Uptight (according to this brother, at least) Captain Sagitta is on deck this time around and he's got his eye on the focused doc. No worries, she's got some eyes on him, too. Sexy, sexy eyes, if you know what I mean.
But before they get to the sexy times, Sagitta and Tala have to get through the danger they're facing. When we last left them, Sage had made the decision to defy orders and take the earth women back to their planet no matter what the ruling council says. As if that's not enough to worry about, they also run into an unexpected (and supremely unpleasant) surprise as they take a roundabout way back to the Gaia gate.
Despite all that, they find a few stolen minutes for romance. Sort of. It takes a while for both Sage and Tala to admit they like verbally sparring with one another and there *might* have been an inadvertent peep show to help move things along. Which just goes to show you should lock your doors if you need some alone time. Heh.
Tala's scientific know-how is put to the test, Sage gets to show his badass side when they come up against humanity's worst enemy, and the crew and ship and left in a very precarious position after all is said and done. I'm not worried, though, because Sage has a solid crew under him and the drive to get things done. Plus, those earth ladies aren't ones to give up easily. Just you wait and see.
This series keeps getting better and better! Amazing, isn't it?
Here comes the problem: honorable to his core, Sagitta must choose between loyalty to his superiors and protecting the innocent. Must have been a very tough, heart-rending decision to renounce his position and life-long commitment to his career and his beliefs in order to do what's right...
Go on, pick up this story of how the universe plays with fate and his heart becomes involved in this tale of heroism, sacrifice, honor and emotions - you'll love it!
Warning: while Orion and Treyjon have a satisfactory conclusion, the end of Sagitta will surprise you with a bit of a twist at the end. Ha! I can't wait for the next book!
The best about this series is the actual sci -fi story that is the main thread. Of course having a new erotic love story for each new book is also very enjoyable, especially since although the sex scenes are hot these are not the main point of the book. I like to be surprised by where the book takes me and I like it to be believable, this book check all of these points and more. The fact that the 2 couples for the 2 previous book are also part of the adventures and contribute a little is good too. Now am looking forward to book 4 as I really want to know what is going to happen to that ship and crew + women...
Of the Falcon 8. Who 3 week mission is to return the women of Earth home and return for punishment. However like all good books the mission doesn't go as planned and becomes an adventure of a life time.
I hope this isn't the trend for my ratings of this series. This one is the most boring of the three books so far. I found myself dozing off while reading this, in the middle of the day. Not a good sign. Hopefully the next one will be better.
Rarely is the 3rd in a series the best of the series but somehow Ruby has managed to get better and better with each book.
I'm literally there. On the Falcon 8. In the hallways. Holding my breath.
This story is so riveting I had to force myself to slow down and read every word instead of skimming quickly to see what happens. The desperation to know what's going to happen next was extreme!
The book has ended and frankly I don't know what to do with myself. My head's still in the Falcon 8 standing next to Tala and Sage but my body is currently doing laundry and dealing with kids.
Super entertaining in a purest form! No matter what that meant. Loved the various worlds. Loved that humans were scattered and thrived, or not, all over the galaxies. I even enjoyed so many scientific words or imaginary words created by the author, words I couldn't pronounce, words I had only vague clues what they meant. Loved the way the story ended; defeated the Aliens & got the girl, which in this case, got the Doctor.
I enjoyed super cool fight scenes, and fun interactions among the Star Guardians, the guests, and even with the enemies "the Zi'i warriors"! And yes, Sage & Tala were pretty hot together. I'm currently rereading the next book Hierax now! Fun to the max!
This picks up where the 2nd book left off. A bit of a summary; because while each book covers a different couple, the story-arc continues. In book one, aliens have found (accidentally from the sound of it) Earth (Gaia). Bad thing is, these aliens were slavers who kidnapped humans, aliens and sell them. There is an alien race called the Zi'i that love the taste of human flesh, and these slavers assist them with procuring their preference of meat. Enter the Star Guardians. They are the intergalactic police force. They rescue and arrest the kidnappers. The first book was Orion (a bounty hunter working with the SG) and Juanita (one of the women). The 2nd book is Angela (she worked at an animal shelter with dreams of becoming a dog trainer & had an unconventional upbringing) and Treyjon's (a SG whose specialty of training svenkars; think dog-like, but bigger and more lethal) story. The story-line progresses. There is an issue with returning to Earth. Some in the coalition do not want to make their presence known. There is also worry of other groups taking advantage of Earth's resources (in this case, the people). This book is Sage (the Captain) and Tala's (a surgeon on earth) story. Sage has defied orders and left to return the women to Earth. On the way, they encounter the Zi'i who may or may not have an alliance with another alien race (the Scyllan). The Scyllan are fairly unknown and have not been interested in alliances with the human contingent. They barely escape and end up in an unknown & unexplored part of the galaxy. Tala and Sage have a HFN ending (the romance was weaker in this one IMO & is was slow until the Zi'i made an appearance) and a bit of a cliffhanger ending.
I am a Lindsay Buroker fan, which means I also read her books as Ruby Lionsdrake. The difference? Lindsay Buroker could go 11 books in the Emperor's Edge series without the h/h doing more than occasionally mentioning they might be attracted to each other. In the Ruby Lionsdrake books the sex is definitely on the hot side in each and every book. But since LB dreams up unique plots and writes just about the best action scenes going, her Ruby Lionsdrake books are worth reading, even you're not in it for the sex scenes. Actually, I skim the sex scenes rather than page through them, because the dialogue can be sassy and not to be missed.
In the Star Guardians series, Ms Lionsdrake does something not seen very often in SyFy, except inalien-invasion tales like Independence Day. This series mixes ordinary, 21st century American women with human and alien life forms found elsewhere in our galaxy. Basically, in Book 1, Orion, the women are kidnapped in Arizona by space pirates, to be sold as food for a nasty alien race. The Star Guardians rescue them, but it takes five books to get them home again. Meanwhile— well you do the math—forty young women and a ship full of men. This series could have gone on forever. I chose the third book, Sagitta, for review, because this is one where even the captain succumbs to an earthwoman's charms, but each of the five is worth a read. (All downloaded just before Hurricane Irma and read while I waited 8 days to get my Internet back.)
All in all, if you like SyFy, a good story, and interesting characters, you can't go wrong with either Ruby Lionsdrake or her alter ego, Lindsay Buroker.

Read with KINDLE UNLIMITED for an honest review. I paid for this!
So after not particularly enjoying the first book, I skipped to the third as I was interested in Sage's story. Here we have Dr. Tala and Captain Sage. I actually enjoyed this story a lot more. I think I just liked the characters more. Tala is a level-headed doctor, finding that after giving up medicine on Earth, here on a starship, she is starting to enjoy it again. I liked that. She comes up with good ideas and saves the day more than once with her quick thinking. I liked that Sage was a bit stiff and unbending. He is the captain after all. I was looking forward to seeing him thaw.
Why only three stars?
Well, in general, I think these stories are quite slow and the erotic element not as big as I would personally like. There is quite a lot of internal monologuing. There is quite a lot of space adventure action going on. I felt that was to the detriment of the romance. I looked forward to the two characters getting together. I wanted them to argue and gripe at teach other but come together during tense moments and have that delicious push/pull vibe you get with haters-to-lovers, but I felt that this was missing. It didn't give me the delicious build up I look for, so by the time they got it on I just wasn't really feeling it. But I did enjoy the story and I will probably read the others.
I read the Mandrake Company books last year, and was happy to find the author had written a new series. This is definitely NOT a stand-alone novel. Orion and Treyjon are required reading before this one.
While I didn’t write reviews for the first two books, I have to for Sage’s book because I adore Sage and Tala. They’re both strong characters that tend toward aloof and arrogant due to their positions. And while they do soften their exteriors a bit due to the circumstances of the novel, they do it without sacrificing their personalities or sense of self. The relationships flow organically, without any of the jarring melodramatic misconceptions that are the singular trope of most of the romance market.
The book is filled with humor, action, and a plot beyond ‘see female, must make her my mate’. I enjoyed the banter between the crew, and the characters she introduced. The series is planned (so far) for 5 books, but there are at least 4 more characters I want to see stories about.
Sage is the Captain of the Star Guardian Ship the Falcon 8. Stern and single minded doesn't begin to described this decorated Star Guardian. Tala was a Surgeon on Earth but quit because the powers that be didn't let her give common sense orders to her patients rather than just writing them a prescription or three.
These two worked together like oil and water, always arguing but to them this was foreplay. They're interested in each other but first they have to escape to take the women back to earth. Making it through the first Worm hole they discover an enemy that threatens them and all human kind.
Those Earth women who were captured and then rescued are still on the Star Guardian's ship. This time they are headed home but wouldn't you know - something dangerous changes the entire trip. While all of this is going on Dr. Tala Matapang and Captain Sagitta "Sage" of Dethocoles are still butting heads. Wonder if something more than disagreements are at the heart of the arguments. I love how SF writers often get political statements woven into their stories. Sagitta have one about medicine and how we often replace healthy living with pills. I loved it because I agree. I also really like the series. This is book three of a five book ark and we leave Tala and Sage with their HEA but the crew of the ship in trouble.
A sensational novel. My only problem is that her Star Guardians series books are just too short. Longer books please! Once again (also)Sagitta is a great sci fi book and I am eager to read the remainder of the series. I know Ms Lionsdrake that you are ending this series soon but couldn't you just use more of the characters, such as Bethany and Killer. I'm sure he could teach her a few lessons. How about bad boy Varros (did I spell that right?) Oh there are so many other characters I could think of that have popped up recently. What I guess I'm trying to say is that I absolutely love this series and don't want it to end otherwise I'll have to just keep reading the series until I have it memorized! Thanks again for the wonderful reads!
Yes, they’re stiff characters, but this was perfect
Sage and Tala are the perfect representation in Romance of similar characters needing each other. There is no way that stuff, formal, commanding Sage could ever have a romance with an opposites attract scenario and I certainly appreciate that Tala is enough like him to understand him. There is no way he would ever have a long term relationship with someone who got butthurt every time he left without kissing her goodbye. Tala is the perfect match for him because she understands the need for professionalism in view of his crew. This was a great story. I loved it. Dry humor abounds and makes me a little giddy. Plus! I her Heirax next!
A bit more measured romance this time around, as we're dealing with more mature characters who have larger responsibilities - ship's captain and erstwhile doctor. Several more wrenches get thrown into the mission to take the kidnapped women back to Earth, and we're left with a cliffhanger in terms of their situation - Tala and Sage do get a HFN! It's a bit late in coming, but their banter and actions build over the course of the story.
We're also introduced to some new members of the Falcon 8's crew, and a few of the captured women get more character development. Now I'm trying to guess who will get paired up with who!
Still loving this series! I especially like seeing the whole situation from the Captain's viewpoint and that of the Tala because both are authority figures - the Captain more so since this is his spaceship, but Tala too since she is the one able to take care of all the injured after each battle keeping everyone fit for the next problem that arises. Both are reserved and unused to people questioning their authority, so it makes for some great banter/sparks between the two. So much happens in each of the books and the story just keeps moving forward at a nice pace... can't wait for the next book!
Sagitta is book three in the Star Guardians series by Ruby Lionsdrake, and closely follows books one (Orion) and two (Treyjon). And it's my favorite so far. The romance part of the plot takes a bit of a second place, but the science fiction/adventure story is very much worth reading - non-stop action, a bit of suspense thrown in, and it will be hard to put this book down once you truly jet into it.
Of course, as seems to be the norm with this series, Sagitta should not be read as a stand alone (you need the background from the previous books) and ends at another cliffhanger of sorts - which means that you need to move on to book four in the series.
I am enjoying the series as these women try to find t h sir way home after being abducted from Earth. The female characters are each strong in their own way. I also like the diversity in the characters. Kudos to the author for having all kinds of heroines.
This particular story is about Dr. Tala who is a no nonsense character; all business, do not stop on the return trip home. Now she is slightly softer in that she found her match with the no nonsense, by the book captain.
I jumped into the series on the third book, and while it references the store is the come before it it can be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot was OK, but what really made this story pop was a worthy adversary. The aliens that they fight are so horrible and easy to hate that it propels the rest of the story along. I enjoyed the sexual tension between the captain and doctor and was very pleased to watch the relationship develop. Although there was not a lot of sex in this book, there was enough other action to make it fast-paced and fun to read.
Ms Lionsdrake has totally hit her stride in the Star Guardians series with Sagitta. It is absolutely the best one yet with Dr Tala Matagang and Captain Sagitta making sparks fly from the get go! The pacing was solid, the romance good, the action scenes are well thought out and executed - plus we get to see what a total badass Sage is in a fight!! A really enjoyable romp through space and I’m looking forward to seeing where we end up with this series. Bring on number 4!
This is my first book by this Author, but it won't be my last. I'm normally very wary reading a new author in the SF romance genre, simply because most of them seem to get it confused with the Erotic fantasy. Abduction, slavery, and domination has nothing to do with love and even less in romance. Thankfully RL is one of the Authors that understands that and while abduction is in this story it's not by the H and the h has all the power and the choice to pick her own path and future.
I have read this series of books numerous times. The interactions between all the guardians with their captain and each other are entertaining. Their quips in times of stress or their daily lives constantly bring a smile to my face. And......I love the underlying concept of the mysterious Wanderers. I wish Ms. Lionsdrake had written more books along these lines but alas none have surfaced. Hence, I re-read what is available.
