Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is the first book in the new cozy Rose City Mystery series. The series is set in Portland, Oregon where Britta Johnston has returned home to the aunt that raised her and taken a job in her floral boutique, Blooma, along the banks of the Willamette which gave the setting a lovely small town feel to it.

Britta had just found out that her husband had been cheating which gave her the push to leave the marriage that she knew she hadn’t been happy in for quite a
Britta Johnston was pleased to be home – back in the town she grew up in, with the aunt who raised her. Aunt Elin owned the floral boutique – Blooma – in the Riverside district of Portland where all the shop keepers were friends and supported one another in a variety of ways. Britta’s gift was creating bouquets, while roses were her speciality. Aunt Elin welcomed her niece with open arms.

When the body of a real estate developer was found – by Britta – murdered in their boutique, the local detec

I am a fan already! This mystery pulled me in immediately and didn't let go of me until the end. One of my most favourite series are Kate Dyer-Seeley's Pacific Northwest Mysteries and I felt just right at home with the setting being again in Oregon a state which I have yet to visit.

After she finds out that her husband is cheating on her, Britta leaves him and goes back home to Portland to live and work with her aunt Elin in her flower shop. Flower shop themes are not new to the cozy mystery gen

Sometimes you just connect with an author’s writing style immediately. Sometimes you connect with the main character of a cozy from the very first book. Other times you connect with the relationships depicted, the setting described, the chosen careers of the character or the way the suspense is built. And sometimes, it all just clicks and the book is deeply enjoyable. Happily, Natural Thorn Killer was one of those books that just clicked with me on so many levels. The characters are well-rounded ...more

This is the first book in the new Rose City Mystery series. Britta Johnston has returned to Portland, Oregon after she discovers that her lazy husband has been cheating on her. Her Swedish Aunt Elin owns Blomma, a specialty floral design shop complete with a wine bar. The local shopkeepers are very close. During a Merchant Association meeting, the developer Frank Jaffe has offered a million dollars as a one-time buy out offer but they all must agree. The next morning, he is found murdered in the ...more

I was sufficiently engaged to read the next book in the series.

I think the author tried to stuff too many "trends" into this, wine, coffee, Portland setting. One would have been enough.

As a botanist/florist/horticulturist, I appreciated all the flower details, although I did catch a couple of errors.

My one big complaint--which is a complaint for a lot of cozy mysteries--is how odd it is that someone finds a violently murdered dead body, and is back to making flower arr

I had the pleasure of reading Natural Thorn Killer a new book by Kate Dyer-Seeley yesterday. This upcoming Kensington release slated for March 27th, centers around Britta who leaves a loveless marriage and returns home to her aunt's flower shop just in time for her aunt's flower cottage opening. Just days before the big event, Britta discovers the body of a local developer at odds with Britta's aunt has been murdered inside the cottage. Britta is desperate to help her aunt open on time and will ...more

I am a fan of this author and her writing style so I was happy to see a new series debuting. Natural Thorn Killer is the first in the Rose City Mystery series and is set on the Pacific Northwest - Portland specifically. It is a quick fun read that has a cast of wonderful characters that will draw the reader into the story. Britta is returning home after the end of her marriage and reconnecting with the aunt who raised her. I like Britta and found myself rooting for her character to regain her co ...more

Kate Dyer-Seeley has taken us back to Oregon in this new series and again she has written a cliff hanger of a mystery that keeps you turning the pages. Britta has spent the last few years supporting her husband who is writing a book, she has had to put her own artistic talent with flowers on hold whilst he has the latest writing toys etc, when she discovers he has been doing in depth "research" with another woman Britta ups, packs and heads home to her Aunt Elin (also her guardian in times past ...more

Once again, Kate Dyer-Seeley/Ellie Alexander has created a gem of a story. Everything I love about her writing is there -- the great characters with their heartfelt relationships, the great storyline, the stumping mystery, and the cozy setting.

My only complaint is that this was an ARC, and the book isn't due out for 2 more months... which means the wait for #2 is going to be a very long one, and I"m dying to know what will happen.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves flowers, cozies, a bit of

Kate Dyer-Seeley AKA Ellie Alexander can do no wrong in my opinion!I have never read a book by her that I didn't like.

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is a great start to a new series. I am a huge fan of Ellie Alexander, so when I realized that she also writes as Kate Dyer-Seeley, I was beyond thrilled.

Britta, the main character, returns to her home town of Portland after a tumultuous marriage. Returning home to her Aunt Elin unleashes the designer in her and her floral creativity took my breath away. The author describes Britta's floral designs in such vivid ways, that I could see and smell her creatio

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley was an excellent begining to this new cozy series.

I admired Britta when she moved back to Portland. She's so much stronger than she thinks she is and her character is evolving in this first book. I can relate to some of her feelings as she makes the decision to move home to "find herself". Ms. Dyer-Seeley's descriptive writing of Portland and the flower arrangements made me feel like I was there in the shop and cottage. The story line flowed, the pacing o

Britta, la protagonista, indaga facendo qual ...more

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Great start to this new series. Britta has moved back home to and decides to help her Aunt at the flower store as she opens a new addition. Just as they are gearing up for the grand opening they find a dead body in the shop with them being the main suspects. Well of course she has to start asking question to find out what really happened. Instead she find a bunch of secrets and puts herself in danger. Th

A florist with a second chance that’s based in Portland, Oregon? Heck, yes! I’m so excited about this new cozy mystery series.

My favorite part of this book is the relationship between Britta & her Aunt Elin. That’s one of the reasons I love cozies. Readers met these phenomenal characters & we

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't a heavy mystery story, it was more about relationships and flowers. I liked the characters. I think it would be fun to see how this series continues with the characters. I've always loved flowers and if I was good at it, I would probably own a flower shop, alas, I'm not. I found this entertaining.

This is a new series by Kate Dyer Seeley. Its centered on a floral shop in Portland and the main character comes back to help her aunt run it after leaving her unhappiness in her relationship behind. The main character, Britta, has a gift in creating beautiful floral arrangements, and everything about designing flowers is just what she needed--until a dead body shows up in her aunt's flower shop. Now she must deal with a cop eager to pin it on her and her aunt, plus hold the business together an ...more

The First Rose City Mystery

Britta Johnston lives a lackluster existence in Minnesota working at a mind numbing wholesale florist company to support her husband who's been writing the great American novel for years. When she discovers he's cheating on her, she stops kowtowing to him, packs her bags, and returns to Portland, Oregon and the aunt who raised her. The timing is perfect for Aunt Elin as she's getting ready to launch a new part of her floral bouti

I was drawn to this new series by its setting. Portland - and the Pacific Northwest - are favorites of mine. Add flowers, especially roses, the flower that gives the city its nickname, the Rose City, I was hooked. The characters are well developed and fit their setting perfectly. Britta has a talent for flower arranging and roses but she has not been able to follow her passion, stuck in a ho hum job in a floral warehouse and fully supporting her dead beat husband. When she finally snaps, she pac ...more

The Sloan Krause series makes me want beer (not really a stretch 😏), the Bakeshop series makes me want to bake, the PNW series makes me want to hike, and this Rose City series makes me want to BUY ALL THE FLOWERS. 🌷💕😍 The mystery was intriguing enough to make me wonder about people and motives along the way, Britta’s ...more

While this book is in the cozy mystery category it is so much more. Unlike other cozy mysteries it has more character development and story line. Britta moves back home to Portland after discovering her husband is having an affair. She goes back to her roots at her Aunt’s flower shop. Just days after she arrives a man is murdered in the shop. What I liked was that she didn’t think that she had to find the killer on her own because she thought the police couldn’t handle it. An enjoyable read.
Kate Dyer-Seeley's Natural Thorn Killer introduces the reader to Britta Johnston who has left her cheating husband back in Minnesota and returned home to Portland to join her aunt Elin, and help with Elin's flower shop, Blooma. She's settling in nicely, getting ready for the grand opening of Elin's expansion into the cottage next door, when she stumbles upon the dead (and murdered!!!) body of real estate developer Frank Jaffe. Lots of suspects in the trendy Riverplace Village, but Ms. Dyer-Seele ...more
