It does just what it says on the tin, at about a second grade level, with several sentences per page and big illustrations. It's also a good example of perspective -- although there are attempts to include other parts of the globe, especially in the prehistoric sections, it's mainly a history of European exploration. Europeans who go places are explorers, but we don't hear about people from other places going to Europe.

I quite liked this - it covers a variety of explorers, from the journeys of Polynesian people in the South Pacific to current missions to the International Space Station and Mars. It gives a special shout-out to female explorers, but also includes several photos and accounts of women throughout the text.

Good stuff. Doesn't get into the grim side of conquest, which I guess is good. We do have this though -- "Many people in the past thought women should not explore. But women were brave travelers, too." Yip yip!
