Nels Ondane, breaking his back working from dawn to dusk for his uncle, a rigorous employer, dreamed of going West to claim some free land; but his uncle objected to traveling to what he considered heathen country. The news was received that the uncle's only brother had died, leaving everything to the two surviving Ondanes as the next of kin. But to inherit they had to go to the dead man's last resting place, wherever that might be, to erect some sort of marker above his grave. It seemed a reasonable if slightly unusual request and, startlingly, the estate amounted to a considerable ten thousand dollars.
