These two examples of Gothic literature, The Italian, by Ann Radcliffe and Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen, are each acknowledged classics in their own right, but as presented here they offer a rare insight into women's literature--and lives--in the 19th century.
A really interesting duo-read, putting Northanger Abbey into context as a satirical comment on the popular Gothic novels of her time. Best to read the Introduction after the two novels to avoid the spoilers within.
