Fledgling militia officer Tommy Thaxton is used to scavenge missions in the ruined city. He’s not used to being in charge of his team of young men…but he can handle it. They all can handle it. It’s just a simple scavenge mission.

Until things go horribly wrong, and Tommy’s team finds themselves facing a full-scale gang attack – something their superiors never anticipated.

Now, getting home on schedule is the least of Tommy’s worries. Getting the entire team home alive is much more important.

White Mesa Chronicles

Fifty years after the collapse, the gangs fight in the waste of the city for survival and resources, while a rising city-state tries to define its own version of “progress.”

It’s safer in White Mesa – the place that saw it coming. There, a God-centered worldview encourages personal responsibility and the value of human life…all human life…even the zombies.

While each book is intended to stand alone, the series chronology is as follows:

Soldier

Zombie (coming 2017)

Gladiator

Great story!

I have to admit, I didn't realize there were zombie-like infected humans in this book, and I may not have picked it up if I did. But it was handled quite tastefully and was not the central part of the story.

A post-apocalyptic story. Civilization as we know it has fallen (some time ago based on characters' knowledge of how things used to be). The surviving humans have formed into "gangs" who scavenge the ruins of cities to survive.

After his captain gets injured, young sergeant Tommy is put in charge of a simple scavenging mission. But it seems this mission is doomed to failure. Tommy will have to find a way to lead his young soldiers in the face of opposing gangs, feral humans, missing team members, and mechanical issues.

Tommy was a great character. He is tough as nails, but not cold-hearted. He clearly has training and leadership experience, but he is pushed to the limit on this mission. I was proud of him for making decisions and owning up to the consequences, and although he is mature for his age, he clearly still has a lot to learn about leadership and working with people.

The minor characters weren't fleshed out very much and at times I found it hard to picture them, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment because this story is really about Tommy. There were also a few moments in the middle of the action where I got lost. But the important stuff was clear, and a lot of it was rehashed later.

I loved the setting of the story and the gritty, urban feel to it. It reminded me of "I am Legend" but with more people, or the people-politics of "Falling Skies" without the aliens.
