You can’t hide from magic when it’s in your blood …

When Allaigna was seven she almost sang her baby brother to sleep — forever. She may be heir to neither her mother’s titles nor her secrets, but she has inherited her grandmother’s dangerous talent for singing music into magic. As her education proceeds from nursery to weapons ground to the rank of royal page, it becomes i

Magic through music? Count me in! The compelling plot kept me hooked for hours! It was addictive.
More than anything, I loved reading about the strong female characters in this book. The characters each had their own flaws which made them more human and more realistic, and thereby added to their strength.

I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. I found the three main characters to be believable, interesting and nicely developed. At first, I found the changing timeline between the character stories a bit awkward but once there was some background laid out for each it became easier to navigate. Having each character tell their own story helped to make their motivations clear and gave a certain depth to the overall story that would have been difficult to achieve otherwise. Th ...more

Three heroines for the price of one!
Three female voices intertwine in concert, and I love them all. Allaigna is intelligent and passionate and I find myself wishing to hear her voice when I'm reading other fantasy novels (not a compliment to the other novels, that I'm wishing they were all Allaigna characters.) Carry on, and looking forward to the next in this series.

Author Landels knows her stuff. Whether it's horses, sword-fighting, or midwifery, the details and descriptions are well-chosen and convincing. And she makes magic out of music ... or music out of magic. Either way, it works.

Allaigna's Song: Overture weaves three stories together: daughter, mother, and grandmother. Set in a medieval world where royal women are married off for political reasons, where women with magic aren't as respected as old, male codgers reading spells from books, this story breathes a tale from all three female perspectives to tell the struggles they have to go through to chart their own paths in the world. A deliciously slow read that only picks up the pace halfway through, it is well worth the ...more

It's been a while since I got into any fantasy sagas and this was a lovely return to the genre. I quite enjoyed it. I had my usual challenge keeping the three storyline's crossovers straight for the first thirty pages or so but by the end was fully invested in all three. The protagonists are real and unromantisized and even their unlikeable moments are very genuine. I didn't feel the illustrations added much to the story but I can see their merit in the serialized installments the novel is built ...more

What a great read. The adventures never stop, the magic intrigues, and the heroine Allaigna is tough and appealing. So well written I couldn't stop reading. JM Landels brings horses, swords, and sorcery together in a terrific tale.
