J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
Moon Angel by J. R. Rain and narrated by Dina Pearlman is a great short. I have read this before but forgot what it was about until it started and I still didn't remember the details since it had been so long ago and I read so many books a . This was great. Vampire Sam calls the devil! He has demons on his side. What will Sam have to go up against the ultimate evil? Wow, really good! Narration was excellent! Keep the suspense up!
“Moon Angel” is book #14 in the Vampire for Hire series, not counting the many short stories and novellas that interweave with the main plot line….and which are extensively advertised throughout the main series. “Moon Angel” is also the conclusion of The Devil’s Triangle trilogy within the series. This review is based on the Kindle version; the audiobook is not yet released.
By now, everyone’s familiar with the story and the cast, so I’ll skip repeating all that. Much of the book continues to repeat ongoing reasons for eyerolls as we read.
• Samantha continues commenting on her son’s skid marks everytime she does laundry; that’s all I think about whenever he’s mentioned despite his new superpowers….continued ewwws.
• Tammy is still annoying….but less so.
• Anthony and Kingsley continue to amaze everyone by eating lots.
• Allison and Samantha continue to sound like 13yo’s at a sleepover
Unique to this book is the storyline of Samantha fighting the devil, and meeting archangels. It’s okay, lots of battle action, but overall the series has really lost the heart of what made it so great at the beginning. Initially, we could emphasize with Samantha, forced into being a vampire and struggling to live her life as best she could.
Now, the series is like those Marvel Avenger group movies - lots of CGI but no personality.
I read this book because I didn’t want to leave the trilogy unfinished, but I didn’t want to pay for the audiobook whenever it comes out. As a Kindle Unlimited book I was able to wrap up this series. I don’t plan to continue with #15 through a billion whenever they’re released. Early books were often 4* or even 5*. This one concludes with a 3* - meh.
The “Vampire for Hire” series used to feature a wisecracking, ass kicking minivan mom who investigated cases for clients and fought evil in her spare time. This book was missing all of the Samantha moon flavor. There was no wisecracking, except for the obligatory reference to Anthony’s body odor, probably the most expendable trope in the series. Kingsley wasn’t in this book except for about two minutes. Is he even a werewolf anymore? Despite this being a “Vampire for Hire” book, Samantha takes on no cases. This book went way too into the supernatural. Too many hissing mind’s eye weirdness and not enough Samantha Moon. The formula has changed and I’m just not into it anymore.
Moon Angel (Vampire for Hire Book 14 -- and 3rd in the Devil's Triangle Trilogy) by J.R. Rain.
Disclaimer: Some spoilers
Another Samantha Moon novel, another great read.
In this episode, Samantha must face the choice of becoming forever committed being an assistant to The Death Angel or face the destruction of everyone she cares about by the Devil. Her daughter, Tammy, has inadvertently made a mindlink with the Devil, and her only hiding place is a small area of her mind she has blocked off. But the Devil is persistent, and determined to conquer that guarded space in order to use Tammy in his quest to destroy Samantha. As Samantha explores her options with Archibald Maximus, and eventually, with the Angel of Death himself, her family and Allison have moved in with Kingsley for safety. When Samantha returns from her training with the Angel of Death (Azrael), the Devil has broken through Tammy's protected corner of her mind and begins his all out attack. Will Samantha, with her new weapons provided by Azrael, Kingsley in his wolfed-out form, Anthony as Fire Warrior, Allison with her witchcraft, and all of Kingsley's Frankenstein-like servants be able to defeat the Devil, his 3-headed Hell Hound, and a host of demons? Yeah. You gotta read the book.
Lots of action. Tons of action, in fact. Great looks at not only Samantha's growing powers, but at the nature of the dark masters themselves, at Anthony's Fire Warrior, at Tammy's growing powers, and, of course, Kingsley and Allison. Judge Judy gets mentioned a few times (gotta love that!). Good proofing and editing ( I did find two errors, one at 579 on my Kindle and one at 684). Good pacing and flow.
So, wasn't there anything I didn't like. Sure. A little too much religion stuff for my taste, but it worked in the storyline, so I can get by that. I did notice this very (I hope) tongue and cheek bit: at 724, when Archibald is explaining the libraries light source -- "God light" -- he indicates there is such a light in hidden chambers around the globe, such as the Vatican and in a chamber under the White House. I had to laugh. That light must be sputtering out about now, I'd think.
OK! I swore I was not going to get another book in the Vampire for Hire series and then a new one comes out and I feel a compulsion to read it. The heroine, Samantha Moon, is an everyday detective and mom who happens to be a vampire. I've been following her story since Book 1. But, the narratives are repetitive and too wordy. I could wait longer for a book in the series if that is what it takes to make it more concise. I know Samantha's nickname is Sam, but does it have to be repeated in every line of dialog? The case mysteries in the series are now in written about in a separate series. So, now Vampire for Hire is about Sam, her children and friends, defeating various degrees of evil. The metaphysics and spiritual references are interesting but I miss the the casework. I'm not willing to read a separate series not written by JR Rain (I tried) to get the mystery. For those of you new to Vampire for Hire series, it's been a good read.
Wow, is there a lot going on in this book. If you're reading the series, this is one you just CANNOT skip because this is a huge turning point in Sam's life, another change. She is becoming more than just a vampire but I can't say what- even if I wanted to ruin the surprise. Not sure what to call her now. But she's definitely a being no other supernatural being would want to take on. All that being said, I was a little disappointed in this book. It seemed more sci fi with all these beings showing up. I kind of liked it when it was just Sam the vampire, Kingsley the werewolf and Allison the good witch. However, no one does a great story like JR Rain and tells it so smoothly that you wish you were part of the action. This is one of my favorite series and I'm really hoping for it to get back to the basics for the next book.
Every wonder why people say, "you made a deal with the devil? " well for Samantha and her family it seems just that. They can't shake him but he can shake them in more ways than one. Cunning , devious and cleaver this devil has it bad for the Moon family . This book will have you on the edge of your seat. A rollercoaster of a story. Dive in to discover what Sam has planned for the devil, if she can keep it a secret. I have been reading this series since the beginning and have not been disappointed. Rain gives a real life feel to his characters and you come to love each and every one of them. Can't wait for the next book. This is a must read series.
This was such a great addition to this series and in my opinion, one of the best Mr. Rain has written. For some time now I've been getting more and more irritated with Tammy and her sassy mouth, not to mention Samantha's leniency with her. This is the first time in a long time I've actually been able to feel any compassion for the child I was considering the biggest brat in existence. Anthony's whole fire warrior thing is hella cool and I can't wait to see that explored more. A new character is introduced in Moon Angel and I don't want to give away spoilers, but it is an awesome character I hope we see a lot more of! This book had plenty of action, great dialogue, and some literal LOL moments, all combined to make a truly great read.
I read this entire 15-book (so far) series back-to-back for the last couple weeks, plus quite a few short stories that relate. Free on Kindle Unlimited. It's a great series for a fan of paranormal mystery. The set up is that a mom in California was changed into a vampire in an attack. Fast forward several years and she's struggling with a failing marriage and raising 2 kids with her day time disability. As the years progress, her marriage fails, her kids mature, and her relationships with love interests/ friends/family grow. The characters are relate-able, there's a little humor, and very entertaining mysteries with interesting treatments of magic. Solidly fun reading!
All that wait and the story went by too fast. After the short but exciting preparation Sam battles the Devil for her daughter’s soul and mankind’s freedom. It was good, has some interesting and cool moments but too easily concluded.
But I love Sam’s new role and abilities. Some interesting possibilities from them.
Footnote: 1) Did anyone else catch the reference to the movie ‘Frozen’ when Sam was talking herself into her plan to teleport?
Fave scenes: hiding the secret door, Allison’s dessert, the Corinthian hallway and Sam’s wings.
Samantha has to fight to keep the devil out of her daughter or die. She accepts the challenge along with the only sword that can kill him and his demons given to her from the Angel Azriel. She knows she can not do it alone and gets the help of some angels to train her to fight with the sword and fly with her new wings. She also gets help from Kingsley, Allison, and the Fire Warrior. What an exciting book. Bravo J. R.
Samantha Moon faces her biggest foe yet in this installment of the series. The Devil himself has targeted her children and Samantha will stop at nothing to protect them.
I read this and many other books from this series almost straight in one sitting. They are non-stop from beginning to end and nigh impossible to put down! Can't wait to hear what's next for Samantha and her unique group of family and friends!
Samantha Moon takes on her greatest adversary in a battle between the devil and Sam. With the help of the monsters, Kingley, Sam's son, the Fireman and of course, best friend Allison, the battle rages as the monsters and devil spawned evil shadow monsters fall victim to the good guys magic swords and fireballs. I love the action and the fact there's not victory without loss. This one kept the action moving. No dull lulls in this book.
Once again the author has gotten off about the devil .
At least there was a good story in moon angel but I am getting very tired about the devil thank goodness she ended the devil in this book because like I said it was getting boring. It seems this author has a fixation about the devil So I hope she is done fixing on that and can turn the story into something more interesting And not so dark
Moon Angel takes Samantha to a whole new level of awesomeness! In a final showdown with Satan, Sam is challenged to step into a role she never saw for herself. She rises to the occasion, and with the help of her exceptional friends, proves that a mother's fierce protectiveness and love can vanquish the heart of darkness. Can't wait to see where this leads.
Some worlds you just love and it is a joy to go back.
I read so many different types of books...just follow where series and curiosity takes me, and the bonus of that is when a new book comes out in a series I have read and enjoyed...it is like Christmas morning. Worlds within worlds.
Samantha Moon Rocks !!! I love all of her books, this was one of my favorites!!! I enjoyed this one so much!! Every time one of Samantha Moon books comes out, I always stop what I am doing to read her books !!! Definitely great series and books, I did miss the detective in this book !!!
Holy cow! An all out war of fighting the Devil and demons!! And angels wow wow, this had me laughing and angry at times but we did have an appearance of non other then Dang!! I still love him and wish Sam picked him. I like Kinsley the werewolf but it's fangs ugh I feel bad so many of the Frankenstein monsters died tho. So sad
So this one was about her saving her daughter from the devil. I wish she could save us all from him. I enjoyed listening to this book. She met New people and learned New things about herself. Which she used them to fight off the demons. Can't wait for the next chapter. Thanks
Like the series, but the cliffhangers get worse with each book. It is possible to leave people wanting more without it seeming like it ends in mid-sentence. I don't think I've ever read a book that just cut off like that.
If I were to give advice to anyone considering this series, it would be to wait until the whole thing is done so you can proceed directly to the next book.
This entire series satisfied my need for all things fantastical. Intense action and brings who battle for good or evil, this story is the ultimate war for humans in the real world, assisted by angels...or demons, depending on personal choice. I thoroughly enjoyed each book.
By number 154, you’d think this series would have jumped that infamous shark. Nope. This was one of the best. If anything, i’m more excited to visit my old friend Ms. Moon again as soon as possible. The books are a rare treat, especially with someone like me with the attention span of a hummingbird. And onward I go.
Holy S*** this one was almost impossible to out down!!!!
Sam, our heroine, has taken all that could be dished out at her and still has a JOB to finish.
She has gone through everything but he'll itself to defend her family and friends. Still there are things she needs to accomplish in order to get there..
Samantha Moor vs the devil. The devil fail to get Anthony, now he is after Tammy. Samantha want the sword thatbwull kill the devil. Can Samantha find the sword that will kill the devil and at what cost. Great story can wait for the next.
Great series, awesome writing and storyline. I have read every Samantha Moon book out there...they don't disappoint ! Gave this book 5 stars because I'm a huge fan and can't wait for the next book.
A lot more plot this time around. Family angst, a more daunting enemy, and the fulfilling of a destiny that the protagonist (and/or the reader) would never see coming! Very intriguing, definitely a game changer.
I used to really enjoy this series, but I am starting to find the writing extremely annoying. So much man-splaining, and that is just the beginning. I feel like very little effort went into this one. Meh.
What a way to end this book. I'm not going to give it away but this one takes the cake so to speak. I've so enjoyed this series Mr Rain and I'm sure the next book will also not fail.
Well another great book in the series ,I just love the characters and how they evolve! The storyline was good and lots of new exciting characters. She never disappoints ,her ability to keep you sucked in wanting more.
The devil will have his due but so will Samantha Moon. I loved it. This is an excellent ending to this trilogy. I can't believe how fast I read the last fourteen books. On to the next one.
