Sanat tarihçisi Catherine Ingram ile çizer Agnès Decourchelle’in bu kitaba özel illüstrasyonları, bizi Matisse’in parlak renkleri altında sanatının izini sürmeye çağırıyor.

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them”--Matisse

There are as of this date 16 “This. . .” board book art bios, both fun and smart introductions to various artists, and I have very much liked all of them I’ve read thus far. Many of the ones I have read were written by Catherine Ingram, as is this one, illustrated by Agnes Decourchelle. Very attractive, very inviting, with lots of information, from painting through cut-outs, which he did later in life, when he was ill, and the art so alive and colorful!

“I didn't expect to recover from my second operation but since I did, I consider that I'm living on borrowed time. Every day that dawns is a gift to me and I take it in that way. I accept it gratefully without looking beyond it. I completely forget my physical suffering and all the unpleasantness of my present condition and I think only of the joy of seeing the sun rise once more and of being able to work a little bit, even under difficult conditions”--Matisse

Many of his most celebrated pieces are reproduced here, too, from The Dance to Women with Monkeys.

“To look at something as though we had never seen it before requires great courage”--Matisse

I reviewed a Matisse book that focuses on his cut-out period, but especially see Ilse’s review:

Here we can see a range of the work of Matisse:

I absolutely loved this book. The illustrations are truly captivating and so stunningly beautiful. The layout of this book is so calming and really allows one to immerse oneself in the story of Matisse's life and practice. 'This is Matisse' has definitely heightened my appreciation of Henri Matisse.

“I Am Matisse” by Catherine Ingram is a biography of an artist that I grew up with. I first encountered Matisse’s artwork in middle school when I saw his painting “Icarus” on the internet while doing a project. There was something interesting about how the man in shadow is floating in the night sky with only his red heart being the sole eye-catching piece of the artwork. Since that moment, I would start researching and analyzing various Matisse works such as “Harmony in Red” and “The Cat with Red Fish”, which I love. The format of this book, similar to “I Am Dali” and “I Am Magritte”, tells Matisse’s life story in a short, impactful, interesting and creative fashion. I learned that Matisse sought inspiration for his works by traveling to places such as Granada, Russia, Morocco, Tahiti and even New York City. He loved New York City’s skyscrapers and Morocco’s field of flowers. I was impressed to learn that Matisse never gave up. Despite his marital troubles and health issues, he pushed forward to create new art forms and not stay in the status quo. I’m glad I learned more on Matisse’s life because it educated me on different ways artists reinvent themselves.

Interesting book about an Artist who was influenced by circus, NY, Tahiti, Russia and more. To be honest when we covered Matisse in The History of Art class I wasn’t a fan of him but after reading about his life and struggles he had, wars,... This book changed my view of him, and I am glad :) .

I'm not a fan of Matisse, but am I glad to have read this book. It's not packed with too much information, but it gives you the highlights. He was first drawn to textiles from his hometown, and he carried this with him until his final days. I also learned that Matisse was inspired by Henri Bergson's works on time and space (movement), who has been an influence in my own work, and that he traveled widely, picking up designs and images from Morocco, Spain, Russia, Tahiti, New York. His wife is also a key figure here, and though he is "pitted against Picasso as a lover and him as a family man," there are certain women/lovers described, as sketched and drawn by him. He also designed costumes for the Ballet Russes while in Russia. What struck me most was that he always held on to a shade of blue, from the sulphur flame when he burned his toy museum, to the blue morpho butterfly he bought.

I'd like to believe some people have that one color, a specific shade.

Luxury calm and plesure
The red studio
Odalisque with Magnolias

Concise and entertaining. Evokes the character of Matisse, the context and colour of his energetic life. However, as a reference it is difficult because of its frustrating downside: the dates for some key life events of Matisse are not clearly stated, so the chronology is not always crystal clear. For example, the text on page 6 says "In 1871, when Matisse was a baby", but does not say whether 1871 is his actual year of birth. Likewise, the precise date of his passing is not given. There are other instances throughout the book. The watercolour illustrations by Agnes Decourchelle are superb.

I had the chance to see the "Matisse in His Time" exhibition at the OKC Art Museum and I bought this book there. It is a short, but beautifully designed and manufactured book covering his entire life. I enjoyed it very much.
