For me this was one of those books you wanted to really like, but it just never got there for you...

For me this was one of those books you wanted to really like, but it just never got there for you... deep sigh, 1st I'll say that while this book was nowhere and I mean nowhere as good as the 2 books in the series,I was better then the last where the H was hateful and towards the h who was a complete TSTL doormat...
That said I just couldn't stand the h here,Willa to me felt like she was supposed to be the female equivalent of the stereotypical male rogue, who's a bit shiftless by handsome and charming and even though all he seems to do is scheme and manipulate everyone one around him for his own selfish gains , he's lovable and loyal and most of the time his schemes and machinations only see a to hurt him even if they do put his friends out, like I said he's handsome and lovable and charming soo he gets away with it....
Yeah Willa was that beautiful and she wasn't charming ,not the way she doesn't have the money to buy, these sentient creatures to protect her sorry butt p, when she plans to go steal back a priceless family heirloom she foolishly wagered in a game of chance ... she doesn't have the money soo she risks her love and that if her supposed bff to steal the pack humanoid type dog ish type aliens , who she later defends but stars off seeing as barely intelligent and kinda treats them as puppies to neglect ...
And while I oddly rooted for and Kyran to get together. I didn't like how it started, him mistakenly watching porn, her stupidly assuming he liked it and treating him like he was her stud there just for her pleasure, not really seeming to care what he wanted... knowing on some level even at the beginning he wanted to please her....
I can't say it was wrong per say,but it didn't feel right ,she owned him and between him being hot ya doing him wanting to please his "new owner" ,it just felt wrong to me...
But that's me,sighs, but we never saw Willa do anything on the ship that was useful,I never saw her do anything really but lie to any one and everyone from her brother to her best friend to her lover to her self, she did nothing but eat, sleep, duck and lie to everyone including herself....
Someone is always paying the cost of her selfish lies....
I couldn't stand her....
We all deserved better than her especially Her best friend Tosh and her lover the sweet and noble Kyran...
I'm just grateful this was KU, I love the 1st two books but the last two ? Don't even feel like the same person is writing them , where's the depth and the character ?

I Really expected more from Poppy. This book is too easy going. Heroin is questionable... Still entertaining. Action packed. Will review in a near future🤔

After the disappointment of The Yarian I was a little wary of approaching the next book in the series. However, oh ye of little faith! I should have known the Poppy Rhys could pull it back. The Khyma is part one of two of the Taken mini series within the Women of Dor Nye series. Like an episode of your favourite TV programme that ends on 'to be continued...' than concludes the following week.

This book focuses on Willa, a headstrong, fun loving girl, who doesn't always think things through. Which, is how she finds herself in a dodgy market looking to buy some Khyma, a race of alien bred to be protectors and slaves. She doesn't feel great about buying a slave, but she doesn't intend to keep them like slaves. However, things don't quite go as planned (as usual) as she realises that the trouble she is embroiled may have more far reaching consequences.

When I started this book, the whole "the heroine is buying slaves" thing didn't quite sit right for me. However, what helped was that Willa didn't really see them as slaves, it was like she thought she was hiring body guards. Guards she fully intended to treat like an employee and offer pay and opportunities. Willa is a hard heroine to dislike, she may be a handful but she's a lot of fun and clearly cares for those around her.

This story goes along fairly predictable lines, Willa falls for one of the Khyma, Kyran, and he likewise is fascinated and adores her. It feels very similar to the first two books in the series The Melier and The Melier: Homeworld. I loved it, Kyran especially managed to tug at the heart strings.

From a romance point of view, you do get a HEA at the end of the book, however, it does end on a cliffhanger, so make sure you have the next book in the series queued up and ready to read!

Oh, this was much too short! I absolutely love Poppy's books and her sexy, strange aliens! Kyran was adorable and seriously wished there had been more of him. This book so needed to longer! I loved the sweet, sincere interactions between him and Willa. Even after all he's known, he took that step, and took what he wanted. I would have loved to have seen more of his growth as he came into himself with his freedom, but sadly it ended too soon.

Tosh and Willa are funny as hell together and it's going to be torture waiting for the next book! Really looking forward to it!

Though the heroine had questionable moral focus at times, she was no shrinking violet and i liked it. And the red dude was hot. But i wish it had been longer and more about their interaction

Book 4 in the women of Dor Nye series.

This series just keeps getting better and better. The writing is brilliant and flows so well. The charachters are realistic and believable... they are likable.

I adored Willa and kyran...they had a lovely ( relatively ) uncomplicated story. Which was great after the wars between the couple in book 3 ( which I liked as well! )
Lots of adventure and comedy absolutely great read!!

Really looking forward to Tosh's book and the rest of this series as it grows and we meet more women of Dor NYe and their aliens.

Action packed steamy goodness.
Willa is a strong woman and she's determined to get back what was taken from her. She ends up stealing a pack of Khymas to act as her bodyguards. Kyran is confused as Willa doesn't behave like any other keeper he's had in the past. They both end up finding happiness...but Willa's friend Tosh pays the price.

Starting Tosh's story now...but I can't help wanting more details about the Khymas. They are so rare and mysterious...who created them, where do they come from...etc. Maybe we'll get answers eventually, I hope!

Not sure

I'm not sure if I like it or not. It was overall a decent read. Willa and Tosh were pretty tough on their own, but felt they needed some muscle to back them up to get a piece of jewelry, a family heirloom, that was cheated from Will a in some game of chance that had high stakes. Wether or not the Windell actually cheated, it was never confirmed. We get Willa's accusations, but no proof. The whole Khyma thing weirded me out. They start out as animals, basically naked and unable to communicate in anything but grunts and growls. Control chips to make them behave or they get shocked. They know commands, but it's later suspected those commands are just guesses because they have no idea what she says. The sexual relationship development needs more elaboration. The way it developed was too easy. It was structurally evolving over desperate want, and that's it. I would have loved to see more development in the characters.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I like that all the books can be stand alone. They're all unique... and have their own peak?

Page 1, I was hooked, just couldn't put the darn book down. This book had me real bad; pass my bed time. Can't complain - I like me a good read.

The characters were all likable and relatable - a major plus. Two badass women who took the storm by the horn. OK, I don't know what's up with me tonight.

The storyline was just- I can't even put it into words. It wasn't cheesy, that's for sure. The plot was reasonable. I would definitely search hell and back for any heirloom given to me too.

The cliffhanger though got me like...

I am not sure how I feel about this one.

On one hand,

The world building is very good

I did adore the heroine and her BFF Tosh.

However:
The two of them together did some pretty stupid crap.

Again the Alien is distinctly unsexy to me. He seemed to be a sweet guy inside but I found nothing about him attractive on the outside.

It was more than a bit insta-love.

I will continue the series.

Cute and short story. Willa and Kyran were adorable together. Willa was feisty and Kyran was mysterious and a fish-out-of water. I haven't read a lot of these type of SCI-FI romance but I found the story to be refreshing and different. I liked the details about the Khyma people. I wish it had been longer.

I made it to 40% and just couldn't go on anymore. Willa is reckless and thinks of no one but herself and getting her way. Lies constantly. Felt the story up to this part was juvenile. Skipping Taken Part Two and moving on to The Melier: Prodigal Son.

I See Red People👹👹👹

The Khyma👹: genetically designed guardians who are brutally efficient and loyal. They are tall, jacked💪, red aliens👹 with black hair and humanoid bodies and features✋🍌🌋. Parts is Parts!
Willa💋🔫🔪 needs some muscle👹💪 for getting back an heirloom necklace that she foolishly gambled away. She is going to get it back by stealing it back.
Willa💋🔪🔫 and her friend, Tosh💋🔫🔪, are from a family of traders, they travel space constantly and have their own developed trade routes, a ship and a crew.
They stop off at a backwater secret port to buy some alien muscle💪, and Willa sees the three Khyma males👹👹👹. They are always sold in multiples. She can't afford them, so she and Tosh attack the seller and steal the three red Khymas.👹👹👹
They are only too happy to get out of the cage and free. They speak an unknown indecipherable language, but they do understand Willa💋🔫🔪, their new owner.
Willa💋🔫🔪 finds herself drawn to one of the Khyma, Kyran,💪🍌🌋, and he is drawn to her but he's a virgin male🍌 and was never a breeder🍌🌋, so it's all new to him!
He's definitely a very. Fast. Learner.
YEHAW! Ride em Bareback🍌, Cowgirl!🐎🐎🐎🐎

This book is pretty wacky, sometimes funny, and just kind of strange and weird😵 at times. It gets better towards the end. The relationship between Willa and Kyran is actually very sweet with some truly wonderful moments.💓💓
Read with KINDLE UNLIMITED for an honest review. I paid for this.

not for me

truthfully,i think *my* enjoyment this series lessens with each book. if you love bad-arse heroines, this book if for you. willa is a kick arse fighter in SPADES. However, *i* really don't enjoy heroines hopped up on testosterone, but i will not one star a book for that. i prefer heroines like lucia, who use their brains. thus, i really didn't like willa. At all. in addition, she's a reckless hothead, which wouldn't be terrible if she didn't suck at it so much. she seems to constantly get caught. i liked kyran as one would like a puppy, but not as an alpha male book boyfriend. everything he did was literally because he was a pet and chipped, almost incapable of independant thought. she told him to "sit" and "stay" as one would a dog. this dynamic made it really uncomfortable to read. i didn't enjoy his lack of backstory. it seems as if he is from some puppy race specifically bred to be subservient. will there be another melier book, because i really liked those.

Different

Very different outlook in this book. For once there was no dominance in the male. Frankly, there was barely any personality to the leading male. He wasn't bred for personality, thought, or feeling, and had only barely begun developing any by the end of the book. Willa was definitely the dominant personality. Can't say I liked her much. She was sadly lacking in judgement and morals, and took advantage of Kyran in some pretty major ways. Her sense of right and wrong are severely twisted. There was very to redeem her. There was very little substance between her and Kyran and I found nothing enjoyable in reading about them. I'm glad her story is over, and frankly I'm not eager to read about her friend I the next book.

Potential

Willa and Kyran’s story has potential to be a unique and outstanding, and pushing boundaries love story.
In my OPINION (please no haters) felt like it would have excelled if
a) Willa was wrote as a newly discovered female Top and Kyran as a sub. Felt it hinted at it but didn’t deliver. With public appearance as her “protector”
b)Kyran “freedom” and newly discovered language ability would have spurred petition to get rid of “guard dog” species value and put in as independent new class of sentient beings.
C) her realization and confessions brother about her heirloom would have had her BROTHER go to party with her friend instead of her. Setting up not only her friends next story, but one for her Brother. (And No way would a bestie, leave without other.)

Entertaining 😊

I question some of Willa's decisions and moral. I found her to be shifty and manipulative at times. To me Willa's was the one in charge of the ship 🚀 and nothing else. She seemed to be a compulsive liar. It does cause for some interesting situations; but someone else seemed to pay the price. 😩

I enjoyed Kyran and Willa's interactions. Sincere and sweet. It felt wrong to me how they became to be together. I do understand. Language being a barrier.

Can't wait to find out how will they rescue her best friend from another situation she caused. 🤦

As far as rating it, I wouldn't know. I must admit I did enjoyed it overall.

At the start of the book, the MFC is abhorrent - selfish, reckless, foolish, and morally corrupt. Her life is a mess due to her own actions, and she's dragging others down with her. She makes one awful choice after another, digging her hole deeper and deeper. Now, Rhys works her usual magic, growing this immature young woman into someone looking to redeem herself, but i think she's going to need the entirety of the next book to set it all to rights.
The MMC is sweet but kind of one dimensional, so there's room to grow there.
I'm eager to get to the next book.

Entertaining and Imaginative

This author's series is a unique take on alien space opera, and probably a more realistic perspective that aliens would be different, physically and culturally. This book presents a dilemma, slavery of intellect beings being breed, trained and cared for like pedigree service animals. It made me sad for their culture and delighted that he and his brothers have a happy ending. Love this series and highly recommend it for those who want more realistic stories with action, strong female leads, and happy endings.

Mehh. With a cliffhanger ending..

Loved the first three books, this one not so much. The story was good, but Willa was not likeable as a heroine. She was spoilt, risky and disregarded others advice or property. Her only redeeming quality is that she freed the guys. But others were constantly paying for her mistakes. There was some humor and misunderstandings based on language difficulties, that made this ok to read. The cliffhanger ending means I'll go and get the next book to see what happens..

I've typed it before and I'll type it again about this author.

I love the way she portrays her world, the different aliens that are in it, and her writing style but always 1 of her main characters in each book is so unlikable that all I want to read is them regret being such a terrible person.

description

Which sadly didn't happen. The main character got away with everything thus making this book an unsatisfying read for me.

While I love this world, this was not my favorite book. Willa is very selfish and doesn’t really learn from her mistakes. Her first sexual interaction with Kyran gave me the ick too. From her perspective, she didn’t really know what level of consciousness and intelligence they had. They were constantly equated to dogs, so very much gave me an exploitative beastiality vibe. Kyran basically has Stockholm syndrome and is a victim! Icky. I loved Tosh and their friendship but not sure I have the desire to continue to part 2.

Willa - really unlikable, immature and annoying.

I can't get over this supposed business woman doing stupid things like wagering a family heirloom and being so naive as to think her opponent wouldn't cheat. So the premise was weak. I had no respect for Willa. She is a liar, slave buyer/their (despite setting them free), and an ass. She should have just killed the guy who took the Damon necklace. Dumb.

I give up...
Last book was an egocentric male "hero".
This was almost the reverse; a whiny egocentric heroine. the difference is that Finley at least had some backbone and personality where Kyran had nothing going for him. Sure he was sweet, but with nothing else there wasn't enough to balance the whole thing up.

I will definitely NOT finish the series. At least not if I remember how dreadful the last two installments were.

Book number four is okay

I am enjoying the series but this book so far is my least favorite one. I did not connect to the main female character Willa. She is just cavalier about everything and even her BFF Willa. I just didn’t like her. Even villains, I liked more. Her male interest Kyran was a like able character along with his pack members Nor and Sorin. This one is just okay.

Good

I loved how strong and brave the female lead and her best friend were. I loved their dialogue with each other and how they had each other's back. Willa and Khyran relationship was great as well. Loved how open they were with each other. The story was overall really good I look forward to the next book in the series.
