Audiobook...narrated by Ruby Thomas

I never heard of this story until listening to this audiobook. My god....heartbreaking!

Gemma Dowler explains why she waited 15 years to write this book - tell her family’s story —her sister Milly was 13 years old when she was brutally murdered. Milly was first taken in 2002. There are many thoughts I have about ‘the wait’ of the 15 years to tell this complete story. I have sooooo much respect for Gemma Dowler for ‘waiting’. People who have lived through ‘any’

This ripped my heart out, so unbelievably sad and absolutely enraging with how the police and press treated the Dowlers. Beautifully written by Gemma and I truly felt the spirit and life of Milly shone through. What a hole her loss has created but I'm pleased that with help the Dowlers are able to live again and remember Milly for the joy she was.

I read this a while ago but was reminded of Milly by a recent television drama here in the UK which depicted the hunt for her killer. 'My sister Milly' is written by Milly's older sister Gemma Dowler and truly this was one of the most difficult and heart breaking books I have ever read and it made me so incredibly angry; especially angry at the police whose erroneous obsession with the idea that her father was involved prevented them from properly investigating her initial disappearance allowing ...more

Despite this being over 500 pages, I read it in a day. It was just that compelling.

Anyone who remembers this case will find this book fascinating. It brings you in with the story of before, brilliantly evoked so you feel that you know something of Milly and the family she was a part of, making it even more devastating to hear what happened to her. The emotional rollercoaster the family went on becomes the reader's, with blow after blow from the police and the media as hope is lost and the terrib

Heartbreaking A must read

A courageous woman Gemma Fowler has told Milly's story with such determination and courage. I was crying all the way through with frustration that Surrey Police had caused such pain to the Dowler family and for the torment that Millys suffered at the hands of that evil bloated monster. Milly shone throughout as a beautiful sassy young lady. Gemma thank you for sharing Millys and your story with the public.

Heart wrenching

I saw these 2 lovelies in the concert they did for Hatton Operatic Society and I know their Uncle Pete.
I had to put it down a couple of times due to the tears flowing

Admittedly it took me a while to read this book, because after some chapters/after reading some parts of it I felt I had to put it down for a day or two to properly process it all.

This book is an extraordinary contradiction: beautiful, yet at many times dark, haunting and harrowing. It was heart-wrenching to read about what happened to the Dowler family during and in the years following what happened to Milly - who you come to feel close to as you read all about her, her quirks, her mischief, he

OMG! What this family was put through, mostly by the horrible British tabloids. The press treated the serial killer better than this family. How long a serial killer got away with murder in a small town on the Thames is confounding.

I've read a few of these true crime books now, but I was particularly keen to read this one as I remember the disappearance of Milly Dowler very vividly.

I was the same age as Milly when she went missing, and I'm afraid I do remember being led by the news speculation that she had run away. I remember a conversation with my mum where I said something like I can't wait til she comes back again, I wonder where she's been. Hopefully we'll get told. I thought maybe Milly had run away with a fit male

Complete and utter admiration for the author of this book and her family...

I live in Walton On Thames and have always had massive respect for the Dowler family. Like so many, I know of them through the harrowing events in their life that have been played out in public. I've been sickened by the actions of a local serial murderer, the failure of the police and legal system plus the outrageous way the press added to the family's living hell for their own gain. Having a teenage daughter attend the

What an incredible and beautifully written book and a fitting tribute to Gemma's sister Milly. I found this book incredibly hard going due to the subject matter raised which meant it took me some time to read, but I'm glad it did as it meant I really took my time in reading about the events of Milly's life. I have nothing but admiration for the Dowler family who endured so much in the many years after Milly's death. The situation would have broken many but I loved that the family stayed united t ...more

This is a heart wrenching read, but also extremely valuable. It is not just the story of an abduction and murder, but even more so, the story of a family’s emotional journey through trauma, and the steps they took to survive it all. A touching tale, but not for the faint of heart. If you are interested in the strength of the human spirit, and willing to withstand the emotional pain of a life cut short, this may be the book for you. Worth reading, but if you are the extremely sensitive sort, bett ...more

Well worth reading even though it is absolutely heartbreaking. What an ugly, disgusting, despicable monster Bellfield is. Well done Gemma, you brave girl, for sharing your story with us and what really happened to Milly; how you were so appallingly let down and hurt by those you needed and trusted. What a little ray of sunshine Milly was and how proud she would be of her lovely adoring family. Bless you all, RIP Milly

This was so heart wrenching and unbelievably emotive - not much makes me cry, but this did several times. Gemma has written a beautiful book about her sister, first painting a vivid picture of her character and then tracing every moment from her disappearance to the imprisoning of her killer and their involvement in the phone hacking scandal. Really well written and very thought provoking.

How difficult this must have been for Gemma to write.
The pain the Dowlers have felt and still feel to this day ... losing a loved one in the awful circumstances that they did you feel a sense of there pain in Gemma's writing.

I couldn't put this book down. That poor poor family. I've been sad, angry, frustrated, all the emotions I rarely get reading. Best book I've read in years. Well done Gemma, you did your sister Milly very very proud.

So here am I in South Africa, believing that crime investigations in other Countries are so slick, so sophisticated, so efficient. Scotland Yard and all. Well, this account sure is an eye opener. Thank heavens I have not experienced a missing person event. And judging from this, would never wish it on any - but a monster, like Levi. Incensed as I read about that mans privileges, advantages and rights - vs the disgusting treatment of the Dowlers. Mr Dowler, in particular seems to have endured unj ...more

What a heartbreaking read. I've read alot of crime books and books written by family members of crime victims over the years but this is the first one about Milly Dowler and I came into it without much knowledge about the case. I would have been only 12 when Milly went missing so even though I knew about the case i didn't really take alot of details in about it. This was an open and honest account of a family's horror of something that should never have happened. I found this a really compelling ...more

I remember following this story in the media it's not until you read this book you understand the reality of what went on. I read it in stages. To digest just what I had read. It was lovely to read about Milly, her love of dancing, playing the sax & fashion, her play list had some great tunes too. What happened to Millie is utterly heartbreaking, devastating, cruel the list goes on as it is beyond words it is so awful. The family have stuck together through so much.
