Ali on Ali: Why He Said What He Said When He Said It

Muhammad Ali was a champion, a poet, a prophet. Sports Illustrated called him “the greatest athlete of the twentieth century.” And yet he was even more than all of that, “a whole greater than the sum of its parts . . . bigger, brighter, more original and influential than just about anyone of his era” (Barack Obama). He got there with his fists, with his actions, and above all, with his words.
Compiled and written by his daughter Hana Ali, with sportswriter Danny Peary, Ali on Ali brings together a remarkable mix of Ali’s 70 most humorous, poignant, inspirational, political, and philosophical quotes, all with their origins. Here’s Ali’s enduring boast, “I am the greatest!”—and how it was inspired by professional wrestler Gorgeous George. The story behind one of the most memorably poetic lines of the century—“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” The heard-round-the-world defiance of “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong,” and its moving context. And the stories behind quotes ranging from outrage—“We been in jail for 400 years,” to inspiration—“I hated every minute of training, but I said ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion,’” to that infectious combination of humor and bravado—“If you even dream of beating me you better wake up and apologize.”
Included are powerful photographs throughout, from iconic fight scenes to never-before-seen Ali family snapshots; quotes about Ali, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Billy Crystal; a career timeline; and a personal introduction by Hana Ali.

Muhammad Ali was my hero, so I was really looking forward to this book compiled by his daughter Hana Ali.I was not disappointed, the book is full of quotes made by the great man and Hana supplies a little background to where and when it was used. There are many photos, some very familiar and others I saw for the very first time. I read this book in one sitting and I always knew I would enjoy it but was surprised by the waves of emotion I experienced throughout. Muhammad Ali was an exceptional boxer and very likely the greatest sportsman of all time, but he was so much more . He was at one time the most well known face on the planet, a man of faith, verse and pure genius. The book is full of his many quotes, some funny and very thought provoking that sent shivers down my spine.
A great book but reading it on my pc did not really do it justice. This book is a perfect coffee table book and in my opinion should be viewed in a large colour edition for full effect. A must read for anyone like me who was an hardened fan but also eye opening and inspirational for everyone else. There was only one Muhammad Ali, the greatest.

I like to thank Netgalley and Workman Publishing Company giving me a opportunity for reading this great book of Muhammad Ali Quotes.

Muhammad Ali is one of my favourite sports person. My father used to say about Ali’s boxing talent to me. Muhammad Ali paid a visit to India in January 1980, and he stayed in Chennai and did an exhibition bout in old Nehru Stadium arranged by Tamil Nadu Amateur Boxing Association and a private sponsor Apeejay group. He did a fight with former heavy weight champion Jimmy Ellis. The function was presided by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MGR, who is a sport enthusiast. (For images and news of Ali's Chennai visit click the link given below the review)

I liked the book so much and I strongly recommend every Muhammad Ali fans should have. And I came to know that Ali also wrote some poem. The book has beautiful photos of Ali in the ring and some with his family & friends.

The book is full of quotes of Ali. The writer has given brief description for each quote when it was said and for whom. Most of his quotes are hilarious some are thought provoking. My most liked quotes of Ali is given below.

1. If you even dream of beating me you'd better wake up and apologize.
2. I understand you have a queen of England but you don't have a king.
3. I ain't Superman. If the fans think I can do everything I say I can do then they're crazier than I am.
4. The man who will whup me will be fast strong, and hasn't been born yet.
5. I hated every minute of training. But I said, Don't Quit. Suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion.
6. I've seen George Foreman shadow boxing and the shadow won.

Poem (March 1963)
Marcellus vanquished Carthage
Cassius laid Julius Caesar low.
And Clay will flatten Dough Jones
With a mighty, muscled blow.

And my most favourite one is the 7th quote.

7. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

It is possible to say so much more and say it so much better by using less words. This one makes me think of Streisand's beautiful book In The Camera Eye.

The author (Ali's 3rd youngest daughter), Hana Yasmeen Ali, does a marvelous job of collecting her father's most memorable quotes and letting the reader know when and where he said it and why.

Each page has a high gloss finish, a picture on one side with a quote on the other. The reading is wonderfully easy, making for quick reading. Some of the quotes will come to mind to many of the readers as some will give the reader a new insight into Muhammad Ali.

I would be remiss to not mention the quality of the photos throughout the book as well as obvious sentimentality in the choice of the pictures.

Beautifully done this would be a welcome addition to the library of any reader, sports fan or not.

A wonderful book and all of the quotes inside of the book I remember Ali saying at one time or another. His famous “Float like a butterfly sting like a bee. Rumble young man rumble”. Before the Sonny Liston fight in 1964, but we only remember the first part. “I ‘m the king of the world!” After defeating Sonny Liston. In 1966 “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Vietcong”. Why he refused to serve in the Army. There are more quotes in this book but for me these were the ones that stood out. I remembered them growing up in the sixties and watching him box. This book is filled with more and with pictures some never seen before and a few stories. Overall a good book. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. "Muhammed Ali's daughter Hana Ali, with sportswriter Danny Peary, compiles and writes a mix of Ali's 70 funnies, philosophical, inspirational, poignant, and political quotes. The quotes are written along with their origins and accompanying photographs.

My top three thoughts on 'Ali on Ali':
1. Muhammed Ali was a name I had become familiar with at a very early age. Although I never watched or understood his fights, his controversial life was something I knew at a surface level about through the news and conversations about him - the resistance he had to face when he changed his religion, how much he spoke up for his race and then for human rights, his firm stance on his beliefs, all the gossip around his multiple marriages, and his deep trust in his faith. I recently read another book by Hana Ali, 'At Home with Muhammed Ali' which gave wonderful insights into who Muhammed Ali was like at home. She spoke about his life and what kind of a man he chose to be. 'Ali on Ali' shows Hana Ali's continued love and respect for her father in every photograph, every quote and every page of this book.
2. I kept taking screenshot after screenshot of pages hoping to share the strongest quotes. By the time I was done with the book, I had close to 90 screenshots. The quotes by him that I enjoyed the most are about goodness and humanity. I also love all the wonderful and moving things all the celebrities said about him.
3. This is a very short read (only 128 pages!) and I finished it within an hour. I really wish there were more pages in the book because almost all of them are thought-provoking and timely. The family photos are lovely and the quotes selected are powerful. I suggest not to read this as an e-book like I did because it didn't do justice to the book and took away from my overall reading experience. I'm definitely going to re-visit this one again in a (preferably) hardcopy format.

“Ali on Ali: Why He Said What He Said When He Said It” is a captivating compilation by Hana Yasmeen Ali, the daughter of the iconic Muhammad Ali, alongside Danny Peary. This book stands out through its unique presentation, featuring glossy photographs of the legendary boxer paired with some of his most memorable quotes. Each page offers a visual feast, as the photographs enhance the sentiments conveyed in the text, creating an engaging reading experience.

Hana Yasmeen Ali presents the quotes not just as words but as reflections of her father’s bold personality and the powerful messages he sought to communicate throughout his life. The context provided for each quote adds depth and understanding, allowing readers to grasp the significance behind his words. The approach taken in this book mirrors the philosophy of using fewer words for greater impact, akin to the succinct yet powerful expression often seen in other works focused on impactful figures.

Ali On Ali is a compilation of the most well-known of Mohammed Ali's quotes as well as the context and philosophy behind them.

WHO WOULD ENJOY READING IT?
Fans of the boxer would love the pictures, the quotes, the historical references, and relive some of "The Greatest"'s victories over powerful rivals.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT
Mohammed Ali's daughter is one of the authors of this book - this lends a bit of authenticity to the experiences and perspectives recorded. From her view, we are able to see how Mohammed Ali saw his rivals, what boxing meant to him, as well as his personal politics.
