Howl Like a Wolf!: Learn to Think, Move, and Act Like 15 Amazing Animals

Rate this book
From birds to dogs to horses, kids love to watch, imitate, learn about, and pretend to be animals. But there’s a lot more to being a dog than just panting and walking on all fours. This book combines natural history with creative play activities to encourage children to think like an animal. For each featured animal, children learn key facts such as what it eats; where it lives; who else lives with it; and how it interacts with other animals. Creative prompts then teach kids how to mimic more subtle aspects of behavior that are central to the animal’s life and survival.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I definitely didn't expect what I got! I thought this would be a cute, short picture book with information and games. Instead it is even better! As it is more like a chapter book. Lots of information, games, fun facts, and gorgeous illustrations.

We got 16 animals (the last one being quite a surprise). We start with wolves, and then meet all sorts of other animals from all over the world. Each chapter begins with information about the animal, what they do, where they live, about pups, and eggs, and more. After the information it is the reader's turn to be that animal! Mostly it is games, but there is also some more information on the animals (or others who also do the same kind of thing as the selected animal). The games vary from howling like a wolf, making elephant ears, playing tricks,

I loved the introductions of the animals. Like an animal really introduces themselves to the reader, as if we are sitting next to them, or visiting them for a cup of tea (or whatever else the animals would like to drink). It just made it more original, and more personal.

I would like to have seen more consistency. Some animals only get one page of introduction and information while others get 3. Same for the games. Some animals get quite a few, and others just one or two.

I did like that the author(s) asked questions. For instance when we are being told about decorator crabs, they ask: "When you play dress-up, what do you like to wear?"

I just adored the illustrations! Colourful, fun, detailed. And not just the bigger illustrations, but also the little illustrations that are found all over the pages. Such a delight. At times I took a bit longer with a page just to enjoy the illustration. :)

I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

This book was so much more than I was expecting. This book could be used with children in so many ways. It can teach them about animals and their particular traits, be used in a drama lesson or in physical education and active play. This is a great book to introduce children to the natural world in a fun and interactive way. They can howl like a wolf, leap like a frog, use their tongue to see how frogs capture prey, see like a bat, and even use a garden house to pretend they have an elephant trunk to squirt water and so on. There were so many fun activities that could be used, I can see this book being a resource over and over. Parents and their children could also have a lot of fun with some of the activities listed. Just be prepared for kids to become silly, but that is all part of the fun. The facts in the book will also help children learn about why the animals have particular traits or skills and get them thinking about other animals and maybe even a bit about adaptations. A great book for public, school, classroom and home libraries. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Howl Like a Wolf! Learn to Think, Move, and Act Like 15 Amazing Animals by Kathleen Yale, illustrated by Kaley McKean. PICTURE BOOK/NON-FICTION. Storey Publishing, 2018. $19. 9781612129051

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) – ESSENTIAL.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

There are fifteen sections in this brightly illustrated book with titles like, Howl Like a Wolf and Dance Like a Honeybee. In each section there is a first person description of that animal and several additional pages of facts and then activities that directly relate to the behaviors of that animal. These activities include things like foraging at a farmers market (like a deer) and carrying a ball on the top of your feet (like a penguin).

This book is a great addition to a classroom teacher’s toolbox. It is informational, engaging, and includes lots of activities that could be done in a classroom setting. Some activities are more silly than others and some would be difficult in a school setting, but enough could be used or adapted that this would work well in grades K-3.

Kids love to play at being things other than themselves, so this is a great book to introduce them to the natural world, and make games out of it. Yes, the book suggests that they can howl like a wolf, or jump like a frog, or do a dance like a bee.

And in tell them all these things, with bright, colorful pictures, they can pick up information about those animals, and why they do what they do.

Delightful. I a little old to go howling like a wolf, or squeaking like a bat, to find my food, or playing with a garden hose to show how an elephants nose works, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate teaching kids fun, long words like nocturnal and echolocation, while they learn about how bats see by sound.

Highly recommend this for classrooms and libraries. Just be prepared for kids getting all silly trying some of the games out.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This is a highly informative book featuring a whole array of different animals and their individual traits and skills. It prompts the young person to think about why that animal has that trait, such as 'why do wolves howl?' followed by lots of facts, and some ideas for creative play to 'think' like that animal. This is an all-round great fun book which encourages creativity and play, whilst imparting lots of interesting facts and knowledge.

WHAT BIG TEETH YOU HAVE!
A wolf's teeth are sharp, big, and heavy. They look a lot like your pet dog's teeth, but their jaws are much stronger. In fact, the force of their bite is strong enough to break bones.

We start this amazing story with the Gray Wolf and I already love it! The animal facts are well written both informational and kid friendly. It helps who ever is reading them think of them in real life. It also has the kids practice being the animal (acting like it), how cool is that?!?!? The rest of this wonderful book continues like this. I want this book!!! I need this book for my classroom library.

1. Grey Wolf
2. Emperor Penguin
3. African Elephant
Did you know elephants are one of only a few animals who can recognize their own reflections in a mirror? I had no idea!!
4. Little Brown Bat
5. Giant Pacific Octopus
One of the subheadings in this part of the book is Suckers! another is Escape Artists.
6. Diamondback Rattlesnake
7. Great Bowerbird
8. North American Beaver
9. Leopard
10. Humpback Whale
11. Western Honeybee
12. Northern Raven
13. Striped Skunk
14. Columbia Spotted Frog
15. White-Tailed Deer

Extra animal, Tardigrade. Which looks like something out a horror film. A microorganism, which needs a special microscope or magnifying glass to see...thankfully because, ewwww.

I love this book so much and the illustrations are beautiful. What a great book!

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.
Howl Like a Wolf is aimed at young readers and is packed with information and play-alongs for more than 15 different animals. Each chapter introduces an animal, explains some of their behaviors and characteristics and then invites the reader along on activities to learn about why the animals do what they do.

I loved the art, it's colorful and vibrant. The text is intelligent and not condescending. The chapters include the proper Latin names for the animals they're describing. Increasing awareness and empathy for the wild animals around us, many of whom are critically threatened is so vital to our future and the future of life on our planet. The interactive activities included in the book are a fun way to get youngsters moving and understanding a little more about the animals who share our planet.

Very well written, beautifully illustrated. Super bonus points for including tardigrades as one of the animals in the book. I'm in love!

Four stars!

Thought this book was fantastic and am ordering for all my favorite families with children between the ages of birth and 12! The author, Kathleen Yale, writes in a very down to earth and accessible tone that moves you along nicely, helping you discover facts and fun about 15 different animals, birds and reptiles and inspiring readers to explore and imitate their habits and worlds.

I must say the illustrations by Kaley McKean are enchanting. The colors and forms are magnificent and really pique the imagination. Their vibrancy and detail flow effortlessly and make you want to keep turning the pages. The pictures are charming without being cutesy--a real accomplishment.

This book is a real work of art, and both author and illustrator did a fine job!

Exceptional piece of literature and art. The author knows her topic and brilliantly conveys it to her audience of 5 to 8 year olds. The illustrator knows her colors and how to "speak" to children. She depicts animals in such glorious shades and hues that they are terrifying but accessible and beautiful but purposeful.
Unlike many children's books, this one screams that children are sentient beings who are best engaged through a cogent description of animals with accompanying suggestions for how to experience being one. The illustrations take the adult and child on a magical ride that explores fantasy and facts of animal life.

A book full of wonderful illustrations and great, short information on a variety of animals. It encourages children to foster their imagination and, in doing so, encourages empathy for their wild brethren. I feel an educator or adult could make more use out of this for classes or group activities, and for some such as the wolf activities, highly encourage a child NOT do them without supervision (red flag on baring teeth at the family dog!). Still, it's worth picking for a read. Bonus is including one of my favorite animals: the bowerbird!

Howl, dance, sing, hop! This book definitely will motivate a child to move around and explore. The descriptions and information on all the different animals is amazing. I think the animals chosen and the details are ideal for young readers. The illustrations reminded me of Gustaf Tenggren’s illustrations for Little Golden Books. They were brightly colored and helped explain the facts. I think this book would be great to read out loud, especially in a group setting.

I expected a picture book with some facts about the animals, but you get much more than that. A fun chapter book that encourages learning and physical activity at the same time. You learn some interesting facts about animals and then children are encouraged to act like the animal, using all the new facts they have learned. The last animal in the book was a surprise, and was quite informative.

As a family fitness blogger, I was really excited to review this book. I'm always looking for fun and creative ways to incorporate movement into our daily routine. This book is engaging and provides a lot of facts about each animal.

The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous! I would purchase based on the cover art alone. This book is a must for any family with small children.

Good information about animals and then activities for acting like the animals. Some good ideas for integrating dance and/or drama I thought the Bowerbird would be a good art activity.

Howl Like a Wolf: Why Animals Do What They Do – and How You Can Do It, Too! is a children's non fiction book written by Kathleen Yale and illustrated by Kaley McKean. It is currently scheduled for release on March 6 2018. Kids generally love to watch, imitate, learn about, and pretend to be animals.

Howl Like a Wolf: Why Animals Do What They Do – and How You Can Do It, Too! is a fun and fascinating read, offering facts and activities that invite young readers (and their class or family) to not just learn about the animals but to act and think like them as well. Animals included are the wolf, penguin, elephant, bat, octopus, rattlesnake, bowerbird, beaver, leopard, humpback whale, honeybee, raven, skunk, frog, deer, and tardigrade. The information and activities are easy to understand and fully engaging. I found that the book offered a good deal of information I already knew, but I think young readers will find new information here. I thought the illustrations were well paired with the information. The images were charming and accurate in turn, offering a visual representation of the facts along some inspiration for the activities and further exploration of the topic. I think this would be a great addition to classroom and home libraries, particularly those with animal or nature lovers.

I actually didn't mean to get this book for review but I entered a giveaway and received a link to this book. So I read it to my 4-year-old sister. She loved it she loved learning about the animals and doing the activities. I really liked that it was a wide variety of animals instead of the common animals you find in kid books. The last one was for sure not expected but it was really interesting to learn about. My favorite part of the book, however, was the artwork. I found it to be really beautiful and the colors were very vivid. My sister enjoyed the book so much that I plan to buy a physical copy for her bookshelf

This was an interesting and informative children's book about animals. I loved how the illustrations were very appropriate for children while the information about each animal was interesting. My three year old loved the craft ideas and imitating the animal actions and sounds. This is one I would enjoying having in print format.

Howl Like a Wolf introduces young readers to different creatures found around the world. Each creature introduces itself and shares facts with readers using the first person. Delightful illustrations accompany each page. Then, there are activities that children can do that relate to the creture that they just learned about. I loved that the activities were simple, cost effective, and gave suggestions for group and individual play. They also encourage going outside--always a bonus! I really appreciate that many animals featured in the book are those many may think of as "gross" (bats), scary (rattlesnakes), or pests (skunks). This is a nice step towards chaning mindsets about these animals.

Kids will learn a whole lot more than just how to howl in Howl like a Wolf!. From sliding like a penguin to transforming like a frog, kids will learn all about a variety of animals and how to realistically pretend to be them. The book is informative and encourages kids to get up, get moving, and try out these animal characteristics for themselves. A great book for imaginative play!
