My Forbidden Duchess by Miriam Minger is the third book of her Man of my Dreams series. In this book, we are introduced to our two protagonists, Marguerite Easton and Walter Burke, through the literary device of backstory. We learn that a traumatic event, the abduction of the three Easton daughters, and their rescue resulted in a chance meeting between Marguerite and Walter that leaves a lasting impact on them.
This novel possesses many qualities of a Regency Romance that attract many fans of this genre. I was impressed with Ms. Minger’s two-prong plot arcs-romance arc and a suspense arc. Her plot line is fast paced through her masterful intertwining of these two complementary arcs. I enjoyed how she used themes of greed and jealousy to unite to antagonists in their quest for revenge. Will they be successful?
Ms. Minger’s use of literary devices such as dialog and descriptive language were well done. Her dialog was realistic and purposeful. Likewise, her use of descriptive language also helped to make this story realistic. I found myself immersed in the scene of the carriage ride to and from Gretna Green, a haven for young couples to escape to and marry without parental consent. It felt as though we were in the carriage with this young couple as they sped through the night to reach their destination. Will Marguerite and Walter make it? What dangers will they face? To find out you must read this riveting tale.
