This review was originally posted on [Between My Lines]There was a lot of things I loved about this book but if I have to sum it up in just a few works, I'd say it's smart, diverse and fast-paced.  And when it comes to YA, these are three great elements to see in a book.

My thoughts on If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn:
As you see from the synopsis, this book deals with the sadly always relevant topic of terrorism and the plight of people having to flee their homelands.  I really thought this book

I really enjoyed If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn. It was a fast-paced, exciting and tense thriller and I was hooked into the characters and the danger throughout.

If You Were Me is told from a dual-perspective. There's Aliya, an Afghan girl, who has fled Afghanistan with her mother and brother after they are all put on the Taliban list. The opening scene is of Aliya and her family narrowly escaping and driving off with people hot on their heels. It was dramatic and emotional and I thought it was a

Aliya's family has been in Britain for only a few weeks after their escape from Afghanistan when her brother is accused of being a terrorist. The police, the media, his employer... everyone believes him to be guilty, only Aliya is convinced that he is not. So she tries to find out what really happened on her own, asking Dan, the plumber's son she just met the day before, for help after he has already aided her once. What she doesn't know: Dan has his own reasons for looking into the matter, beca ...more

Consiguen huir y, posteriormente, comienza

I didn’t want to put this book down from the moment I began reading chapter one. Sadly I started If You Were Me at lunchtime so I had to go back to work but I raced home and didn’t move from my sofa all night.

The story is narrated in alternating chapters by Aliya and Dan, they each have clear and distinct voices so while it’s nice that the publisher’s picked different fonts to make it obvious the narrator had changed I don’t think it was necessary.

I was pretty taken by Aliya from the start; she

Really immersive story that was hard to put down. Aliya's perspective is so fresh and frightening that you really route for her right from the start.

The two central teenage characters are thrown together has they desperately try to help the people they love. Aliya's narration allows the reader to experience her sorrow and despair as the sister of an accused terrorist bomber. We see the prejudice and outrage and wish someone would help her. She reaches out to Dan but is suspicious at the lengths

This was a fast-paced thriller which captured my attention immediately. Told in the alternate voices of Aliya, an Afghan refugee whose brother is accused of terrorism, and Dan, who's father may be involved in drug smuggling, and linked to Aliya's brother's fate. Together they face criminals, corruption and danger as they try to find out the truth. As well as the crime/thriller angle the reader gains insight into the life of Afghan refugees facing poverty, loneliness and prejudice while strugglin ...more
I didn't engage with this story or its characters at all, apart from right at the beginning. The extent of the mystery seemed to be rather implausible, and I struggled to really get to grips with Dan as a character or his life. I also absolutely hated the way Aliya referred to Dan as "the boy" throughout, rather than this name - it jarred every time I read it, and probably was one of the reasons why Dan made no impression on me as a character.

I assume a sequel is planned, though I can't see why

This book was fairly out my comfort zone - I can't think of the last time I read a contemporary thriller! I did enjoy this story more than I thought I would though and I particularly liked the dual, alternating perspectives that were interesting for presenting two different cultural viewpoints and helped to keep the narrative gripping.

El libro me ha impresionado. La trama es genial. Te mantiene constantemente enganchada a él y te impide soltarlo.

This is a solid YA thriller - a suspenseful, easy read with likeable characters. A young Afghani refugee in the United States is suspected of committing a bombing, and his younger sister sets out to clear his name. I would have liked to see a bit more political commentary, but the author chooses to be more subtle in the way the book handles prejudice. For the most part, issues of identity/racism take a backseat to the plot. Overall, though, I enjoyed the book (and I think it would make a fantast ...more

Ok, let’s play a game. You walk into a shop/come library/come book-cavern-extraordinaire, and you pick up a book. This book, it has a sumptuous velvety cover, with burnished bronze foiling and is called If You Were Me, what do you think it’s about? I’ll give you a moment to compile your answers. Decided? Got it nailed? Well, this is why I’m here, to tell you you are wrong.

Excellent Read!

Very good book, good read. Good for all ages particularly teenagers. Some parts are a little bit confusing so it's best to take the book slow and make sure you've got all the information on board.
