Gabriel José de la Concordia Garcí­a Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. Garcí­a Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo" in his native country, was considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York. He wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best-known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, which uses magical elements and events in order to explain real experiences. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo, and most of them express the theme of solitude.

Having previously written shorter fiction and screenplays, García Márquez sequestered himself away in his Mexico City home for an extended period of time to complete his novel Cien años de soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The author drew international acclaim for the work, which ultimately sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. García Márquez is credited with helping introduce an array of readers to magical realism, a genre that combines more conventional storytelling forms with vivid, layers of fantasy.

Another one of his novels, El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), or Love in the Time of Cholera, drew a large global audience as well. The work was partially based on his parents' courtship and was adapted into a 2007 film starring Javier Bardem. García Márquez wrote seven novels during his life, with additional titles that include El general en su laberinto (1989), or The General in His Labyrinth, and Del amor y otros demonios (1994), or Of Love and Other Demons.

- تروي هذه القصة حياة فتاة جميلة تعتقد ان جمالها عبئاً عليها بسبب مراقبة الناس، وبذلك تكون هذه الهبة (الجمال) قصاص لها في النهار وتتحول الى حشرات صغيرة ليلاً(بشكل نفسي) تمنعها من النوم! وهذا القصاص (الجمال) انتقل لها من جداتها. تحاول الفتاة ان تنام فتموت او تنتقل الى ما يتعدى الواقع المادي وحينما تحاول العودة يتضح لها ان الوقت قد مرّ، ثلاثة آلاف سنة! وبهذا يكون المعنى الظاهري للقصة.

تاويلها: تحتمل هذه القصة عدة تاويلات، ومن الوارد جداً ان ماركيز اراد التكلم عن فاتورة الجمال الذي تدفعه الفتاة، عن الرغبة المحرمة (رمزية شجرة وحبة البرتقال)، عقيدة التناسخ وغيرها...

A beautiful story about psychology of a woman about to commit suicide. Allusions to Eve and Helen of Troy. I should like to believe the myth that there is a beautiful woman's spirit in every cat. Will explain their royal ways.

أول قصة واقعية سحرية أقراها لماركيز.
ممتعة بس مش قوي.
مش عارف هو عايز يوصل لفين.
قصة عجائبية عن سيدة آثرت أن تترك جمالها الذي لطالما ابتلاها بنظرات الرجال المتفحصة
و يعرض علينا الكاتب تأملات السيدة في لعنة جمال عائلتها حيث انهن لديهن نمل من نوع غريب تحت بشرتهم يعمل دائمًا علي الحفاظ علي جمالهم
و تتأمل السيدة شجرة البرتقال التي دفن تحتها السنة الماضية فتي في الخامسة من عمره و هي تخشي ان ياتيها في اي وقت و ينام بجانبها او يطلبها منها اللعب معه كما اعتاد.
و هي تتخيل هذا الطفل في حياة تحت الأرض و تتخيله تحلل و أصبح في المحصول الجديد من البرتقال
و من ثم تتحول السيدة إلي هالة تسكن في كل مكان من البيت و هي تريد أن تأكل برتقاله و لكن في نفس الوقت تشعر بالإشمئزاز فالبرتقاله فيها الطفل الصغير
و لكن رغبتها أشد منها فتبدأ في التفكير كيف ستأكل برتقاله في حالتها الجديدة ثم تأتيها الفكرة انها تستطيع أن تدخل جسد أي شخص و لكن لا يوجد أشخاص في المنزل ثم تفكر في قطتها و تراودها العديد من التساؤلات هل تدخل بجسد قطتها فعلًا ام لا هل تسيطر رغباتها علي رغبات قطتها ام العكس هو ما سيحدث
و بعد أن تقرر أخيرًا ان تحتل جسد القطة لا تجدها في أي مكان بل تجد الزرنيخ في كل مكان من البيت حتي الشجرة اختفت و اصبح في مكانها الزرنيخ و تكتشف أنه مضي علي تفكيرها في أكل البرتقاله 3000 سنة
هل يبدوا الريفيو لكم كأنما لرجل يهذي ؟
هذه هي الواقعية السحرية يا أعزائي.
حرروا عقولكم و توقعوا أي شئ.
فعندما يندمج الخيال مع الواقعية.
يتولد عالم سحري لا حدود له

Poetically written, I’m drowning in imagery here.

This quote sums up Eva, the main character:
“Besides, she would be a strange being, a cat with the intelligence of a beautiful woman. She would be the center of all attention. . . . It was then, for the first time, that she understood that above all her virtues what was in command was the vanity of a metaphysical woman.”

Eva is essentially a restless spirit, who for 3 thousand years has been trapped inside her house with her thoughts, insomnia and guilt.
A boy from an orange tree is constantly on her mind - where her guilt lies. My guess/interpretstion is that it was because of Eva’s beauty and vanity that she reels the boy from the orange tree in… they were once lovers.
The story ends and we find out the boy was poisoned by aresenic. There was arsenic throughout their house. Could Eva have poisoned him? It’s not clear to me yet, I need to rethink the story.

As much as I love the way Gabriel writes, I much preferred the man with enormous wings. The themes and imagery of that story were more appealing. This story was well written but didn’t intrigue me on the same level.

I've enjoyed some of his short stories, can't say this is one of them.

I never knew Gabriel ever wrote something like this. It is beyond beautiful and detailed. If anyone has any trouble with explaining what depression is, then recommend them this book. It has a way of simplicity that I could never reach in trying to portray a feeling, a state of mind, or image.

I couldn't keep my eyes of it until I finished it.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked the idea but couldn't click with the prose. Marquez is a good writer, but compared to his other works, getting through this one was tiresome, with little to no enjoyment.

From what I see, it's a story of a malady driving one insane. Beauty as a catalyst of inner destruction, opposed to the stereotypical portrayal of a desired quality. Crazed escapism leading to the thoughts of insects living in the bloodstream (Higurashi fan, am I right?). A possible suicide attempt due to the inability to accept the death of a child. I'm not sure about the title. Perhaps Eva in the title is a generalized image of a woman since the protagonist didn't end up finding a cat. Or it is something Bible related, like it so often happens.

In any case, this one is a miss for me. Non-recommend. 2.5

هل جمال المرأة عبء عليها؟ هل المرأة الجميلة تعاني من رغبات البشر المكبوتة ؟ تضطر المرأة الجميلة تحمل الصعاب من نظرات الرجال وشعورها برغباتهم الحيوانية تجاهها تتحمل ضغط الناس عليها شابة جميلة لاتستطيع النوم من أرق وخوف يدمر حياتها وشجرة برتقال محرمة في الفناء مدفون تحتها صبي ولكنه حي يريد أن يخرج ويذهب إليها تقرر أن تنام فتموت وتختفي عن الواقع المادي . عندما أقرأ لماركيز أجد كل ماهو مستحيل ممكن يجعلك تصدق أي شيئ في كتابات ماركيز كل شيئ حي علي الورق أشم رائحة الأشجار وأري الفناء ماثل أمامي والشخصيات أراها والمشاعر المتداخلة يستطيع ماركيز أن ينسج من كل شيئ حياة كاملة حتي لو أراد أن يتكلم عن كرسي سيعطي لك حياة كاملة عنه ويجعله حي أمامك القصة تحمل تساؤلات عدة وفلسفات متتعدة مزيج رائع جدا جدا

This is a curiously dark, creepy, gorgeous story.

The more I read Marquez's short stories, the more I wonder how he doesn't have a Poe-like reputation for the macabre. This and The Most Handsome Drowned Man in the World share a down-to-earth tangibility with death and beauty that I really enjoy.

إمرأة مدمرة من زوال جمالها بفعل مرور الزمن .. تتخيل حشرات جاءتها من الماضي البعيد محمولة في "جينات" دم الأسلاف لتقضي على نضارتها في حالة نفسية جعلتها تتمنى نفسها دميمة وهي حالة كانت ستجنبها الإحساس بفجيعة الفقدان وزوال البهاء .. حدث أوصلها لأعلى درجات الاكتئاب حيث أضحت تتمنى الموت وما كان يقلل من روعها هو أن فكرة دورة الحياة الطبيعية تقتضي ذلك وتحكم الجميع .. لتنتهي إلى أن جمال الروح أبقى من جمال الجسد .. قناعة حملتها على تخيل نفسها كائناً روحياً متصورة أن شخصاً ما دفعها نحو الفراغ لتصير ذاتاً مجردة وغير محسوسة وتقضي ما تبقى لها من العمر في عالم الأرواح
