I love thriller and when there's romance in it as well, that is just like bowls of Tom Yam - absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately, my thriller slump continues with this. A promising storyline, a pathologist and a detective combo- Wow, a lesbian version of Bones. I don't have to worry about insta love as they've been friends for 3 years, they're likeable, quite efficient in their professions and secretly in love with one another, Perfect right?

After their love confession, thriller takes a break only

2.5 rounded to 3 stars. This is a first novel and it kind of shows. It honestly felt like I was reading mediocre Rizzoli and Isles fanfiction. (I'm not knocking fanfic. I like it. Truth is, I write it too, but I don't publish it as mainstream.) I liked the characters and the story was interesting, but it felt rushed and there was way more telling than showing. Overall, just an okay read, but there was enough potential I might try one of Michelle Arnold's future books just to see the progression ...more

After a few very sweet romances, I was in the mood for something grittier. This is my first book by this author, and I’m looking forward to the next one, especially as this is the start of a series. It's also my first listening to a mystery / thriller on audiobook so I was a little wary, wondering how I'd react to the scary parts. I did ok and liked the narration, I felt the narrator did a great job at voicing the characters.

We meet Amy and Lira when, after three years of friendship and believi

If you enjoy detective stories, lesbian romance and a serial read then this is a book for you! The author leads you through a tale of terror right from the off and keeps you on the edge of your seat as one by one the characters are drawn into a world that nobody ever wants to endure. I am already looking forward to the sequel!

I received a free paperback copy of this book in exchange for an honest view.

I enjoyed this first book in what is a most promising series. With a Rizzoli and Isles feel to the content this was a fantastically developed mystery with an amazing plot, that as a reader has you guessing away at the direction only to find what you thought isn’t quite what happens.

Amy and Lira’s characters are unique and bounce off of one another fantastically as their relationship develops and they overcome some awf
3.5 stars.

The first few chapters had me hooked and I was sure I was reading a 5 star book, then everything just kind of hit fast forward. It felt like I read a duology tightly condensed into one, very fast paced book with big time jumps every few chapters that had me flicking back a few pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

The characters are great, believable and layered. The subject matter is most certainly disturbing and this book comes with a heavy trigger warning.

The writing is good

I love strong female characters and the storyline was exciting and intriguing. I really enjoyed it and now number two is waiting for me.

A seriously good book.

Authors do not usually allow their main characters to be normal. This one does. I found this gem of a book by accident. One of a very select few that the average reader can relate to. The opening few pages are truly horrifying. And then we get to the normal part. Two characters get caught up in a horrific ordeal. The kidnapping and torture of one torments the other. Over the course of two days they each experience a different kind of hell. One vows revenge and gets it. She

Out of the Shadows

I haven't read this author before but came across her when searching KU for crime stories. I'm so glad I gave it a chance, it was really well written and I couldn't put it down! I loved the characters and can't wait to read the next book. And really, you can't go wrong with someone who is also a Criminal Minds fan!

Loved it.

I really enjoyed Out of the Shadows. It’s great seeing the relationship between Amy and Lira develop. But if violence against women upsets you, then you might need to skip this one.

Good book

This was a good mystery as well as a good romance book. It was a emotional read at times but very worth it.

Found by accident but so glad i did.

From page one the story takes off and has you hooked.
Its a fast pace story, easy to follow. Very likeable characters and some you will hate. This book made me an emotional mess. I felt Amy's stress and Lira's pain , I cried with them and i felt the fear down to my bones when the plot took a twist I didn't see coming until it was to late. I couldn't put it down. I finished this book in lest than a day. Its that well written.
This series is a must own. Hope yo

I recommend this book.

A new series for me and I like it. Amy is a homicide detective and her best friend, Lira, is a forensic pathologist. They work together and over time begin to have feelings for one another - a new experience for both of them. Women are being kidnapped, held for months, drugged, repeatedly raped, then murdered. Amy and her police partner are investigating the case, until disaster strikes, leaving Amy to rethink her life. Well written and engaging - I can recommend this book.

Loved this book, fell in love with the complexities of the characters and found myself cheering for them and then holding my breath hoping that ..........well if I tell you that then there will be no point in you reading the book, and I DO suggest you read it!!!

I'm sincerely hoping this book will be followed by a second in the series very soon!

Separately I loved Dr Lira's character; her quirks, as well as her vulnerability. Detective Amy I liked for her strength of character that hidden emotions

I was expecting more in the way of an in depth investigation, with twists and turns like any good crime thriller. However, I found this was lacking in anything other than a lot of dialogue. It was mostly a romantic book, which read more like a script or screenplay.

Not what I expected

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

A strong book, emotional, at times horrific, but always believable. A normal reaction to what any normal person would feel in the same situation. A very strong ending bu

Amy and Lira are 3-year best friends & recognize the love they have for each other. So begins a love affair in the midst of a serial killing spree. The editing & formatting was difficult to muster through but I had to read the book.
Crisp dialogue and thoughtful writing about falling in love with a woman when you're a woman and never thought you'd love a woman! The best part? Reading about Amy's foray into a bookstore to learn about lesbian sex and leaving with a copy of every book on the subject

I liked the characters and storyline, but I had a difficult time following who was speaking from time to time, and that occurred throughout the book. There was often no separation between characters sentences. I’m not sure what may have happened, but the formatting was such that I could not often tell where a new paragraph was supposed to be. Hopefully the next book in the series will have solved those problems, I’m going to give it a go.

Fiction rarely holds my attention for long, but I had a hard time putting this book down! I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series. I actually bought the other two books when I was about halfway through Out of the Shadows because I knew I was going to want to read them too!

Romance, not really crime fiction

A fun, quick summer-read romance, light on anything else and in serious need of proofreading. The writing was fine, not amazing. But I enjoyed it all the way through, and I needed a break when I read it - so it was fine.

The book had an interesting concept... this was more a suspense/drama/crime novel that had a bit of romance blended in. It was a good mix but I felt like the crime story aspects of the novel were more fleshed out. I will admit I had a hard time getting through the book because of the details of the crimes in it. without spoilers, there are brutal rape scenes described in the book... more about the aftermath and such... just not what I want to read about. I feel like the love story between Lira a ...more

First of all: "This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review."

This is not the best written thriller I've ever read. Nor is it entirely plausible. But I found it to be quite charming, and really enjoyed it.

The two female protagonists are both very likable and easy to relate to. I enjoyed the fact that they both were genuinely nice people. Too many thrillers and authors of thrillers seem to think that at least one main character needs to be a complete jerk.

3.5⭐️ I wanted to like this series so badly. I couldn’t get Rizzoli and Isles out of my head. I seriously “shipped” them and this was an attractive premise to me. No spoilers but as the daughter and also mother in law of cops the police procedural aspects were disappointing.

My review of this book is probably clouded by the fact I didn't like the narrator, who didn't make the voices sufficiently distinct for me to know who was talking. The delivery was flat and emotionless and didn't add to the experience. A credible first book that deserved a better narrator.

I grew up in Illinois, two blocks from my local library. I read pretty much whatever I could get my hands on, and when the story I wanted wasn't there, I made it up.
