This book seems oddly detached, like an extended Wiki entry. I don't feel like I really know anything personal about Helen Morgan after reading it. The author spends a chapter on "Show Boat" and a chapter on Tex Guinan and Prohibition, which are both interesting, but it feels like filler. I also didn't care for his both precious and pretentious writing style.

Bad writing that reeks of sexism. The author was friends with one of Morgan’s lovers (George Blackwood) and the book basically retells his story—including what he thought of Morgan’s skills in bed—and then only gives a few paragraphs each to the men Morgan married. The author seems more interested in showing off his theatre knowledge than telling the story of Morgan. The only good part was the description of the time Blackwood and Morgan raised a baby lion together. Too bad this is the only bio of a super interesting woman. If you’re interested in her life, go watch the Playhouse 90 special on her that’s on YouTube instead.

Pretentious and hyperbolic, written by a fan more than a researcher.
